The really fun part of this is that the government demands the old, romantic, nostalgic and scenic roads to be upheld so people can choose if they want to go fast, or enjoy the scenery and culture along the coast.
Thank god for this. The majority of the "tourist" roads are in great shape. You dont have to go near a major route if you dont want to. Though sometimes there is only on option, but you still have the scenery most of the time anyway.

Many years ago, I rented a car and drove it from Oslo to Trondheim, I wanted to see what Norway was like after skiing at Oslo, and I did! I'd love to drive their new super Coastal Highway but probably never will. What a beautiful country Norway is, and the people are just as beautiful as their country! The great thing about this project is that you don’t need to complete all the stages for it to greatly improve the E39. There will continue to be a ferry across Sognefjorden for a long time, but that doesn’t mean that most of the other crossings can’t get a fixed link. That said, it will be decades until the link from Stavanger to Bergen is finished, and that has the highest priority.
Personally I would feel anxious driving long distances in underwater tubes.

As most of the people outside of the main town are old, the town is growing fast, the rest of the island is stagnant, one of my friends internet providers (Telenor) cut their internet, and they have to travel to their house that’s actually designated for tourists to get internet. Where I'm at, our former Mayor's neglected (some extreme, some minimal) our roads for the past 50 years. Our current Mayor, and God Bless her for this, has put an emphasis on our city roads, trying to make up for that. There's less to distract you while in a tube than there is on the open road, so less chance of crashing. They're also obviously going to make it water tight in the parts exposed to water, so you won't drown. It's deep under stone, which has been pressed solid by the pressure at that depth, and the tectonics that created those ridges in the first place, so the rock won't give way and collapse. Many people point out that investing 47 Billion $ in Highways is a waste of money esp. for a country with merely 5.3 million inhabitants and only medium to small sized cities (small population density) . I would like to offer another view on the subject:
1) Norway is self reliant on funding these projects (no foreign loans, no debt money) - Thanks to Oil
2) They surely know that eventually their oil will run out in the future. So they are investing in a way that could benefit their economy by diversifying their resources and strengthening the connections of their major cities.- Trade and Commerce Needs Roads.
3) Because of Climate Change and Sea Ice Melting, the Arctic Sea Route Between Asia and Europe will increasingly be more accessible to Navigation and Shipping. So Norway's strategic location may play a crucial role in the not so distant future. By Having a Good and Modern Highway System accessing all Major Ports and facilities (Industry, Logistics, Fishing, Shipbuilding, Agriculture etc.) is vital for their Future.
4) Norway is Blessed by its Geographic location: Having no economic or military rivals neighboring only friendly countries like Sweden and Finland (and a very small border with not so friendly Russia way up north). It has a Huge Exclusive Economic Zone: The Norwegian Sea, Rich in Fisheries and oil and gas. So the Highway infrastructure is a Vital artery not only for them but neighboring countries and Western Europe as well.
So in Conclusion : Well Done Norway ! Wishing you success in these projects!
Love and Respect for your Beautiful Country from Greece !!
It's not that expensive really, just 10.000$ per Norwegian citizen. Basically everyone works for half a year for the government and we are done.

Wait, Russians IS friendly! We Norwegians doesn't have the same point of view as the Americans when it comes to Russia.
Tja... Det er vel litt delte meninger om akkurat det...
MeqanichHD well, we have no problems with Russians, but Russia as a country is another story. It's not too long ago since they told us they might have to point their nuclear warheads towards us. Hardly a friendly thing to say.
I witnessed the start of this in Stavanger in September 2019. We also drove along the 5.5 km Hundvåg Tunnel, an engineering feat on its own.
Amazing. Thank you
Been there last year and drove North from Kristiansand to Bergen along the shoreline and on to Trondheim through the Eastern mountains. It was a stunning experience and of course especially as a tourist, the bridges and ferries are the most memorable experience. I was amazed by the efficiency of the ferries and they are a nice break after you have been driving for some time, letting you focus even more on the lovely landscapes as opposed to sitting in the car whilst still moving.
For tourists the tunnels are of course not the best experience, since you miss out on quite a bit of landscape on lands while already in the tunnel and despite many EVs there (driving one myself) the air is quite bad because of the steepness and therefore lots of exhaust gasses. Also for the most of the tunnels, there understandably is no more ferry service alongside.
For the amount of people living there, especially north of Bergen, you certainly could argue if all that crazyness is really necessary. I mean in Trondheim they are even struggling to keep a regular tram line up and running because of too little usage.

They have just opened some of the first tunnels and they are sooo cool. In the middle of the tunnel they built this giant opening with cool lights that made the whole space look like we were driving through an ice cave.
It isn’t a part of the rogfast project, Ryfast is only connecting Ryfylke to Stavanger.
It's like just not even $10k per citizen. Take into consideration the huge time savings. Also this motorway covers like 80% of the population when it's done.
@2:05mins As a layperson, I really appreciate the graphics and animation like this. Helps me to visualize and appreciate the magnitude of such a mega project better

They’re gonna look silly when they’re finally done in 2079 and teleportation is a thing
Pretty sure if teleportation existed then we would melt when going through; great comment though.

Imagine breaking down in that tunnel
Imagine needing to pee and being stuck in that long ass tunnel without any stops.
very long tunnels typically have places to pull over, id assume this tunnel would be the same but who knows.
The design at 2:20 does include emergency lay-by sections which have elevators to the surface.

maybe iit's time for them to leave australia and go back home? Thier parents and grandparents stole millions of hectares of land from the indigenous peoples of Australia and continue to keep them, its horrid.
I was in Norway a few months ago and I went through countless tunnels. I must say the engineering that they created it's incredible!
They're simply the king of tunnel makers
mi3rebus+ The Norwegians have had a lot of practise at building tunnels so it is no surprise that they have become exceptionally good at it. It is also a spectacularly beautiful country and was very friendly when I visited.
Check out the Lærdal Tunnel (Laerdal), one of, if not the longest, tunnels in the world. Really impressive
@@yvindlorentsen7048 I've gone through laerdal tunnel and took photos inside. It's amazing!
We in norway have an joke about this: Discover Norway, underground
You haven't seen eanything compared to all the hydropwer tunnels, hole mountains are almost completely caved out by tunnelsystems longer than the Lærdal tunnel
I am currently on a project where we are building 8 mountain halls that are gonna be 200m long 25m wide and 65m tall,
Mega Project! Great Engineers 👌 intelligent people!!

Back in 1970's: We are going to have flying cars by 2020!
2020: *floating tunnels*
Much better if it happens
lol!
Lol
Find some old copies of Popular Science/Popular Mechanics magazines in the 1950's and read about the predictions of flying cars to be everywhere by 1970. Some engineers live in a perpetual dream world. Just remember that most cars today still run on the basic principles of the internal combustion engine, even after 100+ years.
And how would they line mark (pinstripe) the traveling lanes? just imagine the mayhem in the air. If I can not pass(overtake) you on the left or right I'll do it below or above
$47B seems a reasonable price tag. For 25 years here in New South Wales we've been building a 800km upgrade to dual carriageway which to date has cost $16B AUD with a "few billion" to go by 2020 (Pacific Highway Upgrade). Our geology is mountainous with many river crossings but nothing compared to this project. Also our cost to date is historical and does not include inflation. This Norwegian project is current and future cost, and likely to exceed the current estimate.
The return on investment would be considerable, 21 hours down to (in my estimate) 8-10 hours depending on the speed limit. This would attract secondary investment in the towns and cities and attract more people to live in this country. Norway's economy will boom.
Tepid Tuna Spot on .

47 Billion? The Australian government can't even build a roundabout for 100 Billion, thats how utterly useless they are
And those 47 Bn aren't even that much to norway because they rich af.
You wait until we get that SYD-MEL High Speed Train!
We can't even build a relatively moderate speed train line in Florida.
They're building a bypass freeway thing just north of Adelaide , taken over 3yrs so far and still not finished, not even 5 miles long , the thing will be outdated and blow out price before it's done, also disrupting traffic flow from the North, East and South... Well done guys !
Same in canada. We cant build a extra lane for that much. These countries are clearly ahead of us even if forbs or the UN disagrees

I'm affraid how much it will cost to maintain this beast of a tunnelway system
That's what I was thinking. Upkeep on tunnels and bridges is very costly.
It’s not like Norway is strapped with cash 😂
It would provide jobs which would boost the economy. I can imagine at those ‘exit stops’ they would also use that as entry for maintainability and cleaning
