It was weird before cause it was basically units would just spontaneously gain assault after moving and going into shooting phase. You sort of had to plan a tiny bit ahead that your advances would work or not but make sure your guiding units weren't moving fast unless they had a gun drone. This stream lines it and make the detachment be both more flexible, but also more restrictive since you must guide to benefit the lethals.

They cut some Tau characters and replaced them with new kroot stuff. Then they removed popular forge world stuff for what reason? Also if you have Lethal hits and Deviating wounds do they still activate? Seen that go both ways.
Devastating Wounds gets skipped on the crit rolls that triggered Lethal Hits because they don't roll to wound. I don't remember the exact math, but I think it's a worse combination than just Dev Wounds against low toughness high save units.
@ryanwaits6733 they didn't though. Puretide Program was calling it the best detachment in the book based solely on the in book points costs, and most every competitive Tau player agrees 75pts for 10 OC2 sticky objective kroot bodies is excellent.
honestly because of the wording in codex this feels more like they are correcting a typo for the mont'ka detachment. sucks that the barracuda and riptide variants are gone too, would've also liked some new characters to replace the ones we lost, overall I think the rules themselves are fine.
Auspex I love your videos and watch every single one of them. People hopeful for a strong kroot detachment, please check out other RUclipsrs on the subject. Literally every top tier tau player says 75pt carnivores are excellent. At least one of the best tau players in the world says the Hunting Pack is bar none the strongest detachment in the book, and given he was consistently scoring 95-100 points in every test game he did using the points in the back of the codex it's hard to agree with auspex on the strength of those units.
One thing I have been having some success with is a kauyon stormsurge with darkstrider+pathfinder for guiding. Since you can change your spotted target once during your turn, you can shoot the scary rail gun and destroyer missiles at any armor and then swap your guiding to an infantry squad for your anti personnel weapons. Add in the enhancement for lethal hits on guiding and that is a lot of firepower.
That doesn't work. All attacks for a model are declared simultaneously. So you can swap guiding target in the middle of that model shooting. In Kauyon what works better is using the Stormsurge to guide for something smaller then using the strat to get the benefit of being guided against your observed unit. You can then split fire without penalty after that but won't have the benefit of being guided against the split unit. Hope that helps.
@daviddussiaume8512 that rule could be written more clearly. As I read it, you can swap which unit is spotted but not the guided? FTGG is a really confusing rule at times. Especially for people like me who are new to the faction. That, and I just want the stormsurge to be good. It looks so cool but needs FTGG to get the most out of its big guns, and then cannot split fire as 5 ups with my luck to hit results in 3 hits with all of the anti personnel weapons...
@stotgunvsface5092 I'm not entirely sure how you're getting that interpretation, but the whole point of it is that 2 of your units work as a pair to target one enemy unit. You can't swap what your observer unit is spotting in the middle of shooting. As the other comment said, coorfinate to engage is a better way to still boost the stormsurge without any significant penalty, especially since most of its guns have the heavy keyword, so it's even better if you sit still.
@@quingo1139 I can see where I went wrong on it. I’ve only played 2 games with tau and only started playing 40K 2 months ago. Even still. Darkstrider with pathfinders still seems like a good guiding unit. Lethal with the enhancement and sustained 2 on round 3 up still feels like a worthwhile unit to have. The rail rifles have a good range and having 2 observations for broadsides and some other heavy tau guns. It may not have the rerolls or cost of the stealth suits, but there are some benefits.
As someone who has a lot of experience playing Space Marines with the Firestorm Assault Force Detachment, I actually rather like the change. For one, it gives your spotter units more freedom to move, be able to spot and keep away from enemy fire and charges. It also allows Devilfish to advance and still fire their Seeker Missiles after dropping off a Breacher Team and spotting for them.
