Chevy's an amazing singer. He does a great job on this song, I never knew how close his vocal was to Paul's. Kinda sad that Paul just does backing vocals and a few instruments though, wish he was in it more.
Billy Hicks Clearly he's joking. Deadpan humor is sometimes difficult to convey on the Internet. I've had my sure of problems getting my intention across when I've attempted jokes online.
MrRichot It's lip synching to the music. Paul Simon is friends with Lorne Michaels from SNL. And he wanted Paul to do the song on SNL and he couldn't because of scheduling conflicts. And Lorne helped put this video together and suggested an old SNL alumni, Chevy Chase, to help with it. Chevy Chase has perfect pitch when it comes to music. Notes and lyrics, meaning he only has to hear it or read it one time and he can duplicate it perfectly. Plus he was in a band too, before he made it big. So Chevy having perfect pitch in music was a great choice to do this for what they wanted to do in the video. Not being smart, just telling the story behind the video.
It came out when I was a true freshman in college. Now that I returned to NIU and joined the Pep Band on bass (Spring 2016); what a thrill to do some shredding and turn some heads. Yeah, kiddies. This is how you lay down a groove! LOL
The funny thing was that I had to hold back so that the piccolos could be heard. Ummm....Paul Simon's bassist didn't back off. Tell them to play louder! lol
The ones we did the most were Basket Case (Green Day), Final Countdown (Europe), Eye of the Tiger (Survivor) and Rocky...which I performed with Maynard Ferguson in '86 as a true freshman. lol. The entire band really didn't play much outside of the school fight song. There were about 50 songs in the folio, but for the women's basketball games I always requested that we do this one. The team...how shall I say it...really grooved to it during warm ups. :)
My daughter just bought this album yesterday. It's timeless. We were remarking that if it was recorded today, it would still be a hit. Absolutely classic, brilliant stuff.
When I was a kid, I loved Chevy Chase. I used to think this was his song and watch the video incessantly. You can only imagine how crushed I was when I was old enough to realize it was "that little guy's" song.... lol. Still holds up after all these years, though. Love it.... and Paul Simon, too! :)
A) you mean "Still Crazy After All These Years". Ya I just did that. And B) Paul Simon is definitely one of the greatest American songwriters in popular music history. Alphabetically, gotta be a top 5 of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder.
@@2maxmax1max Before Paul Simon became famous as a solo artist, he was part of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. That's how most people came to know. The poster thought he was watching Simon and Garfunkel. Not Simon and Chase.
I could watch this video *all day long!* It's funny and the rapport between Paul and Chevy Chase is awesome! They really look like they're having fun and Chevy's "stealing" of the lyrics and the look on Paul's face is *priceless!* *Thumbs up* all the way!
this is too funny......these guys did a great job entertaining me. Both classic, brilliant artists of many varieties. Adorable men. Thank you, boys & whoever posted this. Wonderful.
+jacky pattersont I was thinking the same thing as I watched the video. I've been listening to this song to prepare me for the day for weeks, but only just now saw the video. i especially love how it makes fun of that self pitying attitude people tend to fall into while all the while being so uplifting and leaving the listener hopeful with the last verse.
Remember the days when popular music was written, actually written, by musicians and played by musicians? Now, we have rap and Taylor Swift. 100 steps backwards.
And they're juvenile at best . Nothing of actual musical substance. Using the same old 4 chords over and over doesn't constitute a musician, just a poet that considers the music an afterthought. But hey, that's pop for ya.
Graceland is one of the best albums of all time. Paul's songwriting is as brilliant as the stuff he did with Art. The baseline in this song is just fantastic!
As a 13 years old, this video was my first taste of Paul Simon's music. I thought that Chevy Chase was Paul Simon, and the short guy was a comic sidekick.
I called it 'town centre' because it sounds better than 'city centre'. Poetic licence, and all that. Besides, where I come from, we spell it 'centre' ;)
from songfacts..............."So where did "Al" and "Betty" in this song come from? That stems from a 1970 party that Simon hosted with his wife, Peggy Harper. Simon's friend, the composer Stanley Silverman, brought along another composer named Pierre Boulez, and when he made his exit, Boulez called Simon "Al" and his wife "Betty." Boulez was French, and he wasn't being rude - it was just his interpretation of what he heard - Paul=Al Peggy=Betty."
This video came out when i was 6. I loved it. I always got Paul and Chevy confused with Penn and Teller. Who I also loved.... even though i was too young to understand anything they did.
I play this every morning it start's my day with a smile and put's me back at that time when we were young, everyone on SNL and all the band's the artist's we were all about the same age, those were the best of time's, I feel lucky to have been there and lived every moment,we were all young and beautiful
WHEN WE LIVED IN THOSE DAYS I THOUGHT THEY WOULD NEVER END EVERY DAY WAS JUST SOMETHING BEING IN THE U. S. WAS SO SPECIAL JUST AS THE 50 S WERE IF GOD CAN HEAR ME ILL TAKE THE 80S AND 90 S ONCE MORE PLEASE AND ONLY IN CHICAGO OR LA
My sister just had me a brand new, beautiful, totally perfect nephew today. She named him Alvie Brock...yea I know ALVIE!!! but it is for our grandfather....anywho I have sung him this song all day. I have loved this song ever since it first came out when I was a little girl. I developed the BIGGEST crush ever on Chevy Chase and had to watch every movie he acted.
This song reminds me of my father bringing me for a haircut as a child in the 80s, vivid memories of it playing in the background while Max the barber sang along
One of the best vids ever made!!! Chevy and Paul pull it off perfectly!! Simple and yet so entertaining we are drawn to it like a magnet. I don't think many viewers can not watch it entirely start to finish!! Its a classic!!

I played this song in high school for marching band. We did a Paul Simon show. It was absolutely amazing. I still get goose bumps when I hear this song because it was such a joy to play & perform. Such a great song! Also I did have to do that solo because I played flute. It was NOT easy. & we also did that dance at the end. haha
Love this to pieces! I have it in my favourites and always get a laugh watching it. Brilliant. I know just how Paul feels. Wrestled with an overbearing choir member just like this. Funny to see it so well portrayed. Really puts the whole drama in perspective.
As I watch and listen to this vid I cant help but notice the classic sign bottom right. What a classic this was-as far as classics go- this is certainly my no 1
Look on the bright side; At least you don't have to wait for ages for the good shit to be released like those of us who grew up in, or near, the era had to endure. Believe you me there was plenty of shit being released back then too, lol.

Who could hate this song?? The only people i can think of is people who hate themselves!!

This'll always be one of my top 10 videos of all time. Paul and Chevy knocked it out of the park.
Hell yeah, i'm addicted to this too =)
That song talks too me so much, just replace Al by my name Aurélien and you'll guess the rest ^^
Chevy's an amazing singer. He does a great job on this song, I never knew how close his vocal was to Paul's.
Kinda sad that Paul just does backing vocals and a few instruments though, wish he was in it more.

Billy Hicks are you serious?
Billy Hicks Clearly he's joking. Deadpan humor is sometimes difficult to convey on the Internet. I've had my sure of problems getting my intention across when I've attempted jokes online.

lucky
May I call YOU Al? LOL : )
28 years later, the video/song still makes me smile. Classic '80s pop without the '80s glam.
😂
This video is still hilarious. You can never get enough of Chevy Chase and Paul Simon is a brilliant musician
Hard to believe this was 30 years ago now!
+xnonsuchx Man.... I was going to say the exact same thing..... Thunder stealer

That must of been fun as hell... What other good tunes did the pep band play ?

And B) Paul Simon is definitely one of the greatest American songwriters in popular music history. Alphabetically, gotta be a top 5 of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder.
Alex G You might want to add Jeff Lynne to that list of yours.
Sean Pickman
?
Jeff Lynne is English…
When this video first came out, I was amazed at how much Art Garfunkel looked like Chevy Chase. I was not a smart child.
You weren't the only one.. X'D
Frijole 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 holy fuck
Frijole you may not be a smart child but u sure are a funny child or were....
I don't get it
@@2maxmax1max Before Paul Simon became famous as a solo artist, he was part of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. That's how most people came to know.

Chevy Chase was an intermediate species between Andy Kaufman and Will Ferrell.
Yossel Rozzy Roz He's VERY Andy Kaufman-esque in this video. :-)
Richard Share Totally agree :)
Yossel Rozzy Roz Neither could have played Chevy's character in Caddy Shack. Will would have been crazy and Andy would have been, just wrong.
Yossel Rozzy Roz You know he's not dead, right?
Christoffer Svärd I know he's not, but Will Ferrell is. :(
I never got to listen to these songs as I grew up but now that I'm listening to them. Damn the 70's and 80's has some great music! XD
I could watch this video *all day long!* It's funny and the rapport between Paul and Chevy Chase is awesome! They really look like they're having fun and Chevy's "stealing" of the lyrics and the look on Paul's face is *priceless!* *Thumbs up* all the way!

Paul Simon, in the rock and roll hall of fame twice. truly a legend.
In the 80's, people thought the 80's were hard-core, conservative, user-pays, brutal. By comparison to now, it seems like a sweet and innocent time.
IKR? With the current politics, it's just frustrating. Some good music to take my mind off of it :)
People in the 70s felt that way about the 50s.
it’s a hard, hard, hard, a hard rain’s gonna fa-a-all...
cant help but start tapping my foot, and dancing, then i start singing, think i've played this song 5x in a row, (y) (y) (y)
This is the only song that momentarily takes me out of my depression.

same here...after my granddad died i played it over and over...my grandparents are named betty and alvin
Sorry to hear that. Hope things improve. :)
"Don't worry be happy "works for me.
Classic, indeed - "Graceland" is an album for all time.
AMEN!
ABSOLUTELY !!! One of the most upbeat collection ever :) A gem.
How could anybody dislike this video?!
if you feel that way why do you have so many comments littered all over this video?
Wait....someone dislikes this video?....they will hate "me and julio" then....lmao
Mmmh..How about that masonic handshake at 0:12
Georg Steinhauser Its the kids of the now. Kids now just dont get great music.
Dude you smoking 80s were fucking bad ass 80 bands bro and Ozzy went solo and kicked ass Aerosmith, Metallica, Guns and Roses. 80s kicked so much ass.
Chevy lip synchs this song better than most singers their own music! LOL
@Elsa Debroglie Idiot!! And not cool using the word retarded to describe people..
@Carolann Cannuli-Denton Yes it is!!!

"Get these mutts away from me".
A VERY useful phrase to learn while trying to navigate your way through Essex town centre on a Saturday night...

Essex town center....
I called it 'town centre' because it sounds better than 'city centre'. Poetic licence, and all that.

Such a simple yet effective video.
How are videos "effective?"
My dad loved this song...still makes me smile... love you daddy...R.I.P!
Ok HOW has weird al not made a parody called: call me weird al!?!
Actually, the British comedy partners Smith and Jones did a parody of this song called "You can call me Paul" :D
A very unique bass groove.
I love this song!! Paul and Chevy are great together!!!
Graceland is really a brilliant album
+Marty C awesome album and was so different for its time
+Marty C Yeah but it was illegal to do business with South Africa at the time. How come Paul Simon got away with that?
one of my favorites
He didn't get away with it, he was actually put on the UN Blacklist and banned from South Africa, however he was taken off of both in '87.
One of the best music videos ever 🥰! Paul Simon and Chevy Chase work so well together 😊👍!
paul is brilliant.. one of the greatest contemporary musicians out there..
Why yes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo IS good.
Funny 30 years ago, funny now.
This song brings back some amazing memories of the 80's living in Brighton UK... Good times :)

Chevy Chase knew all the words to this song before any of us did.
Absolutely love, love love this song! Instant smile and dancing, no matter where I am!
I enjoy this video, Chevy is hillarious!! Paul awesome musician!!
Heavy Penn & Teller vibes here.
haha
Nothing to do with the height difference, just the way they play off each other. It's like watching an episode of Bullshit.
A song for eternity!

Who misses the 80s
I came here to see Chevy's amazing white blazer...and his mime / mimicry talents.
Stayed for Paul's amazing song :)
This song reminds me of my father bringing me for a haircut as a child in the 80s, vivid memories of it playing in the background while Max the barber sang along

because now days we have rappers, and nikki minajs.

One of my favorite videos back in the day. I was 17 didn't have a care in the world❤
Talk about flashbacks to childhood!
I never cared for this song when it came out, but the lyrics were strangely prescient considering they were in 1986! Listening from a different perspective now...
My childhood.... just came flooding back! ❤ 👧👨My dad and I would do the dance when this video came on MTV. 😁
This video always brings a smile to my face.
Does anybody notice @ 1:56 Chase drinks the water, places it to his left, then drops it?
YAEH I WATCHED OVER AND OVER ,DON'T SEE IT BREAKING IT JUST KIND OF FADES OUT AS IT IS FALLING
He also puts the little recorder instrument in there, too.
Aquaria Austin
Irish tin whistle.

John Veitch That's a Drum stand, not a table, the water is in a plastic cup and hit's the floor.

You´re right it were good times. ;)
Ah yes, the 80s. They were some great years.

This is a classic.
1.58 I've seen this clip how many times? No top on the table. Chase drops his drinking glass through it.
+heisdeadjim It's not a table, it's the drum stand
J Thomas I know that NOW lol. For.... twenty some years or so I always thought it to be a table!
It's not a table, buddy.
I always thought it was a table too. not once have I noticed the glass either! Hahahahaha
it's not a table, it's a stand for the drum!
Simply love this song !
I still love this after all these years. Great. Remember watching on Saturday night live.
My Dad did that chevy chase leg cross thingy while I was a kid - cracked me up! He still will do it HE'S NINTY ONE - love it!

Almost 30 years and I had no idea it was Chevy Chase the whole time!
I have 3 Daughters ,they were brought up on Paul Simon and this is the song !!
Just the happiest song and video of all time.
