  • Dr. Carlo Lombardi works out his issues with women in this sensitive (if not creepy and oily and filthy and Freudian) film about a hypnotist and his devoted assistant. John Agar fills a portion of the screen as dependably as ever, this time doing a very good Jack Nance impression.

I saw some of the original series on the Comedy Channel in the early 90s (before it was Comedy Central). It was weird for me to get used to different hosts, though, they're all pretty different, and also it was funny to see "Dr. Forrester's mom" get younger and turn into "Pearl."

I missed a huge chunk of MST3K when it was on tv because life was insane for my in the late 90s/early 00s, I was so confused when I came back to the show years later and the entire show had been recast. I finally started watching them here on RUclips, out of order, and had this very reaction.

@@Sidneycozzoi yeah I've really come to love the late Joel and Mike episodes, I've seen some of the newer shows but honestly it's harder to see those because of paywalls. The real problem is that most of the planet's population doesn't live in the US so even though I do have Netflix, it locks off MST3k seasons 11 and 12, making my subscription meaningless for joel. Keeping the tapes circulating like this is still vital for the fans.

Paul Blasdell plays the "She Creature". Born in 1929 and died of stomach cancer in 1986, I believe. He is noted for making this costume and others for such movies as "Voodoo Woman", "The day the World Ended" and "It conquered the Earth". He really didn't get the credit he should had for his work, but some people in Hollywood regarded him a very talented gentleman.

He mentions working with Paul on making the She-Creature and the Venusian from "It Conquered the World." But Paul eventually became so bitter with Hollywood the friendship collapsed. Have to give the producer some credit here for going out of his way to hire many older character actors who needed work, in place of unknowns who hadn't paid their dues, who were looking for a break who would've acted for free or peanuts just to get a credit. Alex Gordon was a movie fan in real life and a fan of many of the actors he grew up with. He brought in a few younger people (like Lance Fuller) but mixed in those older veteran actors (and even the comedian El Brendell!) on this film, as he would on a number of other movies he produced (like THE ATOMIC SUBMARINE and THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED)...a mix of the old and the new. I have heard that he developed scripts to make sure there were parts for older and out of work actors to have parts.

Living right down the road from Keller's childhood home, I was just thinking about this reference. She was reported to be ornery as caged boar before she could communicate and completely trashed her room repeatedly as a result. I imagine this was what he meant. You might well have already known, and that's cool. I just thought it blunts the sharpness of what could otherwise be taken as a kind of offensive joke.

The way Bill talks during the doll sketch gives me the creeps, but I love it. Also, the doctor could have been arrested. I'm pretty sure he could be charged with obstruction. Obstructing a double murder is very serious. He also tampered with evidence by entering a crime scene. That's a felony for sure. Considering that, they could have charged him for sure.

If I'm following this movie right (its incredibly grating to follow, so I might not be) there's a lot of circumstantial evidence from the police's point of view that Lombardi is a serial killer that somehow leaves no physical evidence, but leaves calling cards that relate to his act on the bodies. Even if he couldn't be arrested he'd probably be run out of town.

The thing is, it's a pretty interesting premise for a movie. BOTH the sleazy promoter AND the skeptical scientist believe Lombardi is a charlatan, but ironically, he's not. He's a selfish sleazebag, but a genuine mystic. Tragically, he is fully aware that he can compel what's-her-name to ACT like she loves him, but can't actually make her love him. He knows that his dysfunctional manipulations result in senseless murders, but he's too much in love to stop. Fortunately, the movie itself turned out to be...one of the best episodes of MST3K.

A hypnotist is able to control a prehistoric part of the brain that leads to the victim becoming a physical manifestation of of the creature that existed when operating with that specific portion of the brain. Some thought was put into that compared to the trend of radiation spawned monsters of the time. Plus the monster’s costume is well done.
