Marc Quiones, Bill Payne, Ed Toth, John Cowan, and Marc Russo make for an excellent band with the guys. Vote them into the RnR Hall for 2020.
I suspect he would grimace at that bold proclamation. Firstly its an art, not the super bowl with a point spread. Secondly he would likely agree he would nit be in the top 50 most acclaimed- by fellow musicians. Love his playing w the Dbs and Dan. But really now… RIP Bump. Beautiful player
Sigh! Gone are the days of my youth. I will always be at heart an original line up of the Doobie Brothers fan - Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, John Hartman, Tiran Porter (ok, second album), and Michael Hossack (again, second album). However, I appreciated the various incarnations and talent weaved into the tapestry known collectively as the Doobie Brothers over the years, as each member has brought their unique talent & sound into the mix.
Skunk was with TDB from The Captain And Me Through Minute By Minute, officially joining the band during Stampede. He now is a long time and high paid missile defense specialist for The Pentagon.

Same here. The Doobie Brothers Rule! In 2000 Tiran Porter taught me how to play the intro of Another Park, Another Sunday. True story! I already knew parts of the song so Tiran helped me fill in the blanks. Awesome experience to say the least.
Just found out that Chet McCracken passed away last week. The man was an amazing musician. He co-wrote The Doobie Brothers song 'South Bay Strut', which appeared in the band's 'One Step Closer' album. He along with the late Bobby Lakind, Cornelius Bumpus, Keith Knudsen, Michael 'Big Mike' Hossack will be missed.

Thanks I did not think I would ever get to see this I was working on that might back in 81 .I think this was the best vocal touring version of the band they were able to really really those High Harmonies .I saw TheDoobies many Times but only Twice with Willie Weeks on Bass and both times Willie Weeks just quit playing and walked off stage

I love MM....Minute By Minute, Taken It To The Streets, Real Love, Here To Love You, Depending On You.... plus he's got some awesome solo stuff too like I Keep Forgeting ! I know one of their songs was in the movie Running Scared (billy crystal and Gregory Hines). There are so many songs through the years ...it's hard to name them all in one post as you know. I forgot how talented Cornelius Bumpus was. I kind of liked this configuration with John McFee and Chet Mckracken. I wish they did one more album with this configuration without Michael McDonald who was ready for a solo album.
When the band started the process of recording this record, they met with their producer Ted Templeman to inform him of their wishes on what would be “One Step Closer.” The band wanted each member to sing lead on a song on the record. Ted Templeman, informed them that wouldn’t be happening, and it was a big deal. The only reason that Cornelius Bumpus got to sing lead on the title track with Mike McDonald is because Ted grew up with Cornelius Bumpus, and they were old pals. Ted had a lot of respect for Cornelius, and wanted to showcase his talent, so he shared the lead on that tune. The band was super unselfish from everything I’ve ever heard, almost to a fault, especially by the time this record came out. They were all burnt out, and this record ended up being about as far from what the band started out as, as they could have got. Personally, I love the album. It’s well produced, and has some great songs on it. It would have been interesting to hear another Doobie’s record after this one in terms of how the technology of the time would have changed the Doobie’s sound, and what it would have morphed into from this.
I rarely watched the Tonight Show. Most of the time I would have been in bed by then. For whatever reason, my parents and I were watching that night. I remember One Step Closer like it was yesterday.
The Doobies regrouped in 1987 and haven’t looked back. They released 5 album recordings plus a box set. New music should be out later this year backing their postponed 50th anniversary tour. Michael will join Tom, Pat and John. Check out Cycles, Brotherhood, Sibling Rivalry, and World Gone Crazy. Southbound is a compilation of their hits with country singers on vocals.
From what I understand, Johnston "never-left-the-band" (ie, the "corporation" of The Dobbie Brothers) but was highly encouraged by his medical professionals to take a long time off, to heal from stresses, the pressures of touring and an ulcer, I believe. I sense he did the right thing, to care for himself and depart from recording & touring from aprrox 1978 to 1989, when he re-grouped himself in as an "active member" for the CYCLES album & tour. The way I heard it, he kept his stakes & shares in the band, but was just an "inactive member" for 11 years. As of the current, 2022, he has already been back for a long, long while already...and he, along with Patrick Simmons, are STILL the core of the original heart & soul of the great group, The Doobie Brothers. McFee & McDonald round up the four man group, today. BCRadio
For the last several tours the Doobs have had only one drummer, Ed Toth formerly with Vertical Horizon. Marc Quiones who is a former member with The Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman Band serves as percussionist with TDB. The Doobies are currently on tour promoting their 50th anniversary, postponed from 2021. MM is on the tour.
I saw this tour in November at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Louisiana's LeReaux opened. One Step Closer was a good album, but it didn't quite hit the success that Minute by Minute did. I feel that the public had had enough of Michael McDonald. He was featured in Kenny Loggins' This Is It and also on Christopher Cross's Ride Like the Wind.
I think it was more that the band was just tired and THEY felt that they were getting too far away from their original sound. Minute by Minute took a lot out of them. Michael knew what he wanted and was demanding, which is understandable. He was writing lots of great songs.

sounds good but hardly The Doobie Bros; I never accepted Michael McDonald replacing Tom Johnston who was the original front man singing the Rockin’ hits like China Grove & Long Train Running; I know they all reunited for a Doobies super review but go check out the original 5 piece from the early’70s (right here on RUclips!)
It's funny because I recently watched an interview and Tommy wasn't bitter, he was grateful in retrospect because it kept the band going with plenty of success while he healed up and then jumped back in. I love those first records wth TJ the best, the rocked hard.. saw them in 75' incredible band, still are

I am almost sure that was not the INFAMOUS Tiran Porter on bass guitar, but he did record on the "One Step Closer" album and participated in the Grammy's just one year prior and oddly, the stage position here on CARSON was the EXACT set-up as on The Grammys! Bumpus on the far, far left, drummers McCracken on the left, Knudsen on the right & percussionist LaKind in the middle, Simmons on the foreground left, McFee on the foreground right & McDonald on the far, far right. Porter was dead-smack-center-stage! But this fella here does not resemble Porter. Porter ALWAYS, from the beginning, to he very end of his tenure, had that signature beard & mustache with no side burns & usually wore a cool & funky looking cap; this fella was pretty clean cut and just didn't resemble Porter, or had that very unique "rolling & rumbling" bass moves & groves about him, although in this LIVE TV performance, he was totally in the pocket and had both songs totally down. During quick stage interview time, CLARK on BANDSTAND, always quickly went around the circle and had each member introduce themselves, but CARSON here on TONIGHT, only did a brief chat with Patrick. It’s Willie Weeks. Edit: McCracken died this year. Bobby LaKind in ‘92, Keith died in 2005, Cornelius died in 2004, original bassist Dave Shogren died in ‘99, drummer Mike Hossack died in 2012, and original drummer John Hartman died recently.

He passed away before they were inducted but if they were on stage instead of accepting the honor remotely I'm sure Cornelius would have been mentioned.
Ted Templeman, their producer, was a big fan of incorporating percussion into their sound. From “Takin’ It To The Streets” through “One Step Closer,” Ted really made an effort to make percussion a part of the Doobie’s sound. “One Step Closer” was sort of critically panned for the abundance of percussion on the record, and it’s by far and away the most dense record the Doobie’s ever did in terms of drum/percussion arrangements.
They'd had two drummers since the second album, Toulouse Street, with not quite the same personnel. And is Stephen Adams says, it's key to their sound.
And a percussionist. On this album (with McCracken) they both play rhythm but it seems previously Hartman played to the beat and Knudson (and Hossack before him) played more fills and shuffles like a true rock drummer. Not sure why. Edit: I have been told we refer to that as timing and color drummers.
For anyone who thinks lead guitar makes or break a band, just realize this band has 3 percussionists, 2 being full drum kits. Percussion makes or breaks every great band.

First saw the Doobies in 1973 at the University of Arkansas. Loved them ever since. I've seen them 5 times in 45 years.

There are live bands and studio bands and this group mastered both.
Saw them live in Vegas last year. Way tighter group now. Thankfully Tom Johnston recovered. The band wasn't complete without him.

For the last several tours the Doobs have had only one drummer, Ed Toth formerly with Vertical Horizon. Marc Quiones who is a former member with The Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman Band serves as percussionist with TDB.
The Doobies are currently on tour promoting their 50th anniversary, postponed from 2021. MM is on the tour.

I saw this tour in November at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Louisiana's LeReaux opened. One Step Closer was a good album, but it didn't quite hit the success that Minute by Minute did. I feel that the public had had enough of Michael McDonald. He was featured in Kenny Loggins' This Is It and also on Christopher Cross's Ride Like the Wind.

I think it was more that the band was just tired and THEY felt that they were getting too far away from their original sound. Minute by Minute took a lot out of them. Michael knew what he wanted and was demanding, which is understandable. He was writing lots of great songs.
@@Jpeterson7 Pat was ready for a break. He was the last original Doobie member. After he left the band quickly realized they could not legitimately call themselves TDB.

@@Jpeterson7 Plus, he took some flack for running Jeff "Skunk" Baxter off. Jeff got him into The Doobies after Tom Johnston took ill during the Stampede Tour.

2020 is The Doobie Brothers 50th anniversary. For the upcoming tour this summer Pat, Tom, John, and Michael will all together once again be The Doobie Brothers. Marc Quiones, Bill Payne, Ed Toth, John Cowan, and Marc Russo make for an excellent band with the guys. Vote them into the RnR Hall for 2020.

sounds good but hardly The Doobie Bros; I never accepted Michael McDonald replacing Tom Johnston who was the original front man singing the Rockin’ hits like China Grove & Long Train Running; I know they all reunited for a Doobies super review but go check out the original 5 piece from the early’70s (right here on RUclips!)

It's funny because I recently watched an interview and Tommy wasn't bitter, he was grateful in retrospect because it kept the band going with plenty of success while he healed up and then jumped back in. I love those first records wth TJ the best, the rocked hard.. saw them in 75' incredible band, still are

I am almost sure that was not the INFAMOUS Tiran Porter on bass guitar, but he did record on the "One Step Closer" album and participated in the Grammy's just one year prior and oddly, the stage position here on CARSON was the EXACT set-up as on The Grammys! Bumpus on the far, far left, drummers McCracken on the left, Knudsen on the right & percussionist LaKind in the middle, Simmons on the foreground left, McFee on the foreground right & McDonald on the far, far right. Porter was dead-smack-center-stage! But this fella here does not resemble Porter. Porter ALWAYS, from the beginning, to he very end of his tenure, had that signature beard & mustache with no side burns & usually wore a cool & funky looking cap; this fella was pretty clean cut and just didn't resemble Porter, or had that very unique "rolling & rumbling" bass moves & groves about him, although in this LIVE TV performance, he was totally in the pocket and had both songs totally down. During quick stage interview time, CLARK on BANDSTAND, always quickly went around the circle and had each member introduce themselves, but CARSON here on TONIGHT, only did a brief chat with Patrick. Any takers out there on who this bass player was?

Edit: McCracken died this year. Bobby LaKind in ‘92, Keith died in 2005, Cornelius died in 2004, original bassist Dave Shogren died in ‘99, drummer Mike Hossack died in 2012, and original drummer John Hartman died recently.
Johnny Carson was right, the Doobies would break up soon after this. For a bit.

Only for a few years. They have been back since 1989. Tom, Pat, and John McFee are driving the Long Train Running. Check the latest release Live At The Beacon Theatre featuring entire performances of Toulouse St and The Captain And Me. This band is today the best they’ve ever been. Tour is underway🎤🎸🎷🥁🎹

Iam hoping Corneilus Bumpers was inducted with them in the Rock hall of Fame, but, I didn't see him being inducted.
He passed away before they were inducted but if they were on stage instead of accepting the honor remotely I'm sure Cornelius would have been mentioned.
Why so much percussion?
Part of TDB signature sound especially on stage.
Ted Templeman, their producer, was a big fan of incorporating percussion into their sound. From “Takin’ It To The Streets” through “One Step Closer,” Ted really made an effort to make percussion a part of the Doobie’s sound. “One Step Closer” was sort of critically panned for the abundance of percussion on the record, and it’s by far and away the most dense record the Doobie’s ever did in terms of drum/percussion arrangements.
They'd had two drummers since the second album, Toulouse Street, with not quite the same personnel. And is Stephen Adams says, it's key to their sound.
Nowadays The Doobies use one drummer, Ed Toth. Mark Quiones serves as percussionist which complements Ed’s more than capable skills.

I love the Doobies...especially this period with Michael...but I will never understand the purpose of having 2 drummers.
And a percussionist. On this album (with McCracken) they both play rhythm but it seems previously Hartman played to the beat and Knudson (and Hossack before him) played more fills and shuffles like a true rock drummer. Not sure why.
Edit: I have been told we refer to that as timing and color drummers.
Michael McDonald is a good vocalist and good musician prefer the old, rock sound of the Doobies with Tom Johnston.
Tom is THE Doobie Brother.
John McFee the best...
For anyone who thinks lead guitar makes or break a band, just realize this band has 3 percussionists, 2 being full drum kits. Percussion makes or breaks every great band.
