The definitive version - clear, engaging, emotionally textured, vocally flawless storytelling.
You captured perfectly everything I would say about this performance, except it is now my absolute favorite performance of this song!
@@jerryedmonson5041 Thanks for commenting; so happy to have received the notification in my inbox, because my soul needed to be replenished by this bit of Liz' brilliance and humanity today. :)
leojbramble I love when the world works in harmony to help one another! ❤️
Just recently saw videos of Alice Ripley's staged performance and Betty Buckley's unique concert version, which are both very different and each amazing in their own ways, but this is still my favorite traditional performance of the song; just lovely.
No one can define a song like Patti LuPone, the originator of the character and the first to sing this song on stage. ruclips.net/video/utxsw-Up9X8/видео.html
0:44 this lead in to "sing" sends me everytime.
Crystalline, emotional, powerful... BRILLIANT. While Patti and.Betty sing nice versions of "Meadowlark," nobody does it better than Liz Callaway. PERFECT!
I was very fortunate to be sitting front row center to witness this performance at Carnegie Hall. Liz Callaway's rendition was jolting! I felt every emotion she conveyed. Vocally and emotionally, Liz was pure perfection. What a talent! Side note: Liz's lovely mother sat behind me. I glanced at her after the number. She was teary eyed and beaming with pride.
That must have been one of the most beautiful moments of glorious sound. Ever.
@@kittmarie8285 oh that’s a voice you can FEEL. How could you not be moved
I love love love Liz Callaway. But the full orchestra behind her gives me goosebumps.
“Fly with me my meadowlark” gave me chills.
Good LORD! This is such a hard song to sing that not many people tell the story. I believed every word and she destroyed the vocals too.
Best version I have ever heard... stunning..
Holy shit...she outdid LuPone. Breathtaking.
That's not hard to do. Patti doesn't sing, she yells. Always.
@@carr0760 It baffles me how she managed to trick the world into calling her a great singer! She's a fabulous actress and has amazing stage presence, but the singing? No thank you, yelling everything while barely forming the words!
@@joshpyman9678 seriously. I don't understand it either.
@@joshpyman9678 do you people just not understand belting
Different takes - Lupone rarely head voice in the climax whereas Liz uses head voice
Lupone “yells” with full breath support and power so actually its a belt, not many can do that especially above D5 notes
Lupone belts an F5 in full voice and sustained later an E5. Liz is softer in her approach and sings in head voice which is less challenging
The cleanest, and clearest rendition of this beautiful song!
I've been having this on replay for 2 weeks now. Liz Callaway's voice is so divine. Her rendition of this song gave me chills on end. Very delicate, her diction is impeccable and you just feel every word, every lyric. She deserves to be heard more.
THIS is her song! I've seen her present it live a few times. Each and every time she brings chills and maybe a few tears. I know she is known for "Baby" "Anastasia" and so much more but THIS (in my opinion) is her VERY BEST!
Such a beautiful song about justifying leaving your husband.
And thank god I did. The sun god and I now have two children and a happy life.
This is the best version of the song. Definitely.
I think the comments section is unanimous in saying that this is the BEST VERSION of Meadowlark.. And I definitely agree! Damn, she meant every word -- and I mean EVERY WORD. For example, in 1:50, she sang "rough and tender"', and she enunciated it like well, it's rough and tender.. Great enunciation and interpretation, plus the orchestra complemented very well on top of this world-class performance! I applaud every single time she finishes the song and I can't even count how many times I've replayed it. LOL
Holy crap...I have never heard anything so perfect
If you weren’t watching the video, you’d think it was a studio recording
Such gorgeous colors. I believe her when she sings.
came here looking for an audition song to use in a few weeks and left with TEARS
Proud to be a fan of both Patti and Liz.
Liz Callaway... Broadway SUPERSTAR. It doesn't get better than her interpretation of "Meadowlark." And her voice... great. Just GREAT! Stephen Schwartz must be proud!
When I was a girl, I had a favourite story
Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind
Her voice could match the angels' in its glory,
But she was blind,
The lark was blind.
An old king came and took her to his palace,
Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid,
And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed
"Sing for me, my meadowlark
Sing for me of the silver morning.
Set me free, my meadowlark
And I'll buy you a priceless jewel,
And cloth of brocade and crewel,
And I'll love you for life if you will
Sing for me."
Than one day as the lark sang by the water
The god of the sun heard her in his flight
And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her
The gift of sight,
He gave her sight.
And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor
Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong
And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender,
"Come along,
Fly with me, my meadowlark,
Fly with me on the silver morning.
Past the sea where the dolphins bark,
We will dance on the coral beaches,
Make a feast of the plums and peaches,
Just as far as your vision reaches,
Fly with me."
But the meadowlark said no,
For the old king loved her so,
She couldn't bear to wound his pride.
So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day,
He found his meadowlark had died.
Every time I heard that part I cried.
And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy.
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb,
A beautiful young man appears before me
Singing "Come
Oh, won't you come?"
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last it's picked the worst time
Still I know
I've got to go.
Fly away, meadowlark.
Fly away in the silver morning.
If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark,
So it's off where the days won't bind me.
I know I leave wounds behind me,
But I won't let tomorrow find me
Back this way.
Before my past once again can blind me,
Fly away.
And we won't wait to say goodbye,
My beautiful young man and I.
Liz Callaway is the finest singer we have on Broadway. YAY!
NOBODY does it better. No one. Period
Best version ever
I can never get enough of you singing this song! like the mix in this performance better than some of the other orchestral versions where your voice is buried too far back. We want to hear you up front! So excellent! Thank you for sharing!
She is an ethereal force! Wow👏
One of my favourite songs. Liz Callaway's Meadowlark is so beautiful.
Liz Callaway YOU SLAY ME! BRAVA! You are the one I tell my students to listen to! You got it figured out! xo
My god! That woman has a voice!
Thia is so perfect! She is either a robot or a beautiful alien!!!! Can't stop listening!
Best version I've ever heard of this song.
Gives me chills every time. Such a talent.

Brilliantly written. Brilliantly sung. Brava!!!
What a song, what a performance. There's something at once accessible and epic about these pipes. It's a pretty remarkable vocal quality.
Shivers! So beautiful!
I want Liz Callaway to play my mom in a movie. Just putting that out there to you God and the universe...
Oh, Liz Callaway...more working actress than star! AND I DON'T KNOW WHY!? She is is glorious.
I get Goose Bumps every time I listen to this wonderful rendition.
I just discovered Liz's rendition and am gobsmacked; absolutely stunning vocally combined with a thoughtful, nuisance's interpretation.
The Hamlet of theater songs. I'm not sure I personally would call hers definitive, but she is certainly up there with the best of them. Epic song, and she has the chops to do it justice. Thank you for sharing.
Dang! What a voice!
Anyone else come here from the Patti lupone video😂😂
Me! And disappointed. Patti is better.
@@daviddye6558 Patti doesn't even come close!
@@joshpyman9678 Patti sang like the character. Liz sang like a disney princess. Context and character matter.
@@rawr3122 ehh I’d argue Disney princesses sound like her. All the other princesses from the 90s were her theater contemporaries in that era. She for sure has a style, but she sang like this on Broadway long before Disney.
Patti is better and more emotional!
I stand in awe of you, Liz! The first time I heard you sing this song, I was hooked. Simply perfection! Thank you!
Simply brilliant. I love your interpretation of this song.
Perfection!
Greatest singer, greatest song

Wow, absolutely effortless amazing
WOW!!!!
Sheer class .
Omg.
You don’t even need to search for the lyrics. Her rendition is so clear! Pattis version, you have to guess what the hell shes saying. Lol.
Perfection!!
