    Great video. Unfortunately fell into the same trap, paid around $1,000 and I can't make use of the camera's features since I can't subscribe to Arlo smart in my country... the whole setup is useless now! Even if I use an external hard disk it just isn't practical at all. Really hate Arlo for not making this clear ... wouldn't recommend this brand at all!

      not hey didnt. All other devices, there is no way to directly connect to a device without port forwarding and/or using a VPN. The only "easy" way is if you still keep a middle man involved, in which case connecting through arlo's servers and this defeats the entire purpose of DIRECTLY connecting to the device. This is what you and those who complain about this do NOT realize. SMH

    1. Setting up VPN on modern routers is very easy and free.
    2. Port-forwarding is typical to make your internal networking available publicly and Arlo is correct in advising it is a security risk because opening things up to the internet inherently does increase security risk. Arlo could absolutely use UPNP to bypass manual port-forwarding, but it can be argued port-forwarding is very easy to setup in all modern routers (you don't need to contact your ISP unless you don't know how to work with your router). Eufy uses UPNP and carries the same security risks; all internet connected devices do. Eufy homebase connects to Chinese servers regularly… no one has researched what on earth it is sending out.
    Besides these two things, Arlo have released a pretty crappy/half-polished feature. Disappointing? Or expected?

    • @SteveDOES
      @SteveDOES  4 года назад

      Thanks for the input John. Networking configurations is NOT one of strong suites (obviously) :)

    • @circle4922
      @circle4922 4 года назад +2

      These are good points.
      -Setting up a vpn is incredibly easy... there's really no "setting up" at all.
      -The vpn comes with an app (for mobile, etc.)
      -Setting up port forwarding is easy.
      -Worrying about your privacy when you're looking into *WIFI* enabled "security cameras" that talk about/have people wanting to share their security video camera footage with "social media"...is retarded - completely stupid.
      I'd like local storage. But there are so many of these "security cameras" with all kinds of privacy and security gaps (overt fails in concept) around I can hardly find anything other than a trail camera to consider. Man...
      Thanks for the video @Steve DOES.
      I'll look into the Eufy. I was considering the Wyze...because it's cheap, but obviously... same issues (I'd wanna disable, physically if need be, the wifi and all that stuff).

    • @nepentheanonymous
      @nepentheanonymous 3 года назад +1

      Yes. I was going to say the same thing as @John Doe. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe It’s typical for real/traditional security camera setups (IP cameras) to require either port forwarding or vpn to access local network cameras/ equipment remotely. Otherwise Arlo would have to use their resources to allow customers to access their own footage. IMO it’s refreshing that Arlo allows some form of allowing customers to manage their own video footage for free unlike Ring and other competitors but I can understand the complaints about the somewhat buggy software.

    • @justrbloke
      @justrbloke 2 года назад

      1. Setup maybe free, but a VPN is not.
      2. You do need to contact your ISP if like mine, they control all ports either all open or all closed, massively increasing security risks, a less than clever idea from a security company, who has the option still available with their lower level Pro products to deliver everything as a Cloud based service, as seen in this video.
      Totally crap "feature set" from Arlo, appears to be driven solely as a recurring revenue idea, on a product already being sold at top dollar, rather than something coherent with the rest of the product suite and loyal customer expectations. Have gone from an NPS score of +100 to -100.

      I’ve heard others having this problem too. It could be a defective battery or that the camera is picking up a lot of motion. Just recently I brought a Pro3 camera inside to use as a baby monitor. When it was outside I got 2-3 months of battery. Now that it’s inside I’m getting about 7-10 days. I also now know that my daughter moves around a LOT in her sleep. :)

    Normally I don't comment.. but I gotta say I totally agree with you. I'm very dissapointed and I have decided to return my set of 4 ultra cameras. Here is a list of things I disliked:
    - motion detection is bad. Postman was recorded first time when he arrived to the door. What about the huge van arriving infront of our door?! Sensitivity is 100%.
    - wifi range is bad. Cannot stream 4k image if camera distance is >15 m (wooden house). Sometimes no connection at all. Live image loading takes 10-15 s
    - you cannot connect cameras to your home wifi which is probably a lot better than Arlo "base station"
    - there is 10-15 s delay in live view
    - cannot access local videos via router VPN. It was said in Arlo forum this might be Android app specific problem.
    - no thumbnails for local videos until you open the video
    - 180 / 155 degree image is not being "straightened". 120 degree image has basically no fish eye effect
    - no option to use night vision only. Usually b&w image is sharper
    - app HMI could be a lot better
    - company seems to be super greedy.. first make the product, then sell it. Not other way around.

What is it with Americans nowadays, that you want to get paid so much for your own work, yet you think decades of engineering design and storage and server maintenance should cost you pennies? Do you have any idea what things actually cost? Building space, software engineers, hardware engineers, network engineers, managers, supply chain, servers, backups, power, insurance... You're lucky that you get the option to buy the older cams with 7-day streaming and use local storage with the new cams at all. Other companies that offer "free" are getting their payback by selling your data, whether it's your video, your info and preferences for advertising, or other. If you're willing to give that up, go for it. The rest of us will respect the engineering hours that provide the product at such a low cost.

      you still connect through Eufy's server as the middle man. So basically its not a direct connection to the device. For consumer grade basic stuff yea its fine. But if eufy's servers are down or they go out of business, your device is nothing. Arlo eliminates all middle men and you connect directly to it so even if arlo's servers are down you can connect to the device to see footage (assuming it still works normally without arlo servers being needed)

      VPN as a service is what you are refering to when you think of NordVPN, or EasyVPN. These services are for allowing you to secure your comnection from everyone and control were your internet source is from.
      VPN or Virtual Private Networks as a technology is simply the idea of securing all data between two endpoints. Generally it does this by creating a secure tunnel between the two devices and and routing all traffice to the remote point.
      Some routers have VPN server funtions built in but not all. There are also other ways to setup a vpn with software on a remote device. I have it on my unraid server, for some commectivity. You can also do it fairly cheaply with something like a RaspberryPi and Open VPN.
      So with that understanding a vpn service is simply a company that has setup a bunch of thise remote secure endpoints to obfuscate where you really reside. Using a vpn software with you own equipment makes the secure connection, but still keeps all of your internet traffic sourced from your home.
      It should also be pointed out the setup for port forwarding dynamically allocates the port for access. This randomization help mitigate potential attack vectors bynot making it predictable.
      There is room for improvement certainly, but beyond providing proper thumbnails i am not sure how much better it can get. We have to remember this it intended to completely offload the need for Arlo servers.
      I would also like the ability to run continuously recorded videon to it and default my storage location to local access instead of having to change it everytime.

      I made a reply to give you another perspective. I'll reiterate it here though that, what Arlo has done is allowed expert level feature that most consumers and regular users will find intimidating. What they basically are allowing is the user to connect directly to the device without going through them. No matter what device/brand/etc, the process in doing that is not user friendly. But its a major benefit because you no longer rely on having to connect to a middle man so if their servers are down or they go out of business your devices still operate as normal. Now this next part is what you should confirm for me or others-----does the camera system still work as normal without any internet? Meaning motion detection recording and then recording to the local storage? Does all of that work normally even if the camera is offline? Obviously you no longer will get notifications on your phone. BUt if the answer is yes, then with their new feature of being able to directly connect to the device, then arlo has opened up their system to truly be an offline system that works and still being able to retrieve the videos via being on same network or port forwarding.

    Lot's of new routers have VPN options. For example many TPlink routers give you access to an OpenVPN connection which is super easy to set up. Then you simply download the OpenVPN connect app on your phone and turn the VPN on whenever you're away from home.
    The general "port forwarding leaves you vulnerable" argument is... misleading. Lot's of devices use UPnP which auto port fowards (assuming your modem/router support it) so there are always ports "open" into your network

    I think what everyone here should realize is that in the world of security cameras, there are generally two types of products; products targeted for the DIYer/ homeowner and products targeted for professionals/ commercial use. What Arlo has done is an attempt to make somewhat of a hybrid product between the two (a diy product with a pro feature). I previously worked as a professional installer of commercial network equipment, A/V equipment, and security cameras. We installed commercial setups as well as residential and we regularly opened ports on routers or setup VPN’s for remote access to cameras. For years I have been looking for a product that combined Harry Homeowner features like Alexa integration with more traditional IP camera features like vpn, other networking options, and most important NOT being required to use a cloud to store/access my own videos. In theory what Arlo has done is great. The base station is acting as an NVR! Besides the thumbnail issue (which definitely should be fixed), I don’t really see the problem. I hope everyone is able to calm down, get their setups working properly, and realize that concepts like this are potentially huge game changers in the DIY market and is really how IP cameras traditionally have been and should be. Companies like Nest and Ring are the real crooks haha.

    I think this a bit harsh.
    Lets start with connectivity. If the person supporting this is at all familiar with connecting back to home without a vpn the port forwading thing will be pretty easy. They also already know anytime something of that nature is less secure. Mainly because that device and app is exposed to the internet for everyone to see. At that point you are depending on how well it is secured on your local device. Vulnerabilities are constantly being found so even though nothing is known today something may be found later.
    The VPN connectivity is speaking directly about using a vpn to your home router and not a service. That is a free item most likely. I have test out a vpn that uses my home server and that isnt working. It is likely a routing issue and i am working with arlo support to fix figure it out.
    It isn't perfect, but they have openly stated they are working on thumbnails. I would expect it will be resolved eventually.
    You seem to gloss over the fact that this is completly subscription free with any of the newer cameras. This effectively turns the base station into a NVR that you can attach as many cameras as you like to it
