  • I finally had the time to get to see Denis Villeneuve's second instalment in his DUNE series and it had to be at the BFI IMAX where they had one of the twelve 15/70 IMAX prints exhibited throughout the world. The fact that there are 15/70 prints is significant as it confirms the impact that Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER had in 2023 which the film industry is now looking to take advantage of. I'm told DUNE PART TWO has been another big success for the BFI and with similar reports coming from genuine IMAX houses around the world it comes as no surprise that there are apparently new productions coming which will be including genuine IMAX sequences shot 15/65 fro 15/70 release.
This video documents my experience of seeing DUNE PART TWO at one of the greatest cinemas in the world today. It is also my review of the film where I also detail some of the technicalities and particularly why I think a blow-up from a 4K digital video master to standard 70mm and the ultimate 15/70 is worthwhile.
We also talk to Hardik who is currently studying in the UK from India. Hardik is another true film enthusiast and he's excited to be able to see these 15/70 prints at the BFI IMAX. His first experience was TENET a few months ago but he's also impressed with the results from the 15/70 blow-up of DUNE PART TWO.
Finally, we have a FILM IS FABULOUS event coming up at The Courtyard Cinema in Hereford which I detail towards the end of this video. I'll be on a panel discussion about the Film Is Fabulous project, how we are saving films and how it is that film collectors have often proved to be the saviours of so many films that otherwise would have been lost from the world forever. To purchase tickets for this event on 1st JUNE 2024 click on the link here to the Hereford Courtyard: www.courtyard.org.uk/events/f...
To learn all about FILM IS FABULOUS and the pilot study currently ongoing as I type, click here: filmisfabulous.org.uk/
To keep up to date with everything that is coming up at the BFI IMAX it is advisable to sign up to their regular free email newsletters or in lieu of that to keep an eye on their WHAT'S ON page here: whatson.bfi.org.uk/imax/Onlin...

I agree with your opinion of the film as a whole, but I did have a great time experiencing the film in IMAX at Lincoln Square, New York City. It's the largest IMAX screen in the United States, and what a rush! The sand worm sequence was exhilarating and the sound design just mind-blowing. In the end, it's still a really good sci-fi epic. But not capital G Great in my opinion.

@@foxyfoxtrot4233 You've got to be sure you're seeing a 15/70 IMAX shot 15/65 as nothing else comes close. The Guardians of the Galaxy films weren't IMAX as far as I know. They might have had the name but that was probably just the use of the name to get people in. The trouble is that people then think they've seen IMAX which they certainly haven't. Look at the astounding image quality of TENET, DUNKIRK or OPPENHEIMER and all the faux IMAX movies pale to insignificance by comparison. Please let me know if you do ever manage to see the real McCoy sometime Foxy as I'd like to know your thoughts... which should be somewhat positive!

Hey there, this is Chris from Oregon and just wanted to give ya an update! I had the chance to see Dune 2 on 15/70MM at Universal Cinema Citywalk in Hollywood CA, it was such an experience indeed and thank goodness it doesn’t look as artificial when I saw Napoleon 70MM since they did a “digital to print” during production like the same way with The Batman since it’s the same cinematographer.
Also seeing Once Upon A Time In Hollywood from Tarantino’s personal print was an absolute joy. There was some bonus scenes/pre intro before the film started including an Red Apples cigarette commercial and an extended episode of Bounty Law with Michael Madsen as a cameo!
It definitely beats the lie-max option at my home state and I’ll fly back again when there will be another 15/70MM showing and a TRUE shot on 15/70MM IMAX film! I will at least fly back around July for my 26th birthday and I’ll be going to see Deadpool And Wolverine with my best friend. One will be at the world fan event Disney theater premiere called the El Capitan which is an old landmark broadway theater from the 1920s. Even Citizen Kane premiered there.
it’s one of the expensive movie ticket I ever purchased costing over $60 USD per person…but it comes with popcorn with a collectible tin, drink merch etc while I heard they’re supposed to make it an experience by seeing costume props, photo opportunities and I even heard a celebrity cameo so we shall see. I haven’t been into a marvel movie since Spider Man No Way Home and Deadpool And Wolverine certainly isn’t a bad birthday present to get. Can’t lie either the inner geek within me is excited to see Jackman in the original comic costume.
The second place I’ll be seeing it at finally will be The Chinese Theater itself so I can cross off the bucketlist. This time instead of comparing on the video quality, I’m gonna compare to the speakers. The El Capitan is equipped with Dolby Vision and Atmos while the Chinese has an IMAX 12 channel speaker with 4K dual laser. Definitely won’t be Nolan or Denis level of quality of course but it’s something.
Now I’m just waiting on Tarantino’s theater to release the July movie schedule as well as the other landmark showings like the Egyptian theater. Suffice to say it is gonna be a fun birthday trip nonetheless despite not being Oppenheimer/Dune quality, but the Tarantino prints will make up for it!

It seems to me Chris that you're living the cinema experience we had up until the latter part of the 1990's when it all started turning to xxxx! I've been into the El Capitan on Hollywood Boulevard if that's the 'El Capitan you're talking about. A great cinema but back when I was in there it was top quality because it was a premiere theatre screening master prints and also boasting a THX sound system. Those were the days. The new Deadpool & Wolverine release probably isn't a film but the trailer was run at the BFI IMAX prior to Dune Part Two and it didn't look too bad. I don't think it looked as appealing as the new Mad Max spin-off Furiosa. What a shame we can only see any of these movies video projected but that's how they're shot and although the quality isn't quite up to 35mm yet there would be little point in outputting the 4K video master files to 35mm as the expense would preclude that and there wouldn't be much - if any - benefit of doing so.
Have a good time with all your ongoing cinematic adventures Chris. I'm off to the Hereford Courtyard next Saturday to see these 16mm televsion programmes from the 1960's the team have saved. They've been transferred to video for screening on the day as we can't risk the sole surviving copies of these previously lost pieces of television history.
      John.

@@moviecollector5920Fury Road is the only movie I’ve brought myself to bring five times in theaters cause the sound mixing and the adrenaline rush is pure amazing. I went to see Furiosa on the very first showing on Cinemark XD with THX Certified speakers which is the highest quality we can get in the state and suffice to say even with Miller being 80 years old, he still has the spirits of filmmaking. It is too bad we don’t have the options for seeing it on 35MM or on celluloid but that doesn’t mean it can happen once in a blue moon. My friend got to see Fury Road on 35MM at Tarantino’s theater and recently A24’s Civil War was shown on 35MM at the vista theater. I also saw The First Omen on 35MM at my indie theater so I guess it just depends what film they’re willing to print out for. But in the end I’m sure ready for my trip!!!
And yes it is the same El Capitan on Hollywood! Disney did a whole renovation to it and luckily found the original 1920s and paint decor so they made sure to keep it to the original look as possible! There’s also a pipe organ built in which they play before every screening. If they done a fan event for Furiosa that would be badass but too bad they ain’t Disney to pull that type of stuff like that lol.
Going out of country and visiting the UK is definitely on my list and if the schedule aligns perfectly I’ll be sure to stop by on your film fest activities or hope to catch you at a BFI imax showing!

The 15/70 film prints are likely the best way to enjoy this film but I do wonder if it might look better in the 2.40:1 frame ratio. I guess we'll find out soon with the 4K discs but that will likely only make itself obvious in home cinemas with variable masking to maximize the widescreen format over the flat 1.85:1 ratio.
Good to know Melbourne are still using film whenever possible. The tenth anniversary of INTERSTELLAR should result in screenings of that providing Melbourne still have their 15/70 print. If you haven't seen that in genuine 15/70 IMAX then prepare for the ultimate cinema experience ever.

You always have to look to the past for solutions today as there's never anything new under the sun. That's certainly the case with home video collectors whereas I tend to have our laser video projector set to 50% brightness which is the lowest setting. Film projectors have the mechanical shutter and the film itself diffusing the light so there's just so much more going on and it somehow all works better. It does to my eyes anyway. The movie was fantastic and the picture and sound quality was also top notch. After this positive expirience I went about to buy Dune Part I, and part 2 will also be purchased in the near future. In regard to trilogies and two - part sequels, we have to judge the individual movies in the context of series. If you want to see IMAX in its purest form then keep an eye our for screenings of movies such as TENET, DUNKIRK, OPPENHEIMER and INTERSTELLAR which have a lot of scenes shot 15/65 for genuine 15/70 prints. They do have to be seen projected 15/70 though otherwise so much of the astounding quality is lost. not all cinemas boasting the IMAX name are 15/70 capable with only around 30 in the world that I know of having had the foresight to keep the ultimate film projection equipment all these years. I suspect that DUNE PART TWO is going to give a better impact in the 'Scope frame Nick so I'll be interested to see if I feel that same when I do finally get the 4K disc. Nothing is ever going to compare to the BFI screening but as a home video, I think the 2.40:1 frame will suit it best... at least in my home cinema so I don't have all that aspect ratio shifting. The shifting is a bit of a problem in here because to get the 1.78:1 sequences to have the full impact I have to reduce the width of the screen and I prefer to project movies at the screen's widest setting. For Oppenheimer I put a matte in front of the porthole to mask off the top and left the side masking fully open thereby giving a ratio of about 2.0:1 for the 1.78:1 sequences.

Sorry to learn of your sad news Stephen. My ol' dad died about two months ago and it causes a lot of work in addition to the angst of going through it all. I'll have to try to shoot a video at the Hereford event but the team are going to record the panel discussion anyway so that will turn up somewhere. I must remember to behave myself for that.
Good luck with getting your mother's funeral and estate fully sorted. I hope it's not too cumbersome a process but it's bound to be a very upsetting time.

The back two rows which are the most expensive. The important thing is that you have so much leg room in the back two rows. I've sat right in the front far right seat and still been astounded by the show so anywhere is good but if you prefer to take in the whole image as easily as possible then the further back you are the better. If you want to feel like you're fully immersed in the image on screen then close to the front is recommended. Above all, make sure you are going to see a film with genuine IMAX 15/70 sequences. Get registered on the BFI IMAX mailing list and have a look for what they've got coming because they're announcing a whole lot of genuine 15/70 films at the moment for the 25th anniversary of the glass palace.

Hi John, it surprisingly it makes total sense to present a movie like Dune 2 in 15/70mm, due to the disadvantages of IMAX Dual 4K Laser GTs.
Compaired to the 4K Dual Laser Screenings for 1.43 Screens, where you have 4.096 x 2.160 total resolution, vertically (2.160) the image is streched by amount of 32% with the anamorphic lens in the Projector permanently.. SO, in 1.43 Scenes you have max. 2.160 Pixels from top to bottom of the screen, in the rest 1.9 Scences, only (68% vertically) is used, that's only 1.470 Pixels vertically on the gigant screen in 1.9.
To remember, the Camera used, Alexa LF in Opengate Mode for 1.43 Scenes, has 4.608 x 3.164 Resoultion, so that 10 year, stone old IMAX 4K Dual Laser System is not capable of showing (very needed) more than a third of the Source Resolution.
Here the much more suited 50 Year old 15/70mm Technology comes into play, were the Kodak Cinevator 8K is optical printing all digital Information available to an ultra detailed Kodak 2383 Print Film.
At second, the 70mm Dune 2 Picture must be more clear on the Screen not only because of more Information, but also because the insufficient Dual 4K Laser System is projecting with half a Pixel Overlay next to each other, with results in a "softer" little smudgier Picture to "pretend/perceived" more Information, which is BS of course.
We don't even talk about the asthetics of real Film on a screen, with real (fine) grain and film color Interpretation :-) Cheers, Michael

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Месяц назад +1

There isn't an IMAX cinema in Denmark James so what you have there is one of the faux IMAX houses. Even the genuine ones (only about 30 or so in the world) can't screen Furiosa in IMAX as it's a video so what you're watching is a digital video projection through an IMAX branded video projector. The maximum resolution for any of the faux IMAX houses is just over 4K so about 1\15th the quality of a genuine IMAX film such as OPPENHEIMER. DUNE PART TWO is a 4K video printed onto 15/70 film. I don't know the exact process for how this was done but as some of the movie was shot at 6.5K it's possible that the 1.43:1 sequences might have been output at that size for the IMAX film prints. 6.5K is actually estimated to be superior resolution capability to 35mm which itself is about one tenth the resolution capability of 15/70. The sheer size of 15/70 is what makes the image quality so astoundingly good. Nothing else comes close providing the film was shot 15/65 for 15/70 release. 70mm prints have the extra 5mm added for the soundtracks but that's superfluous now as the sound is run in sync' from a computer via a code on the film itself.
Sorry this is a long reply but I wanted to fill you in on what IMAX really is and how it has been downgraded in more recent years other than in the 30 (ish) genuine IMAX cinemas. It would help if all the myriad different versions had different identities or names. Maybe I'll see you in London one day for the real IMAX experience.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Месяц назад +2

To start with the best LaserDiscs could rival DVD but sadly the 16x9 anamorphic solution first developed for LaserDisc never made it onto the market as far as I know. This makes a big difference. Another big difference is that equipment has changed and whereas tellies in the 1990's were perfect for LaserDisc, now they're crap for LaserDisc. I do still have a video projector with a proper AV input on it and LD is best on that out of everything I still have to view videos with. So the answer to your question is DVD is generally superior and because of upscaling HDMI technology DVD is often far superior and almost to Blu-ray standard. But there's something special about LaserDisc that nothing else has ever quite matched and I think it's the wonderful packaging and the huge silver discs. But if you can find either of the ABBA Gold LaserDiscs then you'll find the discs are actually gold.

Three hours is worth it for a genuine IMAX Eric so if you get the chance to see any of the four or five most recent Christopher Nolan films then see if you can do it. I don't suppose there are many IMAX houses left of the standard of the BFI IMAX but even so, the image quality should still be on a par even if the sound is unlikely to quite match it. TENET might be the best sound I've ever heard but I'd have to watch DUNE PART TWO and TENET back to back in the IMAX to check that.

I still didn't get on with it very well which was a shame because I thought that after working out TENET it would make a whole lot more sense. It probably did but I just don't like it much. Maybe a third viewing sometime will do the trick. As for your plan to get to see the real deal, full Monty genuine IMAX screening of OPPENHEIMER, what a good idea. I don't think it's the most impressive of his films to see in IMAX but from a critical standpoint I think it's his best work. INTERSTELLAR is the best cinema experience I've ever had (twice) so perhaps if you see that's one's getting a special screening for its tenth anniversary later this year you might actually prefer that. Maybe I can get another chance in London. I hope the movie will be shown a couple of times more this year. Saw it on a Dual Laser at IMAX Sinsheim on a 22x27m screen, it was amazing. Want to see it on film someday. I boycott the Blu-ray because we don’t even get a 16:9 full screen transfer. I refuse to look at the big black bars, when this was only a choice of someone in charge of production of the Blue-ray, and the source material is definitely available. I don’t want the pure 4:3 on a modern TV either, like Zack Snyder did it. So for me 16:9 is the best compromise for home theater when watching Imax films. Changing of aspect ratio during the film, like Nolan’s Batman, is also okay for me, I don’t notice it.

That's a faux IMAX Kamandi so not worth considering other than it having a huge 16x9 screen. It's only 4K video projection so sub-standard and particularly so compared to the quality we were enjoying up to about 25 to 30 years ago. To put it in context, 4K video is around 1/15th the quality of genuine IMAX.
The Empire was the greatest cinema in the world as far as I was concerned but the general downturn in image quality adversely affected even the top cinemas towards the end of the 1990's. By 2005/2006 I was so disappointed by everything I was looking at - and most accutely at The Empire - that I gave up on cinema and with further worse disappointments for a few years after that I started to only go to a cinema when I knew a film print was being screened. But I do have a possible solution for cinema today and we're hoping to reveal it at Film Is Fabulous at the Hereford Courtyard next Saturday.

If a local cinema here was screening the new Mad Max spin-off FURIOSA in this format then I would have been there on opening night. There isn't an IMAX in Watford so it must be one of the video variants that proliferate. It's not the real McCoy for which there is nothing that compares or even comes close. That's not so important with DUNE PART TWO as it was only a digital video to start with so the twelve 15/70 prints struck for the world are much lower quality (about 15 or maybe even times lower) than genuine IMAX films which have been shot 15/65 for 15/70 release such as OPPENHEIMER. The good news is that OPPENHEIMER has started a resurgence of film and that is why I believe the DUNE PART TWO standard 70mm and 15/70 prints have been struck. Apparently a whole load of films are currently being shot or in the works that will include 15/65 sequences for genuine 15/70 IMAX release prints. The digital video faux IMAX houses should really use a different name for each of the myriad systems because many people think the name 'IMAX' means they've seen IMAX.

I had the same thing with the 4K of the first film a couple of years ago because people were telling me it was the best 4K disc they'd ever seen. The reality was that it wasn't anywhere near the best. I think what happens is that people tend to get excited when they really like a movie and want it to be the best quality.
