- In this video, I play the great Wes Montgomery song 'Four On Six' and give you some ways to think while you improvise over the cool changes. Soloing over the chord progression is a challenge. I explore ideas for improv and give you insights into how to quickly change tonal centers and focus on consistent ideas that transpose throughout the song form. This thought process will help you with any difficult song that you want to create an "on the spot" improvised solo over. Let me know how you like it and thanks so much for watching!

Great tune. Nice playing.
The changes are based on Summertime so G Dorian is a fine choice. I do wonder why we favour it over other minor options.
I do it too, but I don't know that i ever questioned it. I guess we can play sequences over Gm7 then Cm7 Bbm7 etc that way, and Wes liked his Dorian extensions. I just listened to Wes and tried to imitate the sounds he used and didn't think about it beyond that until now.

Hi Rich... Thank you for sharing this video and for letting us comment. I hear what you're saying regarding which keys to play over which chords. My question is, what is the thinking when choosing which notes of these scales to play, and in which order and duration? For example, at 13:05 you start on a C note. Why there? and why did you choose the subsequent notes? Does that just come with learning licks? Even then... how does one know which licks to play and when. I just can't put my head around it. And please, if I'm so far off in my thinking, please let me know if I'm asking the wrong questions. Sincerely, Dave

@@willibald99Actually- yes. I don’t say that lightly. Wes was obviously first and an innovator and famous amongst jazz guitar nuts but I think Rich is a better all round player. I know you won’t agree.

For me: this guy is really good, but Wes was a genius
@@willibald99 Sure , it’s a personal opinion. Wes did have limitations but I agree he was genius and composed a few classic tunes. He certainly was one of the very few guitar players who commanded respect from the non guitar playing jazz world. Another controversial opinion I have is that I think he would have been a better player if he used a pick in certain situations. Again you won’t agree.
