💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is my 200th video in a row, posting every single Tuesday for 200 weeks!
In this video, I talk about how to play a guitar solo over simple triads and demonstrate different ways to solo over a 1-6-4-5 progression in the key of E.
I just got an email asking about this. Eric says:
"Recently, I'm practicing chord tones, and I'm using a simple chord progression like 1-6-4-5 to master basic major and minor triads.
The simple chord progression with no extensions makes me curious about how to make a beautiful solo over it, since it's very basic with limited options.
If possible, can you please make a video about it?"
The main thing that jumps out at me from this question is saying that simple chord progressions limit our options for soloing.
Harmony can be simple, but our soloing options are never limited.
You can always play anything you want.
In this video, in my typical fashion, I break down several steps for how to play a guitar solo over simple chord progressions.
Once you’ve practiced and gotten comfortable with the harmony and chords, then you can let go, play, create, and express yourself.

So useful - great thoughts that a lot of teachers skip in favor of a lick or a riff. This is how to improve and organize your mind to improve your playing. Could be a light bulb if you're stuck.

Bicentennial Greetings and Congratulations, Jared. Fifty more before 2026 and you will beat the United States of America to the semiquincentennial celebration! And by the way, this was a great lesson on the value of mapping out the chord tones and being able to incorporate them in your playing by: 1) Simply knowing where one is in the chord progession ( / melody); and 2) Using the chord tones in the solo, as needed, to help the audience know where you are in the chord progression (/ melody). I'm going to study my chord tones and get them under my fingers. Thanks!

What I would like to see is how to solo over non-repetitive chord patterns Ike your showing here
An example would be like Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain” where the changes aren’t typically predictable like a 1-4-5 or whatever.

Also, maybe consider playing over unusual chord structures …something like G-Bm-Am- C-G where more creativity is required. Throw in some Maj7’s and some diminished chords too.

Jared you're a great teacher. I'm a older newbie to guitar. I'm just starting to get my Minor and Major scales down. I will be starting Cords and Intervals next. I'm finding it difficult to get my scales to sound like music. Do you have a lesson for that? Thanks.

Perhaps you're overcomplicating things. Simply, to play solo over chord changes, know the chord shapes and try to hit the chord tones at appropriate times, using major scale (also chromatic, or certain modes if sounding right) notes as passing notes. Me, I just try to hit either tonic or third, and limit 5th, using the rhythm to guide spacing.
