do you have to disconnect the harddrive to view the videos? Can you not view them through the app on your phone? (like if you dont have the cloud storage)
Unfortunately you have to pay extra for continuous storage even if it’s local. I understand for cloud but restrictions on local just to force us into spending more is a deal breaker.

Great info. I didn't even think about it. Netgear has been having some cloud issues recently so this is definitely a huge consideration.
Especially since it's SO easy to do. Just plug it in and you're done.
If you are having trouble formatting your USB Drive, according to Arlo's KB, they use FAT32 formatting within the app.
To format to FAT32 format, open File Explorer or Disk Management, right-click your drive, choose "Format," select "FAT32" from "File System," and choose "Start" or "OK." To do that from Command Prompt or PowerShell, run the "format /FS:FAT32 X:" command replacing "X" with your drive letter.
Approx how much video per GB of USB?
Also, can you reccord/save more than 7 days on your USB?
+1👍 my 64GB usb has been saving all year and is still not full! also, end-users should be aware that this is almost a requirement since when you lose internet you have no chance of having recordings unless you have that external storage!

How will the cameras link to the base with no internet to save to the hard drive?
Can you access the videos that get saved in the drive remotely. Or do you always have to pull it out and attach to a PC? Does the drive have to be a certain format? I own a MacBook.
Did you ever find out? This is my main stipulation on whether or not to buy Arlo
@@SaintScotty you can access the recorded videos as long as your on the same WiFi network. The caveat is that it doesn’t show a preview thumbnail.

Arlo doesn’t provide video access anymore unless you buy into their subscription plan (ugh!). Is there a way to view videos captured onto your external hard drive “instantly?”
It will not format the USB drive on my VMB4000 base.

Does anyone know what the largest drive that the Arlo will recognize is? I'd be down to just grab an 8 tb external, but I don't want to if it won't recognize something that big.
Tried several external hard drives and USB thumb drives and Arlo will NOT format any of them! Help!! Arlo support is garbage.

Arlo introduces EOL policy, the local storage may fix the discontinue of 7 day cloud storage, how about the discontinue of email notification?

Enjoy the tutorials Steve. I purchased the Arlo Pro 2 system, external hard drive and 24/7 CVR plan. Only the motion detected videos are stored on the external drive and the continuous 24/7 is stored on the cloud for 2 weeks. Do you know of a way to select from the 24/7 recording and save it to my computer? I'm needing to save video evidence that wasn't motion triggered but from the timeline feature.
I'm not sure if CVR is different but, you can login to the website from your PC and download the clips that way.
@@SteveDOES I'm only able to stream back the past 2 weeks of continuous video but Arlo lacks a download feature. From the support forums everyone is saying you have to download a third party screen recording software to save any CVR footage. :(
I tried the Arlo Pro 2. I found it too glitchy and returned it. About a month later I received 99 email alerts for motion from the new owners home. When I returned it they didn't reset it before reselling it. I contacted tech support and they tried to say somebody must have accidentally put in my email address. I don't see how they could have done that and gone through the activation process. I redownloaded the app and removed the hub and cameras. Aftet that I didn't recieve anymore notifications.
Way too glitchy and creepy for me to recommend to anyone. They need to take steps to prevent this in the future.
YOU should have reset it before returning it.
@@demierre just imagine if some creep wanted to do this to spy on people. The company should be more responsible and have their system setuo so this couldn't happen. Plus I have no idea how to clear it out of their system.

How can you see the cameras on my TV?
I use an Amazon Fire TV Cube. I did a review on the cube a while back if you want to check it out.
Assuming that we have got enough storage, how long is the recording once a motion triggers the camera ? Is it recording until the motion stops are there is a timer for the recording to stop ?

You can set it to record until motion stops but it has a max of 300 sec.
very informative. Are you still happy with your Arlo system? I read on some reviews that the Arlo can be frustrating sometimes due to many issues such as connection failure, frame drops, delay in recording, missing videos even it was activated, and so on. I really need your input as I am planning to setup my own security camera. Thanks.
Hi Edwin, i'm still happy with my cameras. With the Pro2 i never had issues with connection failure or dropped frame rate. As far as missing videos, i thought that was happening to me until i measured and realized the back of my yard was over 30 feet away. Since the camera only has a 25 foot range it wasn't picking up the motion of the kids playing back in the yard. So keep that in mind when placing the camera and try to have it more centralized. Delays in recording is a problem but, that seems to be an issue with all cameras that are battery powered. The cameras have to go into some sort of standby mode or they would drain the battery after a few weeks. I do like that Arlo provides "3 second look back" when the cameras are plugged in. This way you don't have that delay. Hope this helps.
Not sure if you can help or not. I have the arlo pro 2 with 2 camera and hub. I then bought 3 essential cameras model Vmc2030. After the free trial online storage and monitoring is there a way to connect them all together to record on the hub or external hard drive. The essentials camera give me an alert but if whatever set it off is nit still there I cant see what did set it off.
How does automatic overwrite work exactly ?
If the connected storage is about to full then does it delete the previously recorded videos or some other data stored before connecting it to the basestation?
it will delete the oldest recordings first.
Can someone tell me how to keep the original timestamp of the video that you download from Arlo pro camera. It download automatically to Quick Time with no trace of time stamp. PLEASE HELP.
Nice video, the only thing I dont like is that you have to unplug it and connect it to a pc to view the footage. They should make it where you can view the footage onto Arlo itself.
They are working on that feature now. Should be ready by the end of 2019.

My Ultra 2 4K camera cannot record on Local storage with I pair it to VMB4000 Base Station. Other Arlo pro 2 pair on VMB4000 still record normaly.

Hi Miguel, Are you referring to adding a camera to the Arlo Base station? The base station will connect the cameras to the hard drive that you connect to it. i added Amazon affiliate links in the description of this video.

hi steve thanks for the kool info, i just finished setting up my arlo pro 2 cameras and base station, the only thing i dont know yet is if and how i can save and acces the video alerts in the base station. i followed you on this video but i dont see all those options on my app, i have the usb plug in and it says ready, can i even do this in the pro 2 and if not what do you recomend as far as the cloud can i see it in the library 7 days for free always i accidentally skipped the free trial when setting up this

It just records events. You can subscribe to CVR (Continual Video Recording). If you do subscribe, keep in mind that you pay per camera that you activate. Here's a link. www.arlo.com/en-ca/products/subscription-plans.aspx
I agree that they shouldn't even mention the phrase home security cameras.
You could try placing five cameras around a room that you want to be notified about. Make sure you get the images downloaded onto an SD drive or portable hard drive. That way at least they'll be date time stamped (right in the name of the file). Of course any lawyer will point out that the filename can be changed to anything you want. So take a screenshot of the webpage of the Library listing.
Don't be so quick to throw away your Nest cameras. At least they work. My Arlo system was painfully unreliable. After 4 months of trying I returned all 4 cameras.
How long does it save locally for? 7 Days or as long as there is space? Does it write over old files when full?
It will save for as long as there is free storage. By default Automatic Overwrite is enabled.

Only thing I dont like is that you have to unplug USB and connect it to a PC. You cant look at it from the Arlo itself while USB is connected

That is the Amazon Echo Dot. I was demonstrating that you can draw power from the base to power the Dot. Unfortunately you're not able to reverse that and have a power bank supply power to the base. Hope that helps.

Arlo no longer gives you FREE CLOUD storage. A Subscription costing up to 14.95 a month is not required after your 3 month free trial time. Steve can you view your cams from your smart phone away from home or do you have to wait and pull the thumb drive and video them on the computer? If so this negates the purpose of having a security camera system. I'm talking my ARLO PRO3 ULTRA which I'm greatly displeased with the Arlo system this is my second one. I'm going to the FREE STORAGE on the EUFY 2C system with no subscription and much better system and cheaper.
wish I can see your comments earlier...arlo is so disappointing, it is completely useless after the 3-month free subscription trial

Is a subscription required in order to use local storage and the mobile application?
So the Pro and Pro 2 come with 7 days of free cloud storage. So you'll always have that. Arlo is working on an update that will let you view data from the external storage through the app. As of right now, you have to plug your external drive into a computer to view what is on it.
I typically go through my footage at the end on the day or sometimes right after it’s recorded and delete the ones I don’t want, if I delete it from my recordings on the app does it also remove it from the external drive or does it always keep it saved on the drive?
Deleting items on your app should just remove them from the cloud and not your external drive.
So after your 7 days of storage for 3 months is that mean you will have to pay for a subscription if you want to storage video data later on?
Yes, if you want to keep recording beyond the 7 free days then you will have to get a subscription to bump it to 30 or 60 days.

Sadly you can only get CVR with a paid subscription.
Is it possible to see the recordings directly from the app?

netgear are a bit fuzzy about using motion sensing, do you know if it needs to be plugged in just to activate the function or must it be plugged in for actually using the function.
I plan on buying those small solar panels to charge it but the one netgear sells is very expensive. did you try it with a cheaper alternative like this one?

No, there is no option to encrypt.
Why does my passport hard drive require formatting? Your hard drive just added a folder. I don't want to lose the stuff I have on that drive.
Hi Richard, basically it comes down to file format of your drive. Arlo uses the Windows based NTFS format. Since your passport is Mac based it's using HFS+ file format. This is why you're being asked to format your drive. It wants to wipe your drive and set it up as NTFS.
@@SteveDOES I have been using the Passport on Win 8.1 laptop. It has worked fine there. Wouldn't that be NTFS (windows based)? Thanks for the reply.
@@richardk7379 Hmm, on your laptop, right-click that drive and select properties. It will tell you the file format there. Regardless, if it's requiring you to format i don't think there is a way around that. You could move all your data off, format the drive, and move all the data back. Not ideal =\
@@SteveDOES just an FYI, I found another Drive laying around. It was formatted with FAT32. I plugged it in and it worked automatically without needing fomating and without erasing any of the files on the drive. Just thought you would want to know.

Yes, it's the same base.
Do the cameras store pictures when motion is detected or 24/7 video?
Not pictures but it stores video when motion is detected. If you want 24/7 recording you have to subscribe to CVR (continuous video recording) to the cloud and that's a per camera charge.
Since you have the external harddrive does it still give you the option to record continuously? Or do you still need the subscription
Continuous Video Recording (CVR) is a feature that you have to subscribe to. Since i don't have it i don't know if having CVR allows you to also record to your external drive. Sorry i can't be more help with this one.
@@SteveDOES I'm just trying to avoid the internet connection, I can set up the home network but I dont have an internet provider atm.
This did come up a few months ago and i asked Arlo about it. They said that the cameras should keep recording as normal without internet. I meant to test this out but forgot. I'll try to test that out this weekend.
I doubt ill get an answer since its been so long but do you know if the base station/smart hub limits you to a total of 2tb or 2tb per external drive? for example could I have a 2tb and a 1tb drive hooked up at the same for a total of 3tb? Or am I limited to 2tb?

How much data is each camera is suppose to use? I’ve had some recordings use 250-400mb!! I have 4 cameras installed in a horse barn with a Nighthawk WiFi hotspot - I’ve had to up the and up to 20GB. From what I noticed every time a motion is recorded it using data to save to the cloud, and my guesses that Data is used to view the recordings as well. If I recorded instead 1 or 2 cameras with a subscription CVR would I be able to view it remotely? Also if I install a usb drive can I view those recordings remotely?
250-400mb seems big for 1 recording. As of now you have to plug the external drive into a PC to view that footage. You can't view it through the app YET. They are working on an update to the app that will let you do that though. Expected to come out the end of 2019.

If you are using continuous recording options does that record to your hard drive as well or just the motion activated clips go to the hard drive?
I don't have the continuous recording feature enabled so i'm not sure. I would assume that it would allow you to record that to the hard drive. If you end up doing it let me know.
