Ok
The Dutch are very patient people
You don't really have a choice at a draw bridge do you?
Like other countries would always casually drive thru barriers.
Sailed by this bridge a couple of years ago, it looked weird and I didn't understand it until I saw it operate - thought about it and figured what an excellent and elegant piece of design.
You're full of CRAP!
I think what happened here is that the Netherlands have always been a great place for civil engineers to find work, which meant many of the most ambitious civil engineers moved there, and then after centuries of competition and one-upmanship, it’s gradually been transformed into a civil engineering fairytale wonderland.
The Netherlands, and especially the western part of the country have always been fighting the water, that has created an enginering tradition...
Wonderful
Plus they're all potheads so they come up with crazy designs like this lol
@@rientsdijkstra4266 which is because the netherlands has always been more accepting to faiths and religions. Immigration caused this
@@rockydubois1052 that's what you like to think maybe, but its not true at all.
numbers show that we don't even consume more cannabis then Germany, and nowhere near as much as the French and those weirdos in the US, etc.
That must be one hell of a counterweight!

As someone regularily renting sail yachts in the Netherlands I highly appreciate those bridges getting out of way almost everywhere. And I do really like it, how they aim for variety and style in their solutions. There is no modern "the Dutch bridge 08/15 style" blueprint used and only very old small bridges tend to be similar and plain simple. So my respect and admiration go to our neighbours for going the extra mile on beautiful technical solutions.
It's UGLY!!
We have a little problem, how we solve it?
Dutch Engineers: In the most hardest way...
Polybridge players be like:
But its just a giant hinge.
And expensive. But man does it look cool.
American engineers: As cheaply and unattractively as possible because nobody here wants to pay taxes to fund anything
Ugly slow thing...
I ate my lunch watching this.. The y need a hotdog stand and a coffee house at that location..
Surely
Depends on how often it gets raised. If once or 2x a day then not worth it.
@@drewt.4353 I heard it only gets raised the first Tuesday in June.

@@youregay- happily not.
The engineering that went into making that bridge open and close like that is amazing. Why aren't there more like that
Because it takes eons to operate!
Its slow, its expensive, its heavy. Its amazing tho
Space needed
Because it’s too slow
Wow seriously?
That has to be the most unusual bridge I've ever seen, quite amazing.
Dutch engineering is out of this world.
Amazing bridge.
Who else come from Real Civil Engineer?
I thought I was the only one lmao
Atleast it has a self cleaning road.
wdym?
The engineer behind the design was at his desk resting his head against his arm. Suddenly he had a muscle cramp and started curling his arm up and down and thought...
someone from outa town would loos their minds seeing a chunk of road up like that
lol
True!
Well most people traveling will have an idea I mean unless you're on the run. Lol settle down now
I just saw a video about flying cars--now I know why we need 'em.
Dutch bridge: opens
10 million people: hmm interesting
Hey that's actually a interesting bridge design, don't you think? I've never seen anything like it before.
@@rixille go to the netherlands.
Some of us came from "a real civil engineer."
Save yourself some time and speed the video up to 2x
Finally found it! I didn't know how to spell it. I came from "a civil engineer's" polybridge video called "dutch bridges" or something like that.
Leave it up to the Dutch to be innovators of modern technology. Not only is the bridge purposeful. . . it's aesthetically pleasing to watch while in operation.
Great to see the sailboats coming through. Everybody wins! I love it.
Darryl
That is a very interesting bridge. WOW!
I remember when I saw this for the first time I was scared to be closer 😁
Chicken
I feel like the Dutch are just showing off now
I would love to see the MASSIVE foundation required for this bridge to keep the wind from knocking it out of position when it is up. Holy Cow, putting that deck broadside to a 70mph wind that is a LOT of force!!!!
It is functionally self-limiting. When the winds are high nobody's out sailing or trying to move Freight down a canal.
If this was Canada the road would have pot holes!
@@borealjwff Netherlands are so poor, they can't even afford some decent pot holes!

Wish we had "bike lanes" like that in the USA, protected from the highway with a barrier. They are all over the Dutch countryside.
The UK could do with them as well!
I have visited both but was astonished people couldn't use their bikes doing daily needs in the US while it seemed lifestyle in the Dutch
They would be nice in Canada too but our winters are far to brutal and they cost as much money as a real road.
They are not "all over the countryside" .Just because you've seen them once doesn't mean you know all of this country.
Ron D'Eau Claire we've not had paved highways many years, and electricity and cell phones and riding lawnmower and microwaves!
I wonder if crazy teenagers have ever tried hanging on when the bridge goes up? Because crazy teenagers you know.
Who me? I was never a crazy teenager!!! It does look mighty tempting!!!
I don't know about this particular bridge, but I grew up near a drawbridge across the entrance to the local harbour. During summer it was a popular pastime to jump from the closed bridge. And with the bridge keeper being positioned on the side of the bridge's hinges, there'd regularly be people hanging from the rising end of the bridge. You'd of course have to time your release right; too early and you'd hit the abutment on the near side, too late and you'd hit the abutment or hydraulic cylinder at the other side. And you'd have to watch out for boats crossing under the bridge. Needless to say all this was illegal, but like you said, teenagers ;)
those gosh darn teens!!
@@cookiehustle Teens gonna teen. Back then most - if not all - of us were immortal and God's gift to mankind concerning everything we thought we were good at ;)
Reporter - what kind of space age design bridges do you like?
Dutch Engineer - yes.
amazing this mobile bridge
wow that bridge is massive!
There is a waterway through Holland, from the German border to Amsterdam, that can be used by sailboats with their masts up, called the staande mastrout. All bridges will open up in some form or another, even railroad and highway bridges. It is magic and really worth the journey.
Markus, why do they make it like that? Why not just build a higher bridge so the boats can sail and people travel uninterrupted??
@@franklopez557 Boat masts are very tall and the canals not always that wide, i don't think cars could drive up that steep very easily and especially trucks won't.
Beautiful work of art, congratulations!
I love Dutch bridges
This is absolutely amazing how I wish I can reach there and make a short documentary about the bridge
It’s like the rear end of the Titanic
Well, that was certainly very interesting. Now, lets never take this route again because that took forever.
Great one. Watching from Lagos Nigeria
I'm loving it
Thank you Bosss
It's a cool bridge when you watch at 2x speed, it would be very annoying to be stuck behind it when you are going somewhere. We have several draw bridges in seattle that are maybe just a little faster and they are always so annoying to get stuck behind. At least this one looks cool, they just need to crank up the speed dial a bit...
keşke köprünün açılım hızınıda 2x yapsalardı. yoksa birinin boku gelse bekle bekle altına sıçar:)
That’s one amazing drawbridge that raises part of the road upward so the boats can pass through with exceptional clearance WOW!!!

Imagine being late for work and having to explain to your boss you were held up by a picturesquely slow draw bridge and a sailboat.
It happens when there are a lot of boats lined up. Kids get late for school and adults late for work or appointments but there is an understanding here for it, so no big deal. It's not a fairy tale excuse like the dog ate my agenda and I forgot about my duties for the day.
Pretty much the standard excuse when you're late for anything here is "The bridge was open". When I still lived in Akkrum, during boating season the bridge to the harbour seemed to be open more often than not. Also sailing around Friesland is great and if you have never done it, you should.
agree, you better explain to your boss why you are unable to plan in delays... if they would already even care being 10 mins later.
So cool!!!
Beautiful bridge
Coolest lift bridge ever!

Nothing like Dutch innovation.
Wow!so amazing.
Really amazing
Dutch engineers crazy bridge that costs millions!
For boats that have engines on sail boats....
Maybe they could make the masts foldable....
There are two kinds of sailing boats: one with the foldable mast and one without it 😂
That's what I was thinking when I saw the boats 🚢.
Its a good combination. The slow sail boats give the bridge time to raise.
After spending a few hours at an Amsterdam "☕ house."

wow.......what is Amazing engineer designer for future !!!!!!!! Smart stuffs coming up!!!!!!!
I celebrated another birthday watching this!
Very special canty lever bridge.

Great engineering, but I think skyway of high elevation is more efficient.
Not here, bc ships with masts over 12m need to be able to pass it.
How efficient is this compared to other traditional drawbridges? And how fast is this compared to others? Finally, how safe is this over time? I like the idea and outside the box thinking, for sure. But usually there’s a reason why an interesting design isn’t replicated.
Must be expensive too
I always find it funny that the Dutch use the same (or very close to) design for road signals and rail signals (semaphores) the white outline gives that look. I bet it costs less.
Imagine, if it malfunctions and flings cars and people like pancakes.
There's no one in it
@@tomvan8117 while they're crossing the bridge
cars fly like a catapult
It’s such a shame that in our country, something like this would be seen as an utter waste of money, because all that people care about it practically and functionality. The idea of art has gone out the window and the best of our art is worse than the worst of European art. The Europeans still respect that construction and architecture can still be an art. UK and US, don’t give a blinker as long as it works. Oh and both the UK and US suffer from increasing violence and unrest. I’ll always be jealous of Europe for the respect they show for artistic and creative minds.
Amazing!👍
And then one day the robot bridge just started smashing everyone. That's how it all started. This is my story.
For all of you who think this bridge is toooo slow...think of all the great plans and ideas that we dutch can make whilst waiting...and it is relaxing aswell!
RON KALKHOVEN false; American bridge openings are at a 6 minute opening time frame. Second, read my other post on this to see why the construction and operation of this bridge is so flawed
RON KALKHOVEN that's not slow
What are those plans, dude? Except picking your nose!
Bill Brasky : You can spend millions to build a "fast bridge", then millions more to operate and maintain it. You are a taxpayer, right? I hope you are not a taxing-paying Dutch, as I could only count four leisure crafts going pass the crossing in the clip.
RON KALKHOVEN : Yeah, why the rush, huh ! Cheers and, yes, relax !
the design concept is simple and effective..i like it

Craziest thing I have ever seen... crazy as in how did they ever come up with that idea, it's very cool... I wonder if it really was the most practical way of doing that... its there now thought... pretty nice.
Probably it was the indeed the most practical in this situation. And it is fun too.
