I had 2 bouts of Melanoma and now have 2 scars on the upper part of my left arm from where I had my surgeries. I was also fortunate that it was caught early both times, and now I have to go in every 6 months for full body skin checks. (My first surgery I had done at a hospital, and the second one I had performed at my Dermatologist's office). I am not afraid to share my journey nor am I afraid to show my scars!

I know it couldn’t be easy for you to share your story. I am proud of you for sharing and bring awareness to us gardeners. Melanoma runs in my family as we are all pale Irish with millions of freckles. I had two bouts of carcinoma within the last year and now I am even more cautious than I was before. I recently had a melanoma mole removed from my right arm near the outside elbow. They took a pretty good chunk out but they got it all, thank goodness. I didn't count the stitches I had, but it will leave about a 4-inch scar. I had a squamous mole and a basal cell mole removed previously. Now I'm going to the dermatologist every 3 months. Yes I’m in the 3 month club now too. They said after a certain amount of time being in the all clear that I can go back to once a year if I choose but considering how fast the last melanoma came up I don’t think I’ll ever go back to once a year. Probably do every 6 months. I’m glad they were able to get all of yours!

Thanks for sharing your melanoma journey . . . so glad that everything went ok.
Given that melanoma is often found on body parts that usually don't see the sun - eg, in between our toes - what causes skin cancer in these instances since it's obviously not the sun / UV rays?
I’m not an expert but according to what my doctor told me is that when we go out in the sun our skin produces melanin which is what causes us to tan. It’s a natural protection from the sun. When melanin grows in clusters it causes moles. The cells can mutate and cause cancer. The UV rays from the sun causes an increased risk of developing skin cancer. But in the other places that don’t see the sun it is still possible to develop skin cancer, just less likely. I was reading somewhere that UV rays can increase your chance of melanoma by 86%! So even though our skin is able to tan and protect us from getting burnt, the UV rays can still be damaging our skin. Hope that makes sense!

So sorry you father died too early. Glad you received treatment. However, read the new research on the dangers of sunscreens -- some studies say the culprit is the actual sunscreen with a certain chemical.

I think Bob Marley got cancer on his foot and refused treatment and then died from it.
