  • Throwing out old tapes, thought someone might like to see this one. The Doobie Brothers on ABC's 20/20 in 1979, just after Michael McDonald joined the band. Good Times.
I own no copyrights, no $ here.

Ted Templeman was a genius . Very Underrated producer. He produced some Awesome albums I still listen to this day in 2024.

Those in-studio harmonies on "Real Love" were flawless.
Today's artists rely on tech to get perfect vocals on their records.

Me too, but I'm equally bullish on the Michael McDonald years. MM was more r&b influenced. Both Johnson and MM were crazy good. So, for me there's no either or.

Watching this in 2024 and I’m 65. I’ve never not known the Doobie brothers. I guess it’s my generation. My favorite is Michael McDonald. Anytime I hear his voice. I just get happy. He is such a talent. I love steely Dan I love Boz Scaggs I love.. What a talent he just added so much to everything he touched.

Hi, why don't I remember your name? In 79 I was broadcast producer and put the hour together in PP3 and put the show on the air live with Roger Goodman directing. The great logo seen here Roger and I had done. Maybe this was like 81? I left and Rifkinson was directing.

Hi Dan…. I was your PA for one of your first pieces on smoking! I remember you very well.It was 7/3/1980 the piece aired. You, Dennis Sullivan and someone else was the producers of the show. Correct? We did that shoot on top of the US postal building across the street from Madison Square Garden with a magician. I believe we also went to Lubbock Texas for that piece together @@dancooper

My #1 EVER American Band (I'm English) but as much as I admire and respect Michael McDonald, that was not The Doobies I was crazy about, Jesus is Just Alright / Long Train Running / Blackwater / Listen to the Music.... Never better than then!! But so also say they were unknown and most people knew their music??? Whhaaat?? What Planet are these people from! When I first heard Blackwater on the radio, I was like a bolt of lightning down to buy the Album asking for The Doobie Brothers!! Have every LP, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray ever released, and Long Train Running is in my top 5 songs of all time!!

No footage of Jeff Skunk Baxter , unfortunately- but very cool to see Ted Templeman : that mysterious, yet lucky charm of a name I used to ALWAYS see on nearly every Warner Bros album or cassette I would listen to. And to think , this was filmed at the time he was just starting with Van Halen 🎉🎉🎉

Personally I thought the first album was FANTASTIC! It might not have sold but it is a great combination of acoustic and electric guitar and vocals. By far my favorite band until McDonald. I give them credit for picking him and shooting to the top with him, but the music was really different. But I put on Toulouse Street or Stampede and I am treated to a wide variety of song style all done perfectly.
