The most disappointing thing about the tascam manual is it not explaining all the routing capabilities but you sir, just made this very clear! Thank you Stefan!
I agree. I've used other, older multi-track recorders and the signal routing on the Tascam 24 is different. It's also misleading since the main bus also serves as tracks 23/24 - which means it's not a true 24 track recorder in that apparently you cannot record on tracks 23/24 which would then make it a 22 track recorder or am I missing something?? it's also strange that the main bus is NOT a master bus controlling the overall volume of all the other faders/recorded tracks. It only controls the overall output volume going out externally to speakers, control room, or say a Focusrite. Never seen it like this on other multi-track recorders.
Their budget probably ran out when writing the manual. Lol. One cool thing I figured out the other day is that you can import you stereo mix down into a new song. Which was a game changer for doing overdubs/simplifying the mixing process.
I agree with Doctor Steve. I too have been confused by trying to follow the manual. To me this is definitely the most direct and useful instructional on RUclips!

Thanks man for going into detail about how to use the FX part of this mixer. I have the Model 16 and use it with my iPad and music apps. AUM and Cubasis works perfect when it comes to assigning channels to and from the mixer and iPad, but the only problem is trying to figure out how to assign midi to record in sync. My only gripe is that I wish that Tascam would have implemented the midi features from the Model 12 on the other mixers too. Again, thanks for the video 🙏🏾
But would you be able to record the reverb and delay patched that way onto the current track? Or would the reverb signals and delay signals only be recorded onto those 17/18 and 19/20 channels? What I'd like to do if I end up getting this is run a looper externally and be able to record loops onto each track of the card.
Using the signal flow you talk through here, could you technically run the outboard effect back into the stereo bluetooth channel using the rca stereo inputs or do you need to bring the outboard effect back in to a channel with the red gain control knob for the effect to be heard? I'm thinking I would rather not waste an open recording channel that might need a mic/line input. Great video!!

This is wonderful and very useful. Thanks for posting this Stefan. Quick question. If I return the effects signal using the mono out of whichever effects box, safe to assume I can "return" it into any mono channel on the board (without having to use paired stereo channels) ie... return to say channel 1 and put the corresponding monitor fader up, along with the channel 1 fader up, and then apply the mon1/aux 1 dial to any other channel's mon1/aux1 knobs?

What if I wanted to send the stereo signal of the whole mix from the aux sends through a 500 series module setup? How would that work? Out of aux mon 1 and 2 and then back into tascam?
Thank you man, i just got one question, what if im sending a stereo signal, for example some pads from my DeepMind 6, the signal that reaches the boss RV6 is stereo or mono?
My question exactly: even if you did send via aux1 and aux2 wouldn’t that be dual mono? Meaning sent from mono channel strips 1-12 using aux1&2 the pan pot has no influence on what is sent to aux 1 or 2. (I guess you could fake panning by sending less to aux1 and more to aux2 but whatev) Similarly, sending to aux1&2 from stereo channels 13/14-19/20 youd get both L&R sent to both aux1 and aux2 no? Or am I dumb? Lack of a true stereo fx send on this board bums me out. Awesome vids nonetheless! Super helpful👍🏻
Hi, I'm probably not alone in looking for the as yet unreleased ultimate stand alone digital recorder mixer without the need for using a computer or DAW option and the Tascam Model 12 or 16 looks very close indeed for my budget. On the older Tascam cassette multi trackers some models allowed the input of external effect pedals for mixing on the fly. I've been using the Zoom R8 to record live instruments including drums and mix up to 8 tracks on an internal master channel, but very tricky to mix on the fly using the internal reverbs and echoes (layered in banks) and virtually impossible to use outboard effect pedals attempted on master mixing or on a single individual track using some headphone output to effect, returning and assigning to track trickery. But it's great to be able to use any internal effect on any track while recording or mixing. Like the Model 24 can this be also done with the Tascam Model 12 or 16 making it possible to record with different internal effects on different tracks (so that the chosen effect is NOT global on all tracks- like it is on the Zoom L-12 for instance) and be able to mix tracks to master track on the fly? Again like what you have plainly demonstrated on the Model 24 can this be done with the Tascam Model 12 or 16 making it possible to use external/outboard effects from guitar pedals to mix onto any track or master mix on the fly? If so how many inserts/ aux sends are possible at one time? Can they be used in conjunction with the internal effects? Really appreciate if you could investigate my queries and share your findings as I'm so close to considering a Tascam Model 12 or 16 purchase and I thank you for sharing this info on the Model 24. Really appreciated.
You can only use 1 internal effect at a time. You can send signal from all channels to that internal effect simultaneously. You can also use all aux busses (orange knobs) at the same time. Please understand that Inserts and Aux sends are not the same. With Aux sends you choose to send signal to something then bring it back on a different channel. With an insert you are “inserting” an effect into the signal flow of that particular channel. Usually sends are used with time based effects like reverbs and delay and inserts are used with dynamic processors like compressor or limiter. I haven’t looked into the model 12 or 16 since I already have the model 24.
@@stefanringerfwm Thank you for your quick response and your explanation of differences between inserts and aux sends. It does seem odd that you cannot use a different internal effect for different tracks/channels and then mix all tracks to a stereo master on something in this price range, which can be done on the little Zoom R8. (?) I was hoping to then add an effect such as echo/reverb that could be received via any track/channel while mixing to master stereo track to create an old school reggae dub tune type of thing without the use of a computer or midi controller as I quite like the lo-fi results and the jamming the mix as it's happening etc. I'm also looking into the Zoom L12 which seems very similar to this Thanks again
I didn't know FX could be bypassed and used as AUX3. Thank you!!
