I've been a fan of the Manta since about 1980 since I saw one in a Custom Painting issue of Hot Rod. I still have that magazine. And then of course Hardcastle and McCormick TV show. Bruce Mclaren's personal car was NOT a montage like this one. Instead it was a 454 powered Mirage. It had a tube frame , independent front and rear suspension. Real race car stuff for the 70s. The Montage and Montage T are based on a VW chassis. This appears to be a Montage T due to the transverse engine. I always wanted to build a Mirage with a 6-71 supercharger sticking out over the roofline and a Porsche 5 spd but honestly a 500 hp LS would make one of these cars go like stink! LOL.

It as cool seeing the Manta and its new owner in Fredericton. He was wearing a faux Mike Hall dreds wig and seemed to be having a ball.

Back in the mid 70's I bought a Hotrod or Car Craft magazine that has a Manta as the featured write up, I will still have that magazine.
But there were 2 different Manta's made, the Mirage(I think that is what you have here, and the Montage. The other one is set up for a longitudinal SBC engine placement, and used a Corvair Saginaw trans and matching diff. It also came with a rectangular air cleaner lid that protruded through the rear deck that says Manta on it, There was one of those at the Boyds fathers day show in K'town about 10 years ago.

I could see that car flyin' down the 2 & 20. It would fit right in, in the French Quarter. I miss Montreal...ah, c'est dommage

AVERY is like a very strange looking book. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. Although he is quite rough around that COVER, there is a whole lot of knowledge put into an under-tall, over puffed-out frame. If something needs to get working, AVERY can and will make it work (AFTER A BUFFET MEAL OF COURSE). GREAT JOB Avery and definitely J. F.
