The 2004 NBA Playoffs Lakers vs Rockets Game 2
In their previous meeting in Game 1, Kobe took only 3 shots in the 1st half. As a result, lethargic play by the Lakers was followed and they were nearly upsetted by the 7th seeded Houston Rockets. Kobe didn't let that happen again. In a very playoff atmosphere, Kobe was very aggressive driving to the rim from the start of the game. He had 9 quick points and challenged every big man the Rockets had to offer. Whether it was Yao Ming, Kelvin Cato, or a backup, their big men had trouble staying in the game as it was Kobe, not Shaq, who drew them into foul trouble.
Despite his efforts, the Houston Rockets hung with the Lakers throughout the first half. Kobe stepped up his play in the 3rd quarter. It began when he made a quick move to the basket and split a Rocket double team and was challenged by Kelvin Cato on a shot attempt. Making a 180 spin and what seemed to be an enternity in mid air, Kobe had his back to the basket and flipped up a wild shot with the whistle sounding. The ball rolled around the rim and somehow found its way into the basket sending Staples Center into a frenzy. It was a start for 17 3rd quarter points for Bryant and it opened up the game for the Lakers. After 2 free throws and a three point jumpshot by Bryant, the Lakers began pulling away from the Houston Rockets. The Houston Rockets never found their game again afterwards. The Lakers won 98-84.
