I have to say that Liz Callaway's rendition of "Meadowlark" is, by far, my absolute favorite. Her voice is gorgeous and she captures the song perfectly. Listen to the studio version on "The Story Goes On: Liz Callaway On & Off Broadway"--it's breathtaking.
This is NOT an easy song - especially for a soprano! She ALWAYS knows how to place her voice so it is never overpowering or blowing out her chops. This woman can keep her range until she's 90 if she keeps singing like this! Very inspirational.
She has such a Disney princess voice. Could even imagine Rapunzel/Elsa sing this with the way she's singing it. Very innocent, very hopeful and youthful.
Okay, I don't know if anyone else is RIVETED by the conductor!!! I could watch him all day and find more to admire. He is trly amazing and his energy makes me want to start playing in an orchestra again. love! I wasn't very familiar with Liz Callaway before finding this but of course loved her voice without knowing who she was. So now this is my Favorite version of this song ever! She is delightful.
there is just something so beautifully smooth and effortless about her voice that just makes you sit relaxed and yet in awe all at once. and on such a beautiful song, she sounds amazing.
this was during lea salonga's concert at carnegie hall, 2005. liz was lea's special guest. they are good friends, and they actually sound alike, both have this crystal-clear voice.
What an absolutely exquisite instrument she has. So many colors in this voice--but never forced, moving effortlessly through some very difficult registers. Absolutely caresses the lyric. I was lucky enough to see her do this live.
I saw her live in "Miss Saigon" in 1991 and she really was a vocal powerhouse in "I Still Believe". She includes "Meadowlark" in her recording "The Story Goes On". Two gems that I was not familiar with on this CD are "Sleepy Man" and "A Place Called Home". Her version especially of the latter has yet to be topped in my book.
+Shane Brown I saw her live in Cats during the 90s as Grizabella. Her performance of Memory was as astounding as any I've heard. Personally, I found it better than Elaine's version, but not quite as powerful as Betty Buckley's. Unfortunately, Liz has yet to record a version of Memory on any of her albums. Though, the CD you mention is one of my favorites of hers. She also sings Meadowlark on Sibling Rivalry. It's a little different because it was with a piano alone, but still powerful.
I recently found the sheet music to this piece while cleaning out my room in my parent's home after forgetting the song and then stumbled upon this video. This particular performance has brought me to tears each time I hear it. The writing is exquisite but Miss Callaway does something that just notes on a page cannot - she makes the Meadowlark come alive in front of all of our eyes while we watch both her and the lark transform in a short couple of minutes.
Liz is amazing, patti is the first version i heard of this sond but liz is amazing, but so is alice, all amazing women with a very diffrent voice. thanks to all of them
YAY!!!! i kept looking for this on itunes after i heard it on my friends ipod while we were falling asleep one night, and i couldn't find the right one... she's such a good singer!!!!
I first heard this song sung by Lupone in Chicago. She was the standard, by which I judged other versions. I've gotta say, this one really holds up for me. She's solidly in control of the song throughout. I like the performance by Ripley, too. It moved me to see what was happening to the singer/actor as she used the story of the lark to justify her leaving. Liz moves us with the imagery of the song and the sheer beauty of the voice. they're doing two different things, these ladies--and well!
Bless this Lovely Singer ! This is just the right way to approach the material. Well acted and an exciting mix voice with just enough belt, but none of the screeching and yelling that some of the other girls choose.
Lyrics When I was a girl l I had a favorite story Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind Her voice could match the angels' in its glory But she was blind, the lark was blind An old king came and took her to his palace Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice And he prayed: "Sing for me, my meadowlark, Sing for me of the silver morning, Set me free, my meadowlark, And I'll buy you a priceless jewel And cloth of brocade and crewel And I'll love you for life, If you will sing for me. Then one day as the lark sang by the water The god of the sun heard her in his flight And her singing moved him so He came and brought her the gift of sight He gave her sight And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor Of this beautiful, young god, so proud and strong And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender "Come along. Fly with me, my meadowlark, Fly with me on the silver morning, Past the sea where the dolphins bark We will dance on the coral beaches, Make a feast of the plums and peaches Just as far as your vision reaches Fly with me." But the meadowlark said no For the old king loved her so She couldn't bear to wound his pride So the sun god flew away And when the king came down that day He found his meadowlark had died Every time I heard that part I cried And now I stand here starry-eyed and stormy Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb A beautiful, young man appears before me, Singing â??come, oh, won't you come?â?? And what can I do if finally for the first time The one I'm burning for returns the glow? If love has come at last it's picked the worst time Still I know I've got to go Fly away, meadowlark Fly away in the silver morning, If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark So it's off where the days won't bind me I know I leave wounds behind me But I won't let tomorrow find me Back this way Before my past once again can blind me Fly away And we won't wait To say good-bye My beautiful young man And I.

She's not acting the song, not in character, but I can feel it through her voice.. She's not just singing, she's storytelling.. Awesome..
This song deserves a full orchestra every single time. Changes everything. Good grief. All the chills.

She sings it so much sweeter than anyone else
I love how she almost speaks the song rather than full-out singing it. it makes it feel so much more personal and emotional.
She has such a Disney princess voice. Could even imagine Rapunzel/Elsa sing this with the way she's singing it. Very innocent, very hopeful and youthful.
Not Disney, but she is the singing voice for Anastasia. I think that counts, personally.
Disney bought Anastasia (!!!) so it does!!!! :D
And she did Jasmine in the Aladdin sequels
She also is the singing Voice of Princess Odette (The Swan Princess) and Kiara (Lion King 2: Simba's Pride)

You can really understand the lyrics in her version, which is not always the case in other renditions. Great job!!

Got to hear her sing this live from backstage! She's AMAZING.
The best version of this song I have heard to date. Thank you Liz!!!

She should be a lot more popular. her voice makes me melt!
her voice sounds like flowing water
Sheer perfection; I have to watch this at least once a week.
GORGEOUS.....love the soft way she told the story of the Meadowlark.... she is unique....
It doesn't get better than this. Thank you, THANK YOU, Liz!

This is so elegiacally beautiful; need to hear this at least once a day! Liz Callaway was made for this song and it for her.

Fantastic... I adore this song, it's so wonderful to sing. And she does it brilliantly.
Totally agree - one of THEE best deliveries of this song - timbre, emotion and understanding. Sheer class (as he runs out to find her album).
I've seen Liz sing this live and she is AMAZING! Hands down a lovely lady with a truly remarkable voice.

This is her song. This is Liz's. She fully owns this song. Nothing can convince me otherwise.
Bless this Lovely Singer ! This is just the right way to approach the material. Well acted and an exciting mix voice with just enough belt, but none of the screeching and yelling that some of the other girls choose.
Told the story, as intended. What more can you ask for ?
This is an example of textbook vocal execution, utterly stunning!
I love Liz she is simple amazing and a joy to watch
Now THIS is how the song is sung, Ms. Ripley. Heaven.
I'm obsessed with her voice! I love it!
Now, that's a singer!
Thank you so much for posting this! I just love her voice! And this song is just so wonderful!
One of the most underrated performers....and here she was stunning singing one Broadway's greatest ballads and probably Schwartz's best composition.
She is fabulous!
I am obsessed with her "come a-looooooooooooong"
GORGEOUS vibrato!
Liz is amazing. So emotional and powerful. :)

Lyrics
When I was a girl l I had a favorite story
Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind
Her voice could match the angels' in its glory
But she was blind, the lark was blind
An old king came and took her to his palace
Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid
And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice
And he prayed:
"Sing for me, my meadowlark,

But the meadowlark said no
For the old king loved her so
She couldn't bear to wound his pride
So the sun god flew away
And when the king came down that day
He found his meadowlark had died
Every time I heard that part I cried
And now I stand here starry-eyed and stormy
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb
A beautiful, young man appears before me,
Singing â??come, oh, won't you come?â??
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last it's picked the worst time
Still I know
I've got to go
Fly away, meadowlark
Fly away in the silver morning,
If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark
So it's off where the days won't bind me
I know I leave wounds behind me
But I won't let tomorrow find me
Back this way
Before my past once again can blind me
Fly away
And we won't wait
To say good-bye
My beautiful young man
And I.
I love her voice!
She does this song the best I've ever heard.
She sings Far longer than forever beautifully, I love her as Odette from the Swan Princess.
Sublime....sublime.
My Favorite Meadowlark'

abigguitar *cough Patti Lupone cough*
@@CountryCowboy008 Patti MADE the character. Not a word on her.
No disrespect to Patti, but being the first to play a character doesn't in and of itself merit particular kudos
Her voice is so beautiful :)
2:48 she forgets the words for a moment - and SAVES it! Work girl.
By far the best rendition. Listen to Liz's recording. It makes me think I'm listening to a faerie tale.
this floored me. BEAUTIFUL! :D
stunning
voice of an angel
Her voice makes the perfect princess.
Love Liz-angelic
amazing amazing amazing!!!!!!!
This is my life right now. This song is all I am.
She killed it omg God bless her 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Ahhhh! love this!
Yes, she does!
Doesn't get better than this.
No better live recording of a very difficult-to-sustain song. Yes, Liz. Like that!
THE BEST!!!!
Way to go Liz!
