my favorite movie, it's bizarre that professional critics hated it so badly, it's like it caused an irrational derangement syndrome among them. Their reviews literally made no sense, it's like they were talking about a different movie.

My favorite part of the intro is when a glimpse of Dr. Sledge's pocket watch seems to reveal that it's running backwards! Einstein would approve.

In 1998 a dealer I knew had a 17th century copy of Agrippa's Occult Philosophy Books 1 to 4 ....(yes, books 1 to 4, not just 1 to 3) all bound in a single volume in English. I was filled with 17th century marginalia and was in great condition for its age with full leather binding - I personally have never seen another similar copy come up for sale. He wanted £1200 British pounds (I guess then around $2000) for it and I just couldn't afford that price back then so I had to pass on it. He later told me a friend had sold it on the internet....neither he nor I quite understood how the internet worked in the late '90's, but it sold for £1700.00. Oh how I still badly regret not buying that book....

Wow this video brought back some memories. Back in the stone age my friend braved driving into Manhattan to the old Weiser's bookstore to introduce me to where to get "real" occult books, not pop culture ones. I am glad he validated my feeling the supply was diminishing, a great guest. Thank you.

I recently started “attempting” to collect occult books and I figured a good place to look would be in New Orleans since I was traveling there at the time. One store was completely bought out… another had their occult section only bought out. I was discouraged. The latter shared the same block as a Jesuit cathedral. Things that make u go “hmmmm” 🤔🤭🤫

@@jypsywith_a_jae7575 there are a lot of anonymous people who are filthy rich, the kind who could easily buy the bookstore if they wanted, they can sweep up a whole inventory of whatever they happen to focus on, no big deal.

Ive got a few books from Dr Israel Regardie,Aryeh Kaplen and Agrippas “3 Books”. Had them for pushing 20 years and cant even think of getting rid of them. I keep them in full view with my Torah and they are just a part of me. Its like they were meant to belong to me and to never part my side. There is a history between me and those books that is a part of my soul and its like the books know it. Its actually my wishes to be buried or cremated with them. Dont know why,havnt studied them in a few years but its like they are suppose to be with me. Kaplans “Sefer Yetzirah” kinda keeps the letters spinning in a circle around my head. I dont know any other way to explain it.
A pity you wish to take them with you. I might die rather than destroy something more rare than myself.

If the previous owner would have decided to be buried/cremated with the books, you wouldn’t have the great pleasure to own them now. Perhaps the book(s) could be left in your will, for example, to the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, a section of the Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Also, see comment from Gerhard Heydrich.

Just to let anyone know if 5hey dont know, Ebay has all these books and more on CD for pennies. That's where I get all my copies. If you have a laptop you can load them all on there and read them. Just got 180 antique occult books on CD for 13 dollars! Theres so many it will blow your mind! It's the cheapest way for knowledge I've ever discovered!
Yes, with the internet we can find almost everything there is. Even very specific arcane books can be found on PDF file . I used to work for a antique dealer .He was specialized in furniture but also bought and sold some books now and then. The people I met mostly bought these books as an investment or as a show piece . Not to read. ( Now I only met a few collectors, so there obviously are also other type of collectors out there who actually read the original text.)

I am planing a role playing campaing set during 30 yers war And having flaworful spells would be nice, but I have not found any good resource about individual spells (except you). Do you know sny sourge that has at least summary of spells found in real grimoires?

Cool discussion! I own a copy of the Directorium Inquisitorum from 1595 (36:03). It has a very ancient-looking stamp on the title page and a Hebrew manuscript was used as lining for the book's spine. Despite its decrepit appearance, it causes me to pause. a), people were burned at the stake because of this book. b) innocent people of Jewish descent were also persecuted as a result of this book. The fact that a Hebrew manuscript is in the structure of the book itself is mind boggling. It is sobering to know that as I hold this book, several human lives are also held in the balance.

@@TheEsotericaChannel Nice of you to offer the option. I got the book from Austria. It's part of an occult book section that I added for my wife. She'd never part with it. I'm so clueless that I tried to have it rebound, but restorers refused to do it. They told me that the Hebrew manuscript that's showing through the spine is priceless. It's an early example of a practice that's supposed to be common as of the 17th century. My copy is from 1595.
Yep, it's binders waste, quite popular with today's collectors. I'd love to see some photos of it if you could send them!

Call me a monster but there would be something uniquely interesting about books that led to the burning or execution of people, either because of the heretical contents or because it extoled the virtue of going after X group. I can't imagine finding it spooky or creepy, a book is just a book, it'd be more of a vehicle for musing about such matters. All in all great discussion, I'd definitely love a follow up of the good Doctor's collection, assuming he has any texts worth mentioning.
"Often we're the stewards of the past, whether we want to be or not". That's got a bit of weight in it sir, and the application can be wildly broad. I've encountered this truth even within my own microscopic universe. Well said.

If I were able to ask a question, I'd ask, What knowledge of non-English languages might be necessary in order to manage effectively in the rare book world, e.g. Latin, Greek, Arabic, etc.? Oh and, of course, Hebrew (duh).
Maybe Adam can field this question if he sees it
