Thanks you so much for the video! Mechanics put the wrong size belt on mine so now I'm going to replace with OEM part myself to stop it from squealing at start ups. Bob Blarney's comment has a great tip of not using a pry bar, but rather, use the provided 1/2" square hole pointed to the left/ passenger side at the top of power steering pump and use a breaker bar or ratchet to tension the belt. Much better leverage and no denting scratching surrounding parts!

Thank you Bob for the wonderful tip! Went to my car and found the square hole you mentioned. Will make this a one person job whole lot easier without denting anything!
How can you determine the correct tension for the belts? Would a torque wrench help? I'm afraid without experience I would leave it too tight or too loose and either burn the alternator or the belts would wear out too fast.
In this case it's simply tightening the power steering back into place, basically you don't directly tighten or loosen the belt, you just tighten the other component into place and it's already in the right position for ideal tension.
Great detail, informative, and extremely helpful. Yes your efforts were helpful. I need to change the serpentine (all the belts) belt on a 1999 Honda Accord LX. Thanks. 👍🏻😎🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸
Hey I had question I got the new alternator on but now the adjustment bolt tensioner won't screw into the hole and I sure I had it same way before I removed it now it won't go in, the whole not stripped because I tried smaller bolt and it went in
If you have AC for your car, there will be an extra pulley so the belt will need to be longer, if you don’t have AC, then your vehicle don’t have the compressor AC pulley for the belt, so it’ll be shorter. Hope that helps.
Outstanding video! Just saved $$$ changing both belts myself on my daughter's 98 Accord LX. Kudos to the comment about using a 3/8" breaker bar to pull slack from P/S pump belt! THANK YOU!
This video seems very well done, I had both belts break entirely on my 1991 Accord LX, and I'm assuming the engines are similar just based on where the pulleys sit. Is there any huge difference between the 1991 and this model?
Excellent dude !!! Exactly what I was looking for !! Thank you. Nice video. All this time I thought my Honda had one belt. I see that it has two now. But I have never had the belts changed. So the other day I sprayed "belt conditioner" on them and now my belts make this strange noise. I read that the belt conditioner can also mess it up too. I should've left well enough alone. My car stood in parking for about 7 months. Now Once I tried to start engine I heard huge noise from this belt. I immediately turned off engine to avoid any damage. Seems like pulleys r rusty. Any solution, begore going to a mechanic?
if you can't snake the drive belt onto the pulley alone, it helps to have someone below guide it in so you don't mess up. :) yes we did have a helper lol.
Changed my Alternator belt, no more squeak on cold start. My issue though is after putting the power steering belt back on it's insanely difficult to turn the steering wheel. Maybe my belt is too tight or too loose? Think I'll have to take it to the mechanic tomorrow, at least the alternator squeal seems fixed.
@@NutzAboutBolts Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try that. It's really tight already it seems but maybe I just gotta throw more elbow grease in there. For example I can put my thumb to the power steering belt and the tension is loose. I can push my thumb into the power steering belt I mean. So i'll try tightening.
@@NutzAboutBolts Yeah. Power steering was perfect before I did the job. I just took out the power steering belt like shown in the vid, because my Alternator belt needed replacing due to squealing on startup. After putting the power steering belt back on, the belt's chirping, as well as my power steering is insanely tight. When I turn the steering wheel in park for example the pulley seizes & stops spinning.
The belts popped off my car while I was driving and they did have some cracking, so I decided to replace them myself and after I followed through then I turned the car on and they popped out as soon as I did...do you know if it might be the timing belt that needs fixing or could have it been that I might put them on wrong?? ( I did check that they weren't loose so when they popped off I was confused )
So I reinstalled a new belt on my honda about 4 months ago it squeals in the morning, as well in the cold or sometimes when vehicle is in idle could the new belt be bad or alternator?
If you have a roadside assistance service, they can usually go to your home and rest your alternator. I'd also recommend searching this in regards to Scotty Kilmer, in the RUclips search bar.
Did you remove you front tire to do this? I noticed you reach down when putting the belt back on. You can just turn the belt sideways and it will go around the harmonic balancer. Great video. Thanks!
Yeah, I went outside right after watching your video and did the job. It's a little tricky, but with a little twisting and turning I got the belts on. I just thought I'd mention. there is a 1/2 in insertion hole on the top of the Power steering pump to fit a breaker bar for tensioning and I thought I could use my 1/2 in. Craftsman ratchet (don't have a breaker bar), but the head was too big to get in there. I suppose with a short extension I could have used it, but didn't have one, so I used your method and pried it to get tension. Anyway, thanks again.
Good morning I have a problem with my honda civic 2005 I feel bust the alternator belt, it is changed but the car starts and goes off 3 seconds, if the crankshaft sensor disconnection the car starts well but does not exceed 4 thousand Revolutions
