Listing Mistake, Book Variants, Listing Tools & Merry Christmas :)
I just figured I'd make a quick raw video on a listing mistake I made on a particular boys' series book and give a simple breakdown how different variants within books can make for major swings in price points. Also addressing some issues I've seen with the "Sell Similar" option Ebay provides for us to list our books. Hope you enjoy! Merry Christmas everyone!

I use a simple post it note on the flyleaf with date, location of purchase and total costs (similar to what you stated). You are 100 percent correct in establishing a good inventory system. Until I did that there were times when it took me about an hour to find an item. I do catalog certain books above a price point. IMHO, great photos and accurate descriptions work very well. Thanks again for the wonderful information.

If I am not mistaken one or perhaps two of the signature verification companies do offer an online review. The accuracy of those online signature reviews, I just don't know. A couple of years ago I had a 1st Ed signed copy(all flashpoints) of American Sniper by Kyle. A prospective buyer paid to have an online review of that signature and sent me the report. The report alleged that the signature was not an original. To be on the safe side, I pulled the listing. A short time later the prospective buyer wanted to purchase the book at a bottom feeder price, I declined. I did some digging and found out that he was a seller of these specific books (not hard to do) under a different name. Be careful out there !! Great content as usual and thanks for sharing.

Hi Phil, I wanted to wish you a merry Christmas and also a big thanks for all the content this year. This past month I landed a full time job at an ABAC/ILAB used and rare book store in my city, a mid-age career change and a bit of a dream come true, and I owe a part of it to your channel. I got my foot in the door there as a scout, and I found your channel through your interview "The Last Book Scout" and used tips and advice on sourcing books that I found there and in some of your other videos. At one point, I also asked you for some book recommendations about book selling, and you took the time to send me a big list. I tracked them all down and read them. During the interview, the owner and I talked about the very books you recommended, and I think it played a big role in my landing the job. Anyway, I wanted to give you a big thanks for what you're doing. I can honestly say your videos and your channel have greatly improved my life. Enjoy your holidays :)

Publishing/Printing history can be tough to figure out--you really need to dig deep into multiple copies of the same book or a category of books from a single publisher. Once you unlock the keys, you'll find all sorts of wrong listings on Ebay--such as 1974 First Edition copies of Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends clearly marked HarperCollins, which didn't exist until 1989! I've only found one 1st Edition 1st printing (sadly, no DJ and in so-so shape) in many years of scooping up every copy I find. I was called out this year (in a helpful way) about a Harry Potter First Edition (later printings still state first edition in some cases)---so complicated, and sometimes these wrong listings can saturate and tank the market. I recently found a signed Paul Newman first edition and I was able to compare signatures with another copy online. They were almost identical but just different enough to account for variance that happens when you sign your name repeatedly--plus it had a pamphlet from a cooking event he would have attended as a judge--really hard to tell sometimes when you just have one copy. Merry Christmas, Phil! May your cup be full of cheer or whatever's in that bottle you keep in your desk drawer!

@ I had seen the set sell multiple time at $3000-3200 and none sold at $4000. They were the only on the market, and thought they could command a higher price, but I’d rather sell faster at a price I know I can get.

Thank you so much for this information. Wish there was a reference book for girls'' series. I have discovered whole series of books I never knew existed. Such fun I don't sell much vintage from before the 1960s on EBay, so I do take advantage of Sell Similar. BUT . . . I always check every setting entered against the book in my hand, and spend time on the copyright/print history page. I find that many of the 20s-30s books are difficult to identify the actual publisher. I would never use Sell Simiar, except it does save me time entering things like entering the title, author publisher names (just proof),. But, for example, I would never trust another seller to have correctly entered the information on a 19th centery James Fenimore Cooper, for example. It can be a good source for information to check, thoug Enjoy your content so much, so thank you so much for this information. Have wonderful holidays! I escaped from the North Country to Michigan.

Wow. I sure wish I would have seen this sooner!! I'm 62 years old now and I don't know much about the internet! This sure would have been a great help for me ! A Few years ago my mother passed away and in her house there was a lot of old collectibles. Lots of old cook books and some other books. Plus magazines anywhere from the 1930s to somewhere into the 90s I never thought that they might be worth money! Most of them are gone now but I keep a few of them from like the 70s and 80s Life magazines, Time and a couple Rolling Stones magazines back from the 70s. If anyone is interested in them please try to contact me somehow. Randy Dillingham

I have got an English bookshop here in France (suburbs) on the side of my teaching business. The city is small and although people love the idea, the foot traffic was slow so I decided to limit the opening hours to only 2 options when we don't have lessons. I tried e-bay for 10 months, had 6 orders so I decided to leave. Started Vinted month and half ago and sales are through the roof so I will be definitely concentrating on that.

Thank you for the helpful thoughts Phil. I was thinking about this a few days ago; Would you consider a Q&A livestream that focuses on this subject? You've answered many questions in your past videos, but I imagine there are many more questions that I haven't even considered and you haven't covered yet. (Maybe you will in your part 3) I find it so helpful to sit at a table with a "meeting of the minds" to throw ideas around and hear off the cuff discussions. In this case a "virtual table" would work perfectly if scheduled with enough notice, and the chat would allow that. Just a thought. I'd sure find it invaluable. Thank you again!

I, for one, I wouldn't become a break dancer--I'm not one--obviously to prove to anyone that I can dance. I became a book seller because I love being surrounded by them. You don't necessarily have to read everything that you plan to sell. But you need to have enough knowledge to know what sell. If you're starting out, I would advise any aspiring bookseller to visit bookstores and study what they're displaying as their best sellers. That's just one method of many. Learn as you go. If you're going to pay the bills with the income made from book sales--don't rely on taking breaks. This is not a business/job where you're looking forward to a two week yearly vacation. If you're lazy, hate lifting, listing, and looking/hunting for books/collections--bookselling is not for you. The hustle is real. There are no breaks. Becoming a street bookseller is a whole different MONSTER. Consider this: booksellers are, more often than not, a car repair away from depression. Ease your way into the book selling hustle. DO NOT LEAVE A GOOD PAYING JOB FOR UNKNOWN TERRITORY--ESPECIALLY IF YOUR LADY IS USED TO: vacations, trips to the nail salon, and dinning out. Joey, I suggest you watch, here on RUclips, the documentary Book Wars. I know some of the guys in the film. It gives an insight into the book hustling world on a street level. Phil has provided excellent advice that you should definitely consider. Keep in mind it's a lonely journey the majority of the time.

The best part of this video is when you cover how to live with this knowledge. (around 22:00 to 25:00) I grew up with healthy doses of this type of information. I was shocked in college and then in business with how people figuratively put their hands over their ears and chanted "La la la--la la la, I can't hear you!". You also suggest to "learn how to separate yourself". *Well said*! There are things I know and have seen/experienced. Bothers me deeply, so now I avoid exposure to it. Not sticking my head in the sand that it exists but choosing other issues that I can tackle and still remain upbeat. This is an important video! I'm glad I found it, and that it is still around. Much respect to you!
