    Found this via your excellent conversation with Max Ruback. I'm just starting out and I find this stuff extremely useful for the tips you drop along the way, but mostly it's just such a great motivation to try to get to a point where I know how to/have the means to get lots like this with such beautiful books to resell. Greatly appreciated, and a relief to know through people like you and Max that there is a real way to make a living on older books

      Thank you Grant, it's been quite the process but every year gets better. That's great your daughter is in the business and you help her out, I'm sure she's extremely appreciative, I'm blessed to have my parents helping me as well, it can be a very tough business so what a blessing for her to have her Dad in her corner too. Best of luck to you both, keep up the good work!

      Oh man I know all about that for sure hahaha, hope you did well today at the sale! I just did an interview with a youtuber, "Katey Reads" yesterday and I told her the one thing that still gets my blood pumpin are the estate sales etc. And to get to bed I used to go out drinking until I passed out. I don't do that anymore but I get it, the anticipation! Haha

    Great content and thanks for sharing. The old “box lot shuffle” ! Many years ago while attending auctions in the New England area this stunt was a common feature. We would keep a close eye on the lots that held our interest. During one box lot auction the auctioneer was fed up with the shuffling. He announced the terms of the auction by stating that anyone was allowed to come to the podium a final time up and look into the boxes. For a time afterwards that stopped the box lot shuffle nonsense. I then started using that routine at other box lot auctions.

      New England from what I've been told is very cut throat when it comes to the book dealers. The "box lot shuffle" def is a crowd favorite, bastards 😊 - thanks for watching - by the way, I like how the auctioneer handled that, that's the way to do it

      It's great to have that outlet! What you're currently doing is pretty much the idea behind my new building, creating another outlet to move that percentage that I don't list. I hope to at some point get it to rival my Ebay sales, and have both buildings eventually surpassing my Ebay sales.

    Sorry to hear that someone stole from you. I too have had good and bad experiences with auctions. You should see some of the tricks played with farm toys!! Those guys put the book auctions in the shade. I also have had items stolen, but usually only at live auctions. Some of these farm toys are several hundred dollars apiece, so you can imagine the frustration involved when someone gets sticky fingers. I totally agree with you; trust and reputation are all we have in our business dealings. When that trust is violated, bad things usually follow. Looking forward to your upcoming video about your auction experiences!!

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah there's tricks in every kind of auction. I know a guy who buys a lot of vehicles at auction to flip. People will disassemble wires to make it seem less desirable. The thievery, to the ghost bids etc. etc. it can be quite a screw fest. I must say that yes I do believe the book auctions to not be among the worst, I think there are more so innocent mistakes made but again like any field there's extreme crookedness too and when you've done them for awhile it becomes pretty apparent in distinguishing between the two. I'll try and get that video out later down the road. Thanks for watching!

    The online auction staff is usually so busy trying to help people find their lots and get them packed up and deal with people coming and asking questions, that they really don’t pay attention to who is taking what. My guess is it was another auction winner who had some items in the same room as your books and knew what to cherry pick. And when people are putting things in boxes and bags to carry them out, no one checks. I know for a fact that auction winners will take things from lots that they did not win. Simply because it’s convenient and no one is watching them.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  11 месяцев назад

      That's what I tend to think is most likely and what I've observed as well. The auctioneer for whatever reason seemed to think it might be the relator or their friends which was interesting, so obviously they were in the house when nobody was but yes, I would agree that your comment above is most likely what happened. Bastards... Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    • @garth6994

      I agree... I once purchased a lot at auction and someone took the best book out of the lot when they were collecting their own auction lot. Luckily, like Phil, I'd kept the photos of my lot. I pointed out the missing book and they chased down the purchasers of the adjoining lots... for one of the purchasers to claim "oh... it must have gotten into my lot by mistake"... suuuuuuuure. Luckily I managed to recover the book, and thankfully the auction house was good enough to chase it for me.

    Great finds! I found a few safari press books at a book sale, all the scanners look passed them of course. Looking forward to that video on the auctions. Been thinking about trying it out. That’s unfortunate about the scumbag who took your books. Pretty sure I had someone steal a few of my items at an estate sale once. Can never trust the holding area, even if your bags are closed/sealed.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks man, I'm always baffled when I see quality looking books not even given a look over by someone scanning... you can potentially pick out one quality book from an estate allotment that'll surpass everything combined they put in their bag. That's not all of them of course but boy it's many. That's shitty thiugh, I've had that happen a couple times before at library sales in the past, I always bring two guys with me now at the estate sales and have never had another issue. Thanks for watching, keep up the good pickin!

    While I don't deal in the specialty or niche books so much like you do, I have been burned a few times buying online. Like you said, they should know better and they have now lost my business. Since I purchase/collect most older paperbacks, the thing I hate most is when they call the book Near Fine to Fine and then you receive the item and the pages are completely brown and brittle. Do they think if the covers and boards are okay that the pages don't matter? Great haul, and great video, Phil.

    Hi Phil - great video! I'm not a fan of hunting at all - killing animals for 'sport' is abhorrent to me. I DID enjoy your chat about auctions however - hearing your experiences was very interesting and informative. I've been watching your clips for a while now & am embarrassed to say that I've only just subscribed. Every video I watch though, I keep thinking "Damn... George Clooney has grown a beard & gone into the book business"! 😂 Keep up the great work and I hope your business goes well. I'm in Australia and I've been an online book-seller for many years & I also have a small publishing business. My father had a 2nd-hand bookstore for 15 years as well, so we've always been around books - collecting / buying / selling. Love the videos & I look forward to many more :)
