    Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦!
    I first saw 8mm in 2003 when I turned 18. Rented the then ‘old’ VHS in the 10 for $10 discount shelves at our local movie store. I watched it alone in my dark basement on a 14” TV. That movie stuck with me for weeks after that. Even a couple weeks I was telling the wife we should watch it. I think everything worked in the way that movie was made. The characters, the sets, the tone. As a kid growing up in the early stages of the internet and pornography finding its way on there (Pam Andersen and Tommy Lee sex tape), this film gave a dark, seedy underbelly to that sort of ‘goings on’.

      Morning Jeremy. 8mm made me realize that snuff movies were real and not the urban myth they were made out to be. A disturbing but great film that has lost none of its power since I first saw it in the cinema. John.

    As someone who recalls the VHS era, I certainly do not understand why people get nostalgic for it. Not only pan and scan and horrid quality, but plenty of titles that quickly went OOP as One From The Heart did. Had to make do seeing this on 35mm in 2002 at the BFI and was happy to learn that just under 2 yrs later the USA released a spruced up DVD release, which served me well until I got hold of this 4K release a month or so ago. The film isn’t anything deep, but there is no denying that IMO this film is the father of the modern musical. Shame it took nigh on 20 yrs for Moulin Rouge to finally stress how ahead Coppola was at the time, not to mention he wanted to streamline the production process (and failed) with Electronic Cinema (or better known as the forebear of Digital Cinema)

      I'd never come across One From The Heart at all. I don't think I'd ever even heard of it. I don't tend to like musicals but there are a few that appeal to me and this is one of them. I'm not sure if Mr. Coppola was pointing the way for video projection in cinemas but the adoption of the video cameras within the film cameras was certainly the way to go. Perhaps the everyone involved got a little obsessed with that though which is understandable but wouldn't have helped that balooning budget.

      @@moviecollector5920Not a fan of musicals either. I always say musicals are for the stage, not the screen (that’s how close minded I am😊) I first heard of One From The Heart due to reading about it in biographies of Coppola and it’s production history. IMO the film is an aesthetic marvel whilst both Kinski and the great and sadly late Raul Julia are for me having pure fun.

      @@moviecollector5920 That's odd. There hasn't been a new Terminator film since 2019. The PCC has played 35mm prints of T1 and T2 since then. I know Cameron is Pro-Digital and doesn't rate film. I hope he isn't preventing film screenings of his films. I've seen Aliens twice on 70mm in recent years. Avatar is playing as part of BFI IMAX's 25th Anniversary, but it's a Digital IMAX DCP, and I doubt IMAX 70mm prints of it from 2009 will ever see the light of day again.
      It's funny as back in the day Cameron paid out of his own pocket for 70mm blowup prints of True Lies and Titanic when Fox refused. As they were the highest quality presentations available before showing feature films on IMAX 70mm became an idea.

    I really enjoyed The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. The reason why it didn't do as well as the first is down to The Pandemic, unfortunately. The first was released in 2017. The second was set to be released in Aug 2020, then for obvious reasons had it's release put back a year. Sadly a lot of people were still avoiding cinemas then. I don't know how well it's done on home media, but I can imagine people liking it.

      I did realize the pandemic caused the problem with Hitmans's Wife's Bodyguard David but only after I'd recorded all the blurb and then took a close look at the boxes for the close-up shots. I think the same problem caused the low take for TENET and Last Night In Soho so some great films got all but killed by that pesky virus. And now we know what we know we wouldn't have taken any bloody notice if we'd have known then! John.

    Thanks for this video which brought back some old memories. In the early 80's going the movies was probably the most common form of dating my girlfriend in São Paulo, Brazil. That city is very cosmopolitan and we always checked out foreign films at the Gaumont Cinemas - well my girlfriend always dragged me to them. ON other occasions we'd go to regular ciemas which all had the larger screes i those days. There I watched Blade Runner, Alien, Flash Dance , Raising Arizona, Rumble Fish, 9 1/2 weeks, many more, and "One from the Heart". I can't remember one scene from the movie, but I do remember it was quite different from the normal fair, and that I did like it. I consider myself lucky to have seen so many good movies in their original release versions. Thanks for the review!

    I have just revisited 8MM and you are absolutely right- it's a film that stays with you. There is a decent 1080p bluray available from Germany if you fancy upgrading the DVD by the way. I am a huge Michael Caine fan and I'm interested is seeing that particular pick up of the 4 you choose. One of my favourites with Michael Caine is 'Harry Brown'- another gritty film that stays in the mind. The original 'The Italian Job' is being released on 4K too in the UK any day now-a must buy if the transfer is better than the controversial US release. Can't have enough Mr.Caine on 4K! (imagine how nice those French Mediterranean scenes would look if 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' ever got a 4K release! Very enjoyable video- thanks as always...and by the way, how to you organize your collection?...I am always peeking over your shoulder and wondering!

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Месяц назад

      First of all, there is no organization to my disc and video tape collections. They just go back on the shelf in the order they're watched. I think that if I see a Blu-ray of 8mm I'll have to buy it but the DVD projects rather well so I'm not in any rush. It was probably ten years since I last gave that one a spin. I have the Blu-ray of 'Harry Brown' and that's another with Michael Caine at his best. His best might well be 'The Italian Job' but my favourite film he stars in is 'Zulu'. I did mention that towards the end of this video but cut it out because it was running on far too long. I've never actually seen 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' all the way through so that's another one on the ever lengthening list of movies I've still got to see. He is brilliant in 'The Great Escaper'. He says it's his last film which I can understand. What a great way to bow out after a great career in the movies.

    Good reviews all round John. I was surprised, and maybe a subject for a future video? when you mentioned buying on impulse for the full price of a movie you’d never heard of based purely on what you saw and read on the box. I have bought randomly very rarely like tgat, and at the very least will have heard or seen some mention or reference of it.
    I’ve only seen the Hitman’s Wive’s Bodyguard of the four of these, I find Samuel L Jackson one of the best cursing screen actors, he can pull it off in practically any role and with many different tones and meanings behind it. (The only other ones who come to mins are Danny Aiello, James Woods, and Denis Farina). I think where The Hitman’s Bodyguard got the balance right of action and comedy, so that there were a lot of unexpectedly funny moments which you kind of felt guilty for laughing at, with the sequel they leaned too heavily into the comedy, and dipped a bit more than a toe into spoof territory.it’s the usual issue of a sequel being amde without being as good as the first movie unfortunately. Supposedly the movie that holds the record for the most curse word is The Wolf Of Wall Street, with a number in the 700’s - effectively an average of almost 4 swear words each minute of screen time!
    In other news, Point abreak now has a release date set for a uk 4k release in August - so some 8-9 months after the U.S. release. No info yet on who the releaser is here, but I don’t think the company that did e american disc ever releases things here. Possibly also there are different rights issues in this country,. Also no idea if the source will be the same from the internegative, would be strange if it wasn’t though.

      Morning Andrew. I think I enjoyed 'Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' more than the first film but I might change my mind when I watch them both again one day. I couldn't get through 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and had to turn it off before the end. It wasn't only the language which I didn't find funny, it was the general theme and all the sex which felt dirty to me. I saw Mr. DiCaprio at the premiere for that film which wouldn't have been my first choice for a film of his. I was coming out of the pub next door and there he was.

      Evening Dave. At Film Is Fabulous on Saturday we're going to try to start a discussion about a reintroduction of D-150 into cinemas. Those lenses will work with any projector providing the image fires out straight and not at an angle like just about all home video projectors nowadays. A 120 degree curved screen would be the expensive part but then cinemas would have something different which we wouldn't realistically be able to do at home. 3D would be sensational to keep the kiddies happy too. We'll see how this plan goes but it probably won't get far as cinema managers/chain managers/owners don't seem to have must of a clue these days.
      As for re-releases at the moment, the only way to guarantee an audience is to show a film print.

    Greetings from Santiago de Chile. It may be a coincidence but there are many things in common between "One from the Heart" and "Megalopolis". In both films Francis Ford Coppola said that were personal bets that could not be produce under the model of Hollywood studios. The funny thing is that both movies are huge productions that needed the distribution of a company the size of Paramount, Columbia or Universal to obtain any kind of profits. I believe Coppola is one the greatest filmmakers of all time but not a brilliant producer that can deliver from time a time a film that could connect with the regular audiences and not only with art house's groups. I really want to watch "Megalopolis" but right now I would have to wait until it is release in 4K by a boutique label because there is no possibility of a theatrical release here in Chile. And to be honest unless chilean theaters and distributors make changes in their model of exhibition I will support physical media and streaming as a way to enjoy movies in the best quality possible. Adiós amigo.

      I'd only just heard from a friend this afternoon that Mr. Coppola was possibly repeating the route he went down with 'One From The Heart' with his new film 'Megalopolis'. Cinema over here isn't doing well either and I only tend to go to a cinema when I know a film print is playing because I've had such bad experiences since the introduction of video projection in cinemas. There are some good ones but it tends to mean long journeys so it's easier and cheaper to await a 4K disc release and watch a better presentation at home. So you're not alone Gaspar. I think cinema is in terminal decline almost everywhere so something has to change otherwise it'll be curtains soon!
      Mr. Coppola has made some brilliant films over the years. Looks like he's still a driven man and will take risks for something he believes in.

      That's not really on my lists of interests but video projection has improved in more recent years. Getting back to the quality we enjoyed in the 1990's would be nice but I think we're a way off that yet. What is needed is some different thinking and to do that we need to look to the past for the solutions of the day and with that in mind we showed a D-150 lens in public for the first time yesterday. I intend to push this for cinema use today wherever possible but I'll need a bigger platform than this little RUclips channel.
      If you look up Dimension-150, the beauty of it is that is will work with any cinema projection system. This means that even video projectors still in use from 20 years or more ago will get the benefit. It will make going to the cinema a worthwhile pastime again.

I knew nothing going into it and that might have made the whole air of mystery feel a little bit more appealing than it otherwise would have done. Great location which gives it a dystopian feel. Worth a try for £25 with a very good and informative booklet of 80 pages.
      John.

    Hi, John I have a question for you. I’m a big Sean Connery fan and I just discovered a movie The Offence, have you seen it and do you have an opinion on the Masters of Cinema Blu-ray? Russia House is one of my favorites what do you think?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Месяц назад +1

      I don't think I've ever even heard of 'The Offence' Gary. I'm not the biggest Sean Connery fan but I think he's brilliant in Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Untouchables and as the voice of the dragon in Dragonheart. I still have so many of his films to see and enjoy though but I struggle with some of the early Bond films now so I'll have to try a few of those again soon to see if I've really gone off them. I expect I'll still very much enjoy Thunderball though which I always thought was his best Bond.

    Hello John...are you going to review "The Abyss" and Aliens" or are you avoiding being sucked in 😅

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Месяц назад +1

      I'll do Aliens eventually but I know the film so well that watching any home video release of that one doesn't exactly thrill me. It will be a good excuse for one of my retrospective videos along the lines of Star Wars and Alien though. £25 for something I'll never watch all the way through seems a bit of a waste of money right now so it can wait a while.
      The Abyss should look great irrespective of anything that may have been done to it simply because it always looked great.

    Thanks for sharing John,I seem to remember a film from the 1950’s with a similar name called Night of the Hunter I think it Starred Robert Mitchum.

      Evening Paul. I think there was another film by the same name last year too which is why the spine of this disc caught my eye on the 4K shelves in HMV. I took a look at it and decided it looked interesting enough to buy despite not being the film I hoped it was.

    8 mm is truly disturbing and highly underrated. One From The Heart is on the other hand terrible, there is absolutely no point in keeping watching once Nastassja Kinski has left the screen for the last time.
