As always Steve. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Been w/ Arlo for over 5 yrs now. And the only thing that drives me crazy (still) is the delay from when the system detects motion to the time that I receive the notification on my android.
Hey Steve, thank you! V much appreciate this, spent a few hrs trying to work this out! Important note/feedback: you note you can’t have multiple ‘devices’ act in response to (eg) one sensor detecting motion in a custom mode. You *can*! This is totally the coolest thing w the modes, I think. After you set up the custom mode trigger (camera sensor detects motion), in your video you chose one action (a camera to record) then hit save. *Instead*, before hitting save, hit the ‘add device’ button. You can then add as many actions on different devices as you want. Eg, all cameras can start recording. You can play a unique sound on your Arlo chime, to let you know someone was detected (eg) in the back yard. You can turn on an Arlo spotlight in your laundry, to scare the hell out of the intruder.
I have an Arlo Pro2, and was told it could only be used around the house, but I have an acre, and one camera picks up reception at a building that is at the bottom of the property. I am impressed with the reception. I found your video to be very helpful, as written instructions are not for me, I need to see it, and the videos are the answer for me.
Of all the systems I have used either privately or thru work, hands down the most intuitive system out there...will be going out today to purchase a 4th pro-2....love love love this system...I use geofencing and it works perfectly thanks for you videos
Thank you for putting together this video. I used to use ArloAssistant/ArloPilot from Smartthings because I could automate with my home and away. However Arlo cut those off so its good to see what I was doing with Geofencing is the Arlo "best practice". I still have more tweaking to do to get it right but this is good to verify what the best practice is. I use Arlo Pro2s and Security Lights with SmartThings.
Your videos are very well done. Easy to listen to and all valid inputs. Recently got into smart tech and you're one of the first few channels I go to for reviews. Seriously, keep up the good work man!
Bought The Arlo Ultra 2 9/20/20 My Mom is 85 and lives in Apt behind us. She wants to maintain her (independence) so when we leave for overnight trip we could feel a little more at ease. Love the product so far. Videos are very helpful - Linda and Greg Fontenot Lafayette, LA
I have ten cameras (ARLO & ARLO PRO2) on two base stations that are in two different locations. I am adding two ARLO Q cameras to a third base station to be used for indoors monitoring using location mode. Thank you. You have a great site.
I'm loving your videos. Straightforward. I'm learning so much from you. We decided to go with Arlo at some point. Setting up Modes this way makes so much sense and really doesn't look that complicated. Thanks! Go Pack Go.
Another great video Steve. I've set up a few custom modes myself and really have gotten used to them. It will be great when the systems are smart enough to learn who lives in the home and activate when unusual people, cars are part of the scene. Keep up the good work my man.
I like the ability to set up the modes where they won't be using up the memory on the external hard drive I want to set up with the Arlo Pro 3 on unnecessary videos inside the house while we are home. Great info. Thanks.
Great video Steve. We have the ultra 3 camera with chime and door bell. Looking to zone the back yard to inactive when home and keep front door and driveway always active
Steve, Very informative video again. I just purchased a 2 camera Pro 3 system to go along with my Arlo Pros. I am currently using scheduling mode, but will give geofencing a try after seeing your video. I hope I will have no problems setting up my new system. I plan on using both systems at the same time. My new cameras should arrive tomorrow. Wish me good luck!! I would love some Arlo swag anytime.
Steve, this was EXACTLY what I was looking for to set up a custom mode for my Arlo Pro 2 system. I was on the Arlo tech support chat for over an hour yesterday and the tech sent me instructions that did not work. Great job explaining this!
Thank you for all the info/reviews you provide. Currently in the market trying to decide what camera system to choose from. Climbing up in the attack isn’t an option on running camera cables. So I’m researching all the wireless options. Thank you again for helping me narrow down to my two options, Ring or Arlo.
I’m in the market for a camera system and this video has been the best details I have found. I believe I will go with the Pro 3 after watching your videos.
Steve, Thank you for the great videos on the Arlo systems. Your Videos convinced me to go Arlo all the way. I picked up a Pro 2, 4 camera system and set it up the same day in about 2 hours (probably more like 4) the next day I picked up an additional Pro 2. Mainly I bought the system to let me know when my 16 year old son sneaks out. I tweaked all of my Activity zones and set up the Smart notifications. I have 3 dogs and live on a corner. If I didn't use the smart notifications I would be throwing my phone across the room from all the notifications. My camera outside of the garage was making me crazy with "Person" notifications because that is where I stand when I let the dogs out. That battery only lasted about a week. I know I could pause notifications but I was looking for a better way. This video gave me the answer. I used Schedule instead of Geo fencing because I want that camera to notify me while I'm sleeping. I found your explanation to be instrumental in my setup. I am assuming that the Smart notifications will still be active with the custom mode even though I did not see that set up in the custom mode set up due to the Smart settings being in each camera setting. I will let you know if it does not use Smart notifications. Thanks again for what you do. Edit; just tested the Smart notification and they work like normal.
Great video! I have been trying to wrap my head around these things as well. Now I understand it better. Using the Pro2 here. Thanks - now I can finish setting up my system so I don’t have hundreds of pointless video snips of me walking in and out of the door on a nice day!
I wasn’t aware that you could do that. The modes have always confused me as well. Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial and showing step by step how to create a mode. I’m going to try it when I get home, thanks!
I have a mix of Arlo 2, Arlo Pro 2, Arlo Ultra, and Arlo Pro 3. I use modes for different settings for my cameras during daytime and nighttime. Great tutorial
Awesome video can’t wait to get my hands on these cameras I like the idea of geofencing. I feel that turning off cameras indoors is great. I’ll have to mess with modes to see what I can come up with.
So that's what the "Add a Mode" is for....wasn't sure exactly sure what that entails but still a little confused about it. Haven't tried geofencing but now it's set up, thanks to you! I have the Ultra and loving it btw :)
Very Helpful! I couldn't figure out arming separate camers. I have Pro and Pro2 system. I have also installed several Pro/Pro2 systems for friends and family. Even installed the Pro2 system for my church. I love the system and what it offers and would love to win. Motts from NJ.
I was just about to return my two Arlo Ultra cameras etc. to Best Buy when, after eight days of diddling, I figured out why so much trouble: If you have two people on the "account" Arlo should have told you (and me) in large print that only one phone app will have Motion Detection, volume control, and other commands. This is without a doubt the worst software I've seen in 40 years (!!!) of dealing with computers, ham radio, and electronics. And their support stinks like Earthlink in 1998! You will NOT find what I just told you about "joint" (paired) cameras and software settings. I'm surprised at you, Steve. In fact, Steve, why don't you do one video on software ... right after the one on installation. You'll be the first.
When in away mode, it’s a good idea to have the indoor camera start recording when motion is detected outside. This way if some one enters your house the indoor cam will record it
Your first statement about there was no way to have a camera active or not active, Sure there is, sure just go to setting for that camera and turn it off and leave the others on. regards to modes, they are great, I have it set up with 5 cams, do to different things during the day compared to night. Keep up the great videos
Arlo Pro 2, six pack. A little disappointed that the motion activation only has a range of ten feet, but will try to figure out a good work around. Will start playing with modes, just to make life easier. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great tip very helpful I needed that advice I have the Pro 3 went in pre-ordered it two days after your posted your first pro 3 video loving them so far
Learned a lot from the video. Just bought the Arlo Pro 4 XL from Costco. I did not get the magnetic mounts. Still trying to find how to choose what motions the camers record, animal, vehicle or person.
You went thru these steps so quickly that I was almost as confused as when you started. Could you please create a video with a slow, step by step instruction so that those of us that are older, and not as tech savvy as others? I do not know why Arlo had to make setting a schedule for our cameras so non intuitive and confusing. Thank you.
Hello just wanted to say that your videos on the Arlo ecosystem is just simply amazing. Some great insight! As you are on communication with Arlo, when do you think they would come out with a flood light? I have an Arlo pro 2 four camera system, I am waiting for the backward comparability for the Arlo ultra
I have the Ultra. As for the device(s) it is referring to a camera and spotlight combo. In previous systems I’ve own I’ve had to make some pretty crazy trigger setups. For example you can have one camera be triggered by motion, have camera 2 record video and so on. With a combination of IFTTT and things I can even have my cameras turn on and off depending on weather my Automower is in its area. Though Arlo has had some serious bumps, it is currently the only system that works for me.
Thank for a helpful video. I have wanted to have cameras record at the same time in order to follow activity from 2 cameras in the front of my house - so when the activity leaves one camera zone it is picked up in the second camera’ zone.
hello steve. i am not going to use modes right now. but if i decide to in the future this video will clear things up. i have the ultra 2 cam kit and 2 pro3 add on cameras that i love
I don’t yet have a ultra but I would love to win one. With my Arlo pro 1, 2 camera set up I have been having issues over the past summer with the software. The device was always taking too long to connect and always needed to be reset. Luckily this month the Arlo software seems to be fixed and is working faster than ever before. I can finally say I love my Arlos again!
Great info I’m looking forward to apply it to my set up. I was wondering if you have any videos on advice to what is the best placement on different scenarios so I could get a better idea on how to take advantage of the motion sensors and recognition features. Currently using Arlo pro 3 system
Very instructional Steve. Been using combo of geofence and schedule for a while now. Geofencing has been a little borked since the new app though. Using pro 2 and old base station. Curious if other base stations seeing problems as well.
Hey Steve, Very informative. Have you done anything with the " Works with Arlo"? Have been wanting to add a smart locks to my doors that would interface with Arlo.
I have been using Arlo custom modes for several years. One of the things I do with my system, I have one or more of the other cameras record video, when a specific camera senses motion. (In addition to having the sensing camera record video.) I also have created custom modes for my Arlo security lights (which I use only as motion sensors). They are set up to activate specific cameras to record video in the event a specific light senses motion. Within all of that, you can individually set the recording duration, and types of notifications you want, if any. The only downside is neither Alexa nor IFTTT will activate custom modes, they will only disarm camera modes. The security lights remain active. (I do have the security light base plugged into a smart plug, so I can kill the power to the base, via an Alexa voice command.) Otherwise, one controls everything via the Arlo app or website. (I have IFTTT setup so that one or more interior lights turn on in the event one or more Arlo cameras sense motion. It is set to overnight hours only.) I use the original Arlo HD cameras, Arlo Pro cameras, and Arlo security lights. FYI Arlo security lights do not count against the 5 camera max limit for the basic service. Lights are considered accessories. (I subscribe to Arlo Premier Smart.)
Hi Steve, this was helpful but, as you stated, a bit more advanced than what I was trying to learn. Modes in Arlo is a very difficult concept to grasp. It’s not intuitive to understand nor simple to set up. Do you know or can you point me to a basic setup guide? Thanks in advance!
I have an Arlo Ultra system. Plan to use modes to disable the indoor cameras via geofencing when our phones are within our home, and re-enable them when we leave.
wE just purchased the Arlo Ultra 2 and I love your helpful videos. I will watch them again tomorrow and follow your directions for modes. I like the idea of "outdoor mode". Question for you. Do the spotlights have to be on with night vision for filming?
I"m happy to hear that my videos are helpful. No you don't have to use the spotlights to record at night. You will need to turn on night vision though.
For the Arlo Ultra is there a way to set cams to continuously record? Just had someone take a few steps into my backyard but my cams didn’t detect them and start recording. I have the zone set past where the lady was walking but they weren’t triggered for some reason. Turns out the lady broke into a house soon after or before she came to my yard. Luckily I was awake and scared her off thru the window.
Is there a way where you can do this but also schedule a your indoor cameras to turn on at night while asleep to morning when you wake up. While using geofencing. Without opening app to arm it every night
Very helpful to understand the modes as I just bought a set of Ultra cameras. 2 questions: 1. It seems to make sense to keep your perimeter cams armed while at home, however would you not be spammed with push notifications when you are sitting outside in your back garden? 2. I also would like to set up one indoor camera in the hallway, would not want to have it armed while at home except during the nighttime. Any idea how I can achieve that while at the same time having the outdoor cameras active at all times when I am home (and preferably also solving my concern from question 1)? Many thanks!
This is very useful but my issue is that even though I am having too many notifications from the roof top watching the drive way ,Garage n the front door, It is missing some of the clips. Some times I can’t capture when driving out or in.
That swag bag would do me WONDERS!!! 😱😱 I have the Arlo Ultra 4 camera setup. Extra batteries and magnetic anchors with an extra long charger cable would help out a lot! I’m going to create a custom mode the same way you did for the exact same reason. Could you do a video on how to connect my Arlo Ultra system to HomeKit because I haven’t been able to add it to HomeKit since the update came out. I do not have an option for it in the Arlo app. I even went to my hub settings like the customer service employee mentioned but still did not have success in connecting my system to HomeKit.
Thanks! I just bought Arlo ultra and I’m worried my wyze cam which is right next to my Arlo ultra shows weak signal but my wyze shows strong signal. Again they are in the exact same spot. Don’t know why this is happening
I'm a disabled veteran and will set my Arlo Pro and the regular Arlo mode for outside on and inside off when home. I was wondering can the Arlo Doorbell be added and how
Hello Steve, I am a new subscriber and I have all kinds of questions about Arlo2. I have installed all of them yet if I push the live button I see them all come up. If I leave it up for awhile they all drop and the live button comes on again. My question is how do I keep them all on so I can look outside anytime without having to turn them on and go through the whole wait til they sync.
I have 8 Arlo Pro 2's inside and outside my home. All are on Smart Premier subscription, and I'm very happy with them. I've been using the geofencing feature for about 10 months with a custom 'Outdoor Only' mode similar to your video. BTW, on my Pro 2 GUI, at least using my PC, I CAN add a second or third device to activate when one of the cameras is tripped. Not sure why you can't with your Ultra model. Anyway, love your videos, and would love to win some swag!
I have plans for the Arlo 4 Pro bundle, which includes 3 cameras plus a door cam. I plan on adding an additional can, which will give me a total of 4 plus 1. I want my system to be set up exactly how it is in this video, and I hope I can make it happen on the pro 4 as I want my entire system to be on the same type of models. Call it OCD. Any suggestions?
Watch your videos with great interest and thank you! Is it possible to schedule motion? ie, a camera over my driveway would give motion alerts constantly as I wander in the driveway washing the car, putting the garbage out, etc. I do not want those motion alerts during my waking hours while I'm home. Is it possible to "schedule" motion alert notifications to function say from 10pm to 5:30am ONLY as well as retain the ability to turn all notifications on when I leave home? I'm looking for both functions. Second question, I'm thinking of buying the Pro 4 XL 3 cam/smart hub bundle from Costco. If I buy 2 bundles, I get 2 smart hubs. Do I need two smart hubs, 1 hub for each set of 3 cams? How many Pro 4 cams will 1 smart hub handle? Thank you for you help!
As always Steve. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Been w/ Arlo for over 5 yrs now. And the only thing that drives me crazy (still) is the delay from when the system detects motion to the time that I receive the notification on my android.

Love the product so far.

Just got the pro 2 today, so still finding our way around the system/app. But this will definitely help later on... so thank you.
I have an mix Arlo 2 and 3 stetup and I like you preference of configuration and I will add it to my mix. Thanks alot for sharing.
Just purchased the new Arlo Pro 3 cameras and can’t wait to try the geofencing feature!
We have an Arlo Pro. This video is just what we needed. Want outside cameras always ready to record but not inside when we are home.
Amazing video, this is exactly what I needed (wish Alro made this easier for us)
Super helpful tip for anyone with an Arlo. I was thinking of getting the Arlo Ultra.
Thanks for the great tip very helpful I needed that advice I have the Pro 3 went in pre-ordered it two days after your posted your first pro 3 video loving them so far
Just bought the ultra 4 camera black. Will check out the modes as soon as it gets delivered.
I uses my modes for different times of the day. This video was extremely helpful to my lifestyle. Thank you!
Very helpful! Answered the exact question I was asking and your video allowed me to set up a custom mode very similar to yours.
Learned a lot from the video. Just bought the Arlo Pro 4 XL from Costco. I did not get the magnetic mounts. Still trying to find how to choose what motions the camers record, animal, vehicle or person.
Thank you. Will be checking in for more info often
Thanks for putting time stamps. Although your video didn't help me, I nonetheless could skip around. Thumbs up.
You went thru these steps so quickly that I was almost as confused as when you started. Could you please create a video with a slow, step by step instruction so that those of us that are older, and not as tech savvy as others? I do not know why Arlo had to make setting a schedule for our cameras so non intuitive and confusing.

Arlo Pro 3 Black two Set camera kit. Activated my modes just the same way you did.
Arlo Pro 2 with 4 cameras. We love the system as we try to catch the person that is ding-dong ditching our home.
That was a great tip on how to creat a mode. Hopefully once I get an arlo system I will come back to this video
Thank you For taking the time the showers mode I did not know to think about mode. Now you have shown me thank you very much I have a pro4

It is set to overnight hours only.)
I use the original Arlo HD cameras, Arlo Pro cameras, and Arlo security lights.
Hey Steve, like the video. I am going to try this outdoor setting with my Arlo pro and Arlo pro 2 cameras. Paul from Louisiana.
wE just purchased the Arlo Ultra 2 and I love your helpful videos.
Just watched your video I have added my Arlo essential Xl spotlight camera to mode
Gotta question about the door sensors
Does the sensors have a alarm that will set off automatically when triggers?
For the Arlo Ultra is there a way to set cams to continuously record? Just had someone take a few steps into my backyard but my cams didn’t detect them and start recording. I have the zone set past where the lady was walking but they weren’t triggered for some reason. Turns out the lady broke into a house soon after or before she came to my yard. Luckily I was awake and scared her off thru the window.
I like that you go thru and explain the features. Thank you.
I use modes similar to you...I also schedule my outdoor cameras to be only on at evening/night while I'm at home
Is there a way where you can do this but also schedule a your indoor cameras to turn on at night while asleep to morning when you wake up. While using geofencing. Without opening app to arm it every night
Very helpful to understand the modes as I just bought a set of Ultra cameras. 2 questions:
I use the schedule mode, with various rules between camera that are monitoring my horses.
Hi, thanks! Is everything you said about the Pro 3 bases station still current in Oct 2021?
I have Arlo Ultras and want to use the modes effectively as I know they’re great tools. Thanks for this video!
Great tutorial on setting up modes. I have the Arlo Pro 2 with 2 cameras and the Arlo Security Lights.
Hoping to have the Pro 2 or 3 up and running soon. Focusing on people entering my yard by the front gate.
1 question can u set geofencing for 2 phones so if one is away but the other is home the cameras do not activate
Do you need a hub to use modes or is it enough with 2 Pro 4 cameras?
Thank you for the info & video." I have Arlo three camera" Will be buying Arlo Pro 2 and Pro 3 system...This is four my Grandmother.
Very helpful to understand the modes! Thanks for doing this!
Where are the best places to put the cameras/outdoor?
I gotta question. Is there a way to have devices in Geo Mode but yet have them all come on at night (scheduled on)?
good job explaining, MODES very important with 19 cams and 3 bases.
19?!!!! That's the most i've seen anyone post.
Is it possible to change notification sound on camera based on time of day?
I have 2 pro 4 cameras for out side my home
Am interested understand ing how to adjust the settings and use modes
I have 8 Arlo Pro 2's inside and outside my home. All are on Smart Premier subscription, and I'm very happy with them. I've been using the geofencing feature for about 10 months with a custom 'Outdoor Only' mode similar to your video. BTW, on my Pro 2 GUI, at least using my PC, I CAN add a second or third device to activate when one of the cameras is tripped. Not sure why you can't with your Ultra model. Anyway, love your videos, and would love to win some swag!
Congratulations! You won the Arlo swag bag giveaway. Please email me your address at SteveDoes@Outlook.com
Thanks for the info, I have been debating on either ARLO or RING
I have a mix of ones and twos, hoping to upgrade! Come on Black Friday sales!
I have 4 Arlo Ultra 2s and an Arlo Wired Doorbell. I use Arm Away when we’re gone to detect intruders, and scare away porch pirates.
Thanks for the info! Your videos led me to purchasing our Arlo Pro 3 system!
I have the arlo ultra 3 pack, and planing to buy one more ultra Camera
