A few years ago, I felt like I was stuck in a rut, so I decided to follow in the footsteps of the great American philosopher, Morgan Spurlock, and try something new for 30 days. The idea is actually pretty simple. Think about something you’ve always wanted to add to your life and try it for the next 30 days. It turns out 30 days is just about the right amount of time to add a new habit or subtract a habit - like watching the news - from your life.
There’s a few things that I learned while doing these 30-day challenges. The first was, instead of the months flying by, forgotten, the time was much more memorable. This was part of a challenge I did to take a picture every day for a month. And I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing that day. I also noticed that as I started to do more and harder 30-day challenges, my self-confidence grew. I went from desk-dwelling computer nerd to the kind of guy who bikes to work. For fun! Even last year, I ended up hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. I would never have been that adventurous before I started my 30-day challenges.
I also figured out that if you really want something badly enough, you can do anything for 30 days. Have you ever wanted to write a novel? Every November, tens of thousands of people try to write their own 50,000-word novel, from scratch, in 30 days. It turns out, all you have to do is write 1,667 words a day for a month. So I did. By the way, the secret is not to go to sleep until you’ve written your words for the day. You might be sleep-deprived, but you’ll finish your novel. Now is my book the next great American novel? No. I wrote it in a month. It’s awful. But for the rest of my life, if I meet John Hodgman at a TED party, I don’t have to say, “I’m a computer scientist.” No, no, if I want to, I can say, “I’m a novelist.”
So here’s one last thing I’d like to mention. I learned that when I made small, sustainable changes, things I could keep doing, they were more likely to stick. There’s nothing wrong with big, crazy challenges. In fact, they’re a ton of fun. But they’re less likely to stick. When I gave up sugar for 30 days, day 31 looked like this.
So here’s my question to you: What are you waiting for? I guarantee you the next 30 days are going to pass whether you like it or not, so why not think about something you have always wanted to try and give it a shot! For the next 30 days.

It is true that this talk is concise and energetic for listeners to start the first 30-day trial, but there is less support and deep explanation inside. This talk cannot persuade people to “sustainable” keep doing one thing for 30-days, so I think it is hardly could be regarded as a high-quality TED talk.

Can't agree more. I learned deep thinking from reading in exactly the same way, which has since opened me to more possibilities. Now it's time to repeat the same method, focus on one thing that I really feel like doing for 30 days, for I don't want myself to be ridden by the anxiety of not achieving something great enough.

Yesterday I took my very important exam. For English gifted-student, actually. And they took this audio into listening test. Personally I have watched several videos of TEDxtalks on RUclips, but not this one. Overall, I did it okay, every blank was filled ... until I realised having make some silly mistakes ... Anyway, hopefully the other parts could help me pass it with flying colours. The thing is, I'll have my results today.

I watched Matt Cutt's performance and I know what his main idea is. The young man suggests trying to do something for 30 days. For example, ride a bike to work every day, or walk 10,000 steps every day, or something else. As I understand it, this young man even offers to write a novel in a month. It is interesting.

First of all, I like the idea of doing something new. For example, to give up bad habits, such as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle.

Planning to do something for 30days, it's a really hard thing. The first day it might be alright. But the second day your mind starts to be lazy. Actually I made several attempts of 30-day challenges before. It always turned out to be a 3-day challenge. I wish my mind gets bit more busier after watching this .

It's so difficult to change your life when you stuck in a rut of daily routine. You can start your 30-days marathon but already on the second day it would be so hard to stick to your goal. Your body and your minds would tell you: "It's just waste of time, you will never acheive the goal, let's go to watch a new movie on a TV".

I totally agree that sustainable small changes could lead to big changes and small changes bring tons of fun
Planning to do something for 30 days is really a difficult thing. On the first day, everything can be in order. But on the second day, your mind begins to be lazy. In fact, I have made several attempts at the 30-day trial before. This has always been a three day trial. I would like my mind to become more busy after watching this.
Don't think of it as having to do it for thirty days. That's not the point. It's not supposed to be a schedule, at one time, every single day for thirty days. It's for you to consider going, what if I try this? What if I did this? Start off small like he said. Maybe ride your bike or read your book for thirty minutes every day, and slowly create bigger pieces of that.

Seeing this video for the first time and I see 555 comments. Claiming 555, come what may. lol Funny enough, i dont think I've ever done anything new for 30 days straight. I've picked up snowboarding, and have been on the snow for 40 days in a year and a half time span. In the past to get 40 days on snow, most people take like 5 years to do so. I've picked up journaling, but I don't do it every day. I've picked up a lot of things, stretching, adventuring alone, now it's making me think what's something I want that I haven't done yet?
