I use the Model 12 with my Macbook and Ableton. You can move the general output to the stereo channels (I use 9/10) in Mac's Audio Midi Setup -> Configure Speakers. Then in Ableton, just set the Master to output on 9/10 as well. This frees up channel 1 and 2 to use for inputs.

With a recent update, the Model 12 can change the main stereo out from your computer (or possibly the MPC One). Go to USB audio > PC CH1/2> change from the default 1/2 to 9/10 and the output will go do your last fader.

I bought one of these in April 2021. I now mix and record all my gigs with it. The only connection between this and a DAW is when I load tracks from the M12's SD card onto my computer and then open them in Logic for final EQing. The DAW becomes a mastering tool, which the M12 was not intended to be. I believe strongly in getting the sound and performance right, wherever you record to. Think of the great recordings that were done on machines that had nowhere near this capability. Musicians and technicians got it right, in the studio.

I have the MPC Live and the Model 12 and when the MPC firmware gave us access to external interfaces, my mind was blown (your vids have been quite helpful in tackling that integration). As far as upgrading to a Model 16/24, I want to put it out there that the Behringer X32 rack and a X-Control make a formidable semi-compact combo that can handle outboard and DAW duties. I racked up mine with the X-control on a sliding rack shelf, into a 6sp rack, and have all my synths and some outboard gear all connected. You can couple that with the optional SD multitrack recorder card, and you have a sick "all-in-one"...and there are LOADS of effects. If you are patient, you can pick up an X32 Rack for less than a grand (I bought two for work, refurbed by Behringer, for $750 each). The X-Control isn't cheap, but jeeze! Flying faders and crazy DAW control. The X32 will also give you the max inputs on your MPC. Sooooo...just throwing that out there. Thanks for your vids. Very helpful.

    • @TheLordcasio
      @TheLordcasio 2 года назад +1

@@michaels5166 The Focusrite Rednet stuff is pretty popular in studio and broadcast, but it ain’t cheap…actually most DANTE enabled devices are pretty expensive. Audinate (the company that created the DANTE protocol) keeps a rather extensive list of DANTE enabled gear on their website. Keep in mind, you need to buy the DANTE software (pretty cheap) but you do not need a specialty PCIe card for the ethernet.
AVB and MADI are also good protocols. AVB is the newest and most accessible in audio interfaces. There are trade offs, but for music recording, I don’t think AVB has a downside.
The great advantage to any of the three (DANTE, MADI or AVB) is running multiple interfaces in multiple locations, over one cable. Got drums in the basement, vocal set up in the bathroom, guitar amps in the garage and a control room in your bedroom? Then this could be good.
If its just you in a room, it might be overkill.

Tascam recently sent a software fix so you can now move your main outputs to either channels 9/10 or to the main. If you use the main you have headphone issues so I’d suggest using 9/10. Also using this mixer with your Daw you’ll see right off the bat that whether it’s digital for the most part if not it sounds great. Especially when you combine it with outboard gear. Nice video !

I’m thinking of getting the Model 12 to record rehearsals and gigs. Kind of inspired after watching the Beatles documentary to get a bit more done live.
There’s also the Zoom LiveTrak L12 which could achieve the same thing. Has anybody compared the 2 units? My perception is that the Tascam will sound a bit better, but not sure if that is true. The Tascam does look better for live use having physical knobs for E.Q. rather than in a menu.

Just picked this Model 12 up and I love it! I use with a patchbay to route a few pieces of outboard gear.
You have to understand routing with different gear and your DAW routing to appreciate this mixer/interface.
It opens up a lot of flexibility for routing IMO
And the I/O interfacing is straightforward.
It’s not UAD quality but if you are using outboard gear 🤷🏽‍♂️ it’s does the “Do”

I bought one for the same reason -- MPC compatibility -- and it is superb. Then I tried the Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK. Same "interface" for the MPC but without the SD recorder. I ended up returning the Tascam and keeping the Soundcraft. To my ears, it sounded more transparent and I like the weird Saphire EQ. Both mixers are great additions to a small studio running an MPC along with a DAW.

The video is a year old, so this is a bit late, but if you are using the Model 12 as an interface, you can do a post-FX send from the main bus (in Reaper it’s a “hardware send”, I don’t know about other DAWs) to channels 9/10 and then you can use channels 1 and 2, as well as the inserts on those channels. (Maybe someone already said that.)

The inability to record effects to the card is criminal. This could well be a all in the box unit with a few modifications and they wouldn't cost Tascam a lot to do it.
I'm a big fan of their stuff, and even have a Tascam DP24SD, but the Model 24 has been attracting me for quite awhile.
But I would like to be able to do everything right in the mixer and card, if I need to take a break away from DAW recording.
Yes, you can feed an external processor into empty tracks, but that kind of loses the idea of all in one box mixing/recording.
Thanks for taking time to do an honest, hands on review.

That leaves channels 5 & 6 open for mono-synths or a poly-synth, if needed. I use the faders to manipulate my levels in Ableton... I prefer drawing in my automations rather than using faders/pans, anyway, so I'm not missing motorized faders or recall. It's not perfect, but what out there is? The pre-amps are okay... barely capable of pushing an SM7B, but I don't use that mic. I think I'm in the "want a recording set up in a different part of my studio" category. My jam space is in my basement but my production PC (also my day job machine) is in my home office where I do all my in-the-box work and simple recording, but I can't turn into a full-blown studio.
I'm leaning toward getting a Model 12 because it's small enough I can record to it in the basement, where I can have all my gear (especially synths) set up all the time, and either just bring up the SD card or the whole thing to act as a control surface when I'm mixing and doing heavier production; that workflow sounds appealing to me by forcing me to not overly focus on production details in the DAW when I'm getting recordings down.

I’m looking at the model 12 for live rehearsal and band recording, despite my studio setup which is UA Apollo x4 and UA plugins (channel strips, compressors, eq, reverbs, delays, auto-tune, etc.). I have a MOTU 8 pre connected via ADAT giving me 12 inputs in total. I can use the Apollo x4 + 8 Pre for live, but in all cases I’m relying on my M1 MacBook, UA Console and Logic. I’ve used this for live rehearsals and band recording in my studio, but it’s not really a mobile solution. So, I’m struggling with “what do I get with the Model 12?”

I just started using mine for the first time this past weekend... I love it. Took me some trial and error before I figured out all the little button and sliders, and how they all work in unison. I used to use an old drive-based Tascam DP-01. I am realizing, however, that since it's an SD card, I can't cut/copy-paste sections of my tracks like I could on the DP-01. Anyone have any info on that? I don't see anything about cutting/copying-pasting data within tracks in the user manual. :(
I had been using GarageBand to mix my DP-01 tracks. However, I bought this planning to use it for both recording tracks and mixing. Hmmmm....

First of all, thanks again for sharing ur experiences and knowledge, you're truly awesome!
I got a question.. How can I record the changes I did on the tascam EQ or FX during the record of the tracks?
When I hit playback, the changes I've made won't be appearing..
I try to not using a computer or software to complete my songs at all.. I've a mpc + tascam + various instruments setup.. But this last mixdown step, make me feel stuck in a way..
Could u pls explain me how I can get this songs finished without the need of a computer? The stereo mix export file doesn't contain the automation changes I've made on the tascam during recording the tracks..
    With best regards
    :)

I've been experiencing some wonkiness with swapping tracks. I might try to swap track 1 with track 6 but when I listen back, it either didn't swap or another track got involved somehow. Also, if you want to mixdown 4 tracks to a stereo frack, all the tracks that have recording on them will automatically be included in the mixdown. Even if you bring the faders down, it doesn't matter. I've had the Model 12 for a year and I still do not fully understand it.

    Hello sir
I am extremely new to this. Last one I had and still have the Porta 4 cassette. I want get back into.
I'm desperately trying to decide between the model 12 or 32. Midi may or may not be important to me. Like u suggested I found midi dp24 and was ready to pull the trigger on, but thinking that only 8 simultaneous recording and I just don't think will work. Also tacam will not support version 1 anymore.
I do want to get into Floyd style old school synths but with 1/4 I can record w/o issue. And it appears that the 12 midi is pretty limited. Tho, midi could be helpful for backing tracks live.
Thoughts? I like the 12 but after stereo there is no tracks left. And if the midi is not needed then will go more simultaneous.

Model 12 has midi in & Out .
    Can you explain this ?
Is it maybe to work with DAW to controll PC as a sort of remote controller ?
Just clock for the midi equip ? IN case a producer has not its midi clock aready ( hahahaha ) ..
    cheers & peace

How is this as a general use audio interface? My Soundcraft MTK 12 did what I needed it to do (get all my synths into the DAW and also let me jam a bit when the DAW is closed) but was damaged in a move. Wondering if this would be a good replacement.

If you were going to chose a small mixer (8-16 channels) for mostly live work (duo or 4 piece acoustic groups), do you have a suggestion?
I hope to get the best preamps. Good effects, 2 usable aux sends and reliability are also features I'd want.
