  • This drawbridge only features 2 WRRS motor bells for some reason; one on each side of the bridge. The others in downtown feature 4 bells. Still a nice setup here with a Sentry F2 siren on the tower. I was surprised they only do 2 short growls. I swear I remember hearing them go for a good 5 seconds before.

In our city, we have a 4 laned raisable bridge like this, but, in my 70 years, I have NEVER witnessed it opening nor closing. This is the FIRST time I have EVER seen the operation of one of these type bridges! THANK YOU !!!

I was delighted to find this video, and you remember correctly. I lived in Joliet as a kid for 3 years beginning in the fall of 1968. I sat on my bike many a time at this bridge, and the sirens at this and the other downtown bridges sounded for at least 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure that back in that day the bridges had either Federal model A, D, or model L sirens mounted below the windowed portion of the tower, angled downward to prevent precipitation entry. I can still hear those sirens in my head.

These bridges had black and white diagonal stripes on the counterweight s years ago. The gates were b/w too. The warning lights were very different and the bridges were painted an ominous black.

The drawbridge near me is on the interstate so it has at least half a dozen sirens and signs all over the place that give drivers a heads up before they even start going to yellow lights on the traffic lights.
    Pretty interesting setup here!

There is a drawbridge in Portland Oregon,The Broadway Bridge spanning across the Willamette River which has the same design. Connecting the NW side of the river in the Pearl District, to the NE Side Lloyd District. Also the Portland Street Car runs along the Broadway Bridge traveling along NE MLK and SE Grand on the return trip

In Florida the bridge tender must first make an announcement about the bridge preparing to go up. Each drawbridge is equipped with outdoor speakers. This is to alert pedestrians. Second he/she must exit the bridgehouse and visibly inspect the bridge to be sure it is clear of vehicles and pedestrians. This was mandated after several pedestrians were killed while crossing the bridge.

In some areas where bridges open primarily for pleasure boats, the openings are scheduled. This is the case with the Black River bridges in Port Huron and the Grand River U.S. 31 bridge in Grand Haven, both in Michigan. These open hourly during boating season, such as on the hour.

I grew up in Joliet illinois and would get stuck by these bridges all the time at least 2 to 3 times a day…. The bridge I was intrigued by the most was the swing bridge that was down by the district 5 state police station on division st. But after being hit so many times by barges the just took it out….cool video thou

The big white box near the top is the counterweight. It's mostly concrete, with a honeycomb area where they can add steel plates to increase counterweight for balance. Any time they change something (paint, sidewalks, etc.) they rebalance the leaf.
