Night sailing to the Port of Dover

  • A night crossing of the Thames Estuary to visit the Port of Dover.
    Night sailing is an experience not to be avoided nor is it to be taken lightly in an area like the Thames Estuary. The amount of lighting from the windfarms and shipping in transit means some of the navigational markers I found to be quite difficult to identify. Running aground on the notorious sandbars on route was simply not an option. Proper planning and the use of all available navigational aids were essential.

      I would suggest somewhere like eastbourne, Dover or ramsgate. Good access to London reasonably priced and well protected. Thanks for watching!

    its shortest (reasonable) navigable route though ;) to qualify as a 60nm+ for yacht master etc. although im pretty sure you will be OK from Orwell to dover.

    Hi Sam,
    I've just bought my first yacht - a Hurley 22. Laid up in Hayling Island at the moment. These are an excellent set of videos from which I have learnt loads. Many thanks. Winter maintenance now, so I off to get some Y10. If you're ever down this way I'd really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on my Hurley - I'm trying to sort out the galley. And if is a nice day we could go sailing; happy to pay for some boat tuition. Regards Ed

      Hi Ed, thank-you for watching my videos and congrats on your purchase. If next year behaves itself then I plan on some longer trips. Chichester harbour is one of them so we may run into each other. If you're not already on it then the Hurley Owners fb page is a good source of information. All the best with your winter maintenance plans.

    Brilliant. Just watched your return from Dover video but comments are switched off. Really like the way you explain your trips and what, how and why you are doing things. Look forward to your next video 👍
    BTW, Is your spray hood home made?

      Thanks for watching, its great to recieve positive feedback. The sprayhood is a home built GRP moulded from a plywood shape. I have a video of the build. Thanks, Sam

    Sam a great video and really informative and entertaining. I've read the description, was this effectively a training exercise for yourself?

    • @samsails9820
      @samsails9820  2 года назад

      Hi Sp3ktral, thanks for watching, this was a mile building passage and also a tick in the box for crossing the Thames estuary at night, This wasn't overly complex but demonstrated you can't really get away with taking 10 minute napping sessions like you could on longer open water passages. Its definitely a continuous watch passage.

    Hi Sam. Great video and great trip. I'm based at Ramsholt on the Deben and, having nothing else to do during this lockdown I have been planning this same trip and had decided to come out of the Deben, sail directly out to Long sands and then follow your route so I was really pleased to see your video. Tell me, what video app are you using? Love Navionics by the way, so simple to use.

      Hi Rod, thanks for subscribing and glad you enjoyed this video. All the best for your planned trip to Dover. Just a heads up, albeit you probably already know, the ebb tide through the Dover straights actually starts about two hours before high water dover. This is where I messed up a little. Its a good idea to round north and south foreland with a tide. I use Filmora video editor.

    Hi great vid and very informative, I am planning to do the same route in the next few week. Based on how your trip went what timing would you leave the Orwell to make best use of the tides my boat speed is about the same as yours.

    • @samsails9820
      @samsails9820  2 года назад

      I tend to plan for an estimated arrival time and work backwards with the passage planning, there are no restrictions at either end with tidal heights for this trip no locks or sand bars. Preferably you want to time your arrival around headlands better to your advantage. As I've previously mentioned in another comment, look at the tidal stream charts for the area and do best to arrive at north foreland approx 4 hours before HW Dover. I didn't and lost groundspeed as a result. Cut close to south foreland and the tide will have less effect. Thanks for watching!!!

    Migrant boats without anybody sounds good to most British folk. The Border Force taxi service is a disgrace to them.

      Like I say everyone has their own opinion, they are well and truly entitled to it. There's no wrong or right only a horrible situation from either perspective. Thanks for watching 👍
