      Wasn’t there something about criminal charges against the son that may be a motive behind the killing? People in the area feeling he was going to get off scot free because of his father’s influence. Although there now may be more to it than that with this story of embezzlement.

      I think another possibility is he mixed up with bad people got himself in trouble stole fund to pay off debt but it wasn't enough and they killed his family then he missed another dead line and try to kill him or at least scare him. I think this might be the reasoning due to the fact he has no reason to embezzle funds especially since he lawyer and he also apologizes for hurting family members indicting he bears some reasonability or at least in his own mind to the death of his two family members and the fact he enter rehab which could mean the debt involves drugs

      If I had to guess, I'd guess the father shot his own son and wife knowing it'd get him sympathy and knowing he was going to be caught soon. He was the one who "found" them. Then he staged this, because his prior plan wasn't working.
      All just a theory, I don't actually believe that's what happened - but it is a possibility.

      The second makes more sense, I believe he did with no regret perhaps a good Psychology asking the right questions could receive a confession from him. His voice on the phone call to the police has a strong fear on it, this report is missing some facts for sure.

    I'm thinking he murdered his wife and son so his son's trial wouldn't happen. He likely assumed if they were both gone, not just the son, the investigation wouldn't look into him and his family's finances... thus triggering the embellishment stuff now happening....

    Well, after hearing this new info. I'm going to say what everyone is thinking. He killed his own family for the insurance money...to replace the money he took. I bet each member had a million-dollar policy on them.

      Actually the murdered son had apparently been involved in a road death of someone 6 years ago. It’s possible mum was in the wrong place at the wrong time and became another shooting victim. Perhaps justice was just being meted out to the son.
      If the father had embezzled money, I’d be looking at it as a self inflicted wound to garner pity and lighten his sentence.

    The real backstory is that the lawyer killed someones daughter in a boating accident years ago and was never properly prosecuted because of his wealth and power.
    That being said seems like retaliation.
    (Updated) it was the sons fault for driving the boat intoxicated.

    To me it sounds like a completely different set of people that killed the mother & son. Those 2 were executed, a job that they made sure got done. When the father was shot at it seemed like a half-ass attempt despite him being vulnerable. I would think the same guys who killed the mother & son would have been more relentless until they got him.
