    I've had a few to do. The contractor supported the hot water heat lines with a 16d nail. Electrolysis took 30 years to eat through. Now I'm constantly looking. As a follow up to this one, you should do a video on using a slip coupling.

    • @Got2Learn
      @Got2Learn  6 лет назад +1

      Lol, a 16d nail huh...wow! About the slip coupling, I do have a video on that, I think it's called "secret plumber's tricks" not to sure though, but I definitely showed that trick ;)

      Just found one last night. Right under a nail stuck against the joist.

    This is a good video, and I am sure that this would work for a small pinhole repair, and it might even last for years or decades.
    However, with that said, I think this only makes sense in limited situations. Maybe this makes sense if you are fixing plumbing in a rural area and the nearest hardware store requires a drive over an hour and you really need to fix it quickly. Maybe it also makes sense if there are obstructions around the pipe that needs to be repaired that won't allow a conventional repair and you want to fix it temporarily before you have to do a lot of work to remove the obstructions and then do a permanent repair.
    Otherwise, I would repair it with a slip-repair copper solder fitting or (if for some reason it's in an area that isn't easy to solder with a torch) a propress fitting.

    Sand Flux and wrap copper wire around pipe. Regular solder will work and it'll last longer

    • @coreysharp9794
      @coreysharp9794 Год назад +1

      I did this today. No choice, it was the main 3/4 feed from the water heater manifold. Top of the pipe was up against the beam, pinhole on the bottom. I sanded and brushed it, applied Flux and heated it up. Then sanded and brushed it again, re fluxed and hit it with with torch and solder with the most perfect single bead I could have laid. Tried to scrape it off with a flat head it was one with the copper. Tinning Flux probably helped a lot. It's holding and I plan on covering it tomorrow and forgetting about it.

      I'll say I thought of it on the job, I didn't see this video till hours later wondering if anyone else had tried it.

    Not to be a smart aleck or anything but silver solder would be safer, is recommended and would be way stronger.

    • @Got2Learn
      @Got2Learn  6 лет назад +1

      Sure thing!
      Silver solder would definitely do a much better job, but seeing not all construction sites have a "silver soldering kit" (torches and silver) this trick is good. And also, not everybody know the art of silver soldering ;)
      And lastly, seeing this is only temporary, it shouldn't have to withstand much ;)

    Thank you. I have a copper vent stack that has a few holes in it allowing sewer gas to enter house on occasion i might this method. However, the holes are larger than a pinhole. Any other alternatives? I hward something about copper epoxy?

    I like how you state 50/50 solder has lead, but all the pipes in the house are use soldered connections which contained the same lead? The solder is the sealant for all the pipes right?

    Such a convoluted approach, everyone knows that you can just a little Flex Tape for a good permanent fix that will last forever!... .. I'm totally kidding, I liked your video btw!

    How long do you think a repair like that would last, if it was the hot water supply, so under some pressure?

    • @Got2Learn

      A good while, but as mentioned, this should only be a temporary fix 🙏

    Piece of a fernco and hose clamp or 2. We use to cap homes like this years ago: crimp the ends together flux, solder and pray. Now that I have my own company I just buy caps lol

      Dude! A comment from 3 years later helped me this morning. Woke up to a pinhole leak on a copper pipe in my front lawn area. I found this video and scrolled to the comment section and found your comment. I covered the hole with 3 layers of electrical tape and a hose clamp and it sealed it completely (so far). Thank you. -Miami, Fl.

    I’m not a plumber. But I don’t believe that lead in the pipes will so much harm by itself. It would have to be corroded by the minerals or other chemicals in the water supply. There are a lot of places that use lead pipes still. And people aren’t regularly sick from it. Sure it’s better to repair it the right way ASAP, but if it’s going to be there for a day or two you should be ok.

      If anything, try alpha tape, it'll seal the leak most probably, but you'll need to come back and fix it properly very soon ;)

    Screw a small and short copper screw into the hole and solder it, using water soluble flux.

    50/50 solder? Why waste your time? You will have to redo it. News flash: LEAD IS NOT GOOD FOR THE BODY! Hose clamp and rubber is a better quick repair until you can repair it or have a plumber come in and fix it.
