  • In this video I talk about one of my favorite spots to source material, being antique malls/shops. I believe they are hidden gems and not many dealers seem to take advantage of these spots. I also show the buys I made to give a little inside scoop at the deals I made and hope to make after they sell. Hope you enjoy the video!

    As a collector I go to dozens of library book sales every year (though not this year-they've all been cancelled) and always find that one-in-thousand gem in their Vintage section--including a 1911 Ghost Stories of New England that mysteriously disappeared from the counter to my car. Still can't figure that one out!

      I love going to the library sales, have found great treasures! Someone probably swiped it on you, it's happened to me and since then when I go to the big sales I bring two people with me, one follows and brings the books to the location of the third guy and then comes back to me. It's ridiculous but if someone eyes something of value that you've found (esp. other dealers) they'll wait for their chance. I've seen it happen as well to others, not good.

    I totally understand the thrill of the hunt amongst old books. As a reader, you can find the most amazing old gems that you like to read. ( not resell) for me I mean, to read the books one is interested in.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  3 года назад

      The hunt is soooo much fun. Wish I had more time to read myself. It can be a bit of a love hate relationship because some of the rarer books that I would love to keep for myself and collect, I just can't afford to :/ I can't justify keeping them when I can turn them for a good profit. At least I get to handle them though for a period of time and have a great time doing it! Thanks for watching Christine!

    This video has just popped up in my recommended so thanks! Adding this to my list of tasks for this weekend. You’ve actually just reminded me that I walk past one of those small antique stores every day. I’ve often wondered how he makes any business as it seems like such an odd spot. I’ve never been in either but I always say hi to the old guy who runs it whenever I see him, and he seems like a nice guy, so may have to see if he’s got any books hidden away too.
    You said you go with your gut. I’m afraid mine can’t be trusted yet. But I’m not a fan of comping on the go either, especially in small/busy stores. Mistakes have definitely been made though fortunately nothing too disastrous.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  11 месяцев назад +1

      I'm sure he'd really appreciate you coming in and giving it a chance 😊 - you'll learn from your mistakes if they're made, it's a part of developing an eye for the buying. It can be a bit nerve wrecking at first, you'll question yourself and be uncertain but as long as you're not going broke it'll be okay! Take your time! You don't have to buy anything either, enjoy it if you go - hey by the way, ask him if he comes across books, I'm sure he does, maybe you could develop a connection there. Good luck, have fun!

      @@thebookpeddler thanks, Phil! I really appreciate the encouragement :) He’s not online or on social so I feel there’s a bigger chance of coming across something interesting but I definitely have to go in to find out… an adventure!

    Phil, I'm a new seller and followed your tip to go to an antique shop like you suggested here. Usually I just go to estate sales and library book sales, but decided to check out a local antique shop. The seller wanted $5 per book, no matter which book because they got them from estate sales. Ended up getting 6 Northwestern University yearbooks for $25 on a deal. Sold them all in a day for $430. Can't thank you enough!

      I'm glad it worked out for you! I really enjoy the antique stores, sometimes you have to pay up a little but if you know what you're doing and what's desirable you can still make great turn overs. Great job, glad you found value in this video! Thanks for the comment and support as well Tob, means a lot - Phil

    Sourcing vintage and antiquarian requires a form of intuition, lifelong interest, pattern recognition, and risk. It is great. And then if you get a few piles or tubs of stuff that is so-so, you can trade it with a flea market seller for cash to get it gone, besides the good stuff you resell online.
