- Google Chromecast Music and Multi-Room Audio Setup
The V2 and V3 Google Chromecast devices can now be used as music players in your home through the Google Home application. Not only that, but they can be added to multi-room audio setups, and so what is often your biggest and best speaker in the house (your home entertainment system) can be used with Google Home and the Google Assistant.
This video moves a little quickly through some of the initial setup, but there's a full setup guide on your iPhone or Android device starting at 8:53. Go ahead and skip ahead if you'd like to get details on the setup within the application.
In terms of utilizing V2 and V3 Google Chromecasts to play music, your Cast Firmware version only needs to be Version 1.36 or greater. Once you're there, you're ready to go and you can start choosing that device to play music on. You can choose through the application or you can ask another Google Home or Google Assistant-enabled device to play music on your Chromecast.
Multi-Room audio setup with #Google #Chromecast is nearly just as easy, with you just needing to add your Chromecast to a Multi-Room audio group in the #GoogleHome application. Once that's done, you get to the really difficult task of synchronizing your multi-room audio speakers.
Synchronizing your multi-room audio speakers within the Google Home application is not difficult if you know how to do it. Essentially, you need to find the speaker that is the furthest in the song and the speaker that's the furthest behind in the song. Once you've found those two, you delay the one furthest behind in the song until it matches with the speaker furthest in the song.
From there, it's a simple matter of delaying your other speakers and voila, you're all done.

The fact that you can now add your surround sound system or sound bar system added to your home group with a chromecast is AMAZING! I've known about this for a couple of weeks but the more people who know how powerful a product chromecast actually is will allow this to be a much better world! As always, I'm giving you that thumbs up Brian! Keep it up man!
Thanks Jacob “top Best Buy Employee Ever” Diehl!
I realised this today and I too am amazed. I had most of the equipment already, just needed to get familiar with the home app. I'm going to buy another home and chromecast tomorrow, this is awesome.
Fantastic! Just what i needed ii am doing a total repair for the new house and was looking for a good multiroom system thanks !!!
Enjoy!
This video is so timely for me! I've been using a Chromecast v2 for years and just purchased a Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast Audio during Black Friday that will arrive this week.
I have a Bose SoundTouch 300 soundbar with Bose Acoustimass 300 subwoofer attached to a 2018 65" LG OLED TV. Surprisingly, although the Bose speakers can connect to Alexa, it has no native support for Google Assistant. I purchased the Chromecast Audio so I can say, "OK, Google, play [song title]" to my Google Home and have the music play on the Bose speakers.
I’m glad I hit on a good one for ya Vic! Thanks for everything!
@@AutomateYourLife Off-topic: I saw your response and opened my RUclips app to read it. I then realized I missed about 20 seconds of what you said the first time I watched the video because I heard "One More Light" by Linkin Park and started thinking about Chester Bennington.
Ugh...tell me about it. This was a tribute.
I really want this to work the other way too. so I can play a video on my Chromecast and use all my Google homes and Chromecast audios to play the audio of the video playing on the TV
I’m with ya there. I think we are a bit away from that, but I don’t doubt that becomes possible within the year.
The problem is, it’ll be dependent on the streaming service. Each one uses different methods for the audio/video split.
me too
I hope they work this out by 3rd quarter next year.
The way I got around it, for music at least, is just hooking up a Chromecast audio to my AVR and attaching it to my group.. but the audio quality coming from that Chromecast device is very poor.
Great Review, but I can't get my audio from my beamer (with Chromecast plugged in), wireless, to my speakers. Is there a wireless option to get the audio seperated from the video in (netflix/youtube) and play the sound from a movie on speakers into the room? WITHOUT ANY CABLE FROM MY BEAMER! Hopefully there is already..
Can you use the TV with the Chromcast as a GoogleHomeHub, so that it shows the same things it would on a GoogleHomeHub but on the TV?
I'll tell you that when I have one! Soon!
Thank you for the info. Easy to follow instructions. Congratulations winning the GREY CUP.
Oooooooooh, if only! We didn’t win ;)
Thanks Brian. Some good info there.
Thanks Ron! Hope it helps!
A little help tip for the DELAY settings...... The device closest to the router is the fastest (needs to be delayed).... The device furthest is the last to get the audio signal..
Thanks for the video. How do I set up my TV audio to go throughout the whole house. For example, if I'm watching a RUclips video on my TV, how do I have the audio play through chromecast connected speakers throughout the house and basement?
The only real way I've done it is through a connected Home Theater Receiver. ruclips.net/video/QBLtrUMUtRo/видео.html
Looks like message says that delays in audio can occur "in groups" OR "Bluetooth". On Chromecast devices the message says only about "groups" and not Bluetooth, because Chromecast doesn't support Bluetooth audio.
Correct!
Automate Your Life so my dad has a Samsung sound bar. In order for him to have his chromecast play sound through the tv and sound bar, you can’t Bluetooth? You would need red and white cords or is there a hdmi splitter option?
Great vid and information
Great video. Cheers mate 👍😊
Oh thank you!
Thanks you for this, I’ve done it!
Good!
If I have my Chromecast plugged into my receiver, is there a way for the music to play without it turning on my TV?
That's going to be a TV and receiver setting thing. Tough for me to guide you, but I have made this happen only once ever!
@@AutomateYourLife do you know what brand of receiver it was?
@@bradthom7 did you ever figure this out? I want to do this sense Chromecast audio is discontinued.
@@floyd27860 I did not. I just use my Chromecast Ultra into my receiver. It turns on my TV which is no big deal.
I have a philco tv that is not smart and a jbl soundbar. When I connect the chrome cast to the TV the sound comes out through the TV speaker, would it be possible for me to put a chrome cast audio on the jbl soundbar and synchronize the sound of the two on the cell phone?
Sure! If your JBL has the input option for a chromecast audio. But also...only for music not video
Has the chromecast ultra definitely been updated to work too? I want to buy that but only if it definitely works.
I had read that it did some time ago, but I can't officially confirm as I don't have one.
@@AutomateYourLife bought one today, $100 and it doesn't function as a groupable speaker, pretty disappointed. Now I'm at the mercy of google to decide if they want to add that functionality anytime soon.
Take it back! Maybe it's on an old firmware though.
@@AutomateYourLife the annoying thing is though, it's attached to a 4k HDR TV, I really don't want to use a regular chromecast. It's great in all other ways so i think I'm stuck waiting for the functionality to be added.
@@AutomateYourLife what the heck?! I just checked and somehow it decided to start working as a groupable speaker overnight. I guess it could've been a firmware update but it did an initial update when I set it up. Otherwise maybe it was just one of the hiccups we're getting at the moment. Either way, I'm all smiles now :D
Once you've paired the speakers together can you decrease the volume separately? So for example volume 25% in the kitchen and volume 50% in the living room? Like sonos
You can do it physically on each device, or in the Google Home app. Actually, you can do it in many apps!
My question does it work with Android TVs with "Chromecast built in"? Because to doesn't show up.
I think you have your answer, although I’d expect this in the near future for most Android TVs
@@AutomateYourLife Yeah same in my set up, however I'm pleased that as of this week my Google Home Mini can now switch my Sony Bravia android TV which it previously couldn't, I've not added any additional assistant apps/skills to enable it though
Aashay Tambi yes
Hopefully soon. Because all my house sound system can be powered by 1 app finally.
Do you need a google Hub to be able to connect all the TVs? I'm trying to do so with my smartphone, but it isn't finding all the devices including a Vizio chromecast tv
There have been lots of issues with Chromecast on TVs. You’re likely running into that :(
I made groups today 2 google home and 2 chromecast its awsome
Niiiice!
Does the synchronization works with Spotify and RUclips? If it works, can I connect a bluetooth speaker to the google home and still plays in a group? Thanks!
Hey Jon - Spotify, yes. RUclips videos, no. RUclips Music, yes!
And yes you can with Bluetooth - There are sometimes synchronization issues but there is a way to fix that.
@@AutomateYourLife Thank you so much for the really fast reply! Thanks again!
Can you turn the TV off though
Hey Google turn off living room tv works for me. Had one tv that could play music while the screen was off. Look at your settings
Hey how would you set up a chromecast to a speaker setup not a TV speaker system? Since these can work in audio groups now I was thinking of hooking one up to my speaker system in my room. What would I need to make it work since?
In other words make this a chromecast audio alternative since I can't find any for a decent price anymore.
I think you're asking how to add the Chromecast to a music group. Sorry, not entirely sure but it's really easy. Create a new group by hitting the plus and then find your Chromecast :). Add in whatever other speakers you want and you're done
@@AutomateYourLife I was saying about plugging in the chromecast directly to the speaker. Since it uses hdmi what else would I need to make it work?
It doesn't output just sound, so as long as your speaker could process that....
I honestly have no idea. I'm interested to hear you try it.
@@A_guan assuming you figured it out by now but there should be audio outputs on the back of your tv. If your speakers don't have a built in amp you need to buy an amp and some speaker cable.
What they are asking is exactly what I want to know!
Chromecast audio is now discontinued. I want to use the chromecast Gen. 3 plug in to my AV receiver (I just want to play music thru my stereo). The reciever has a HDMI input I can use.
Am I able to do this (music with no video/screen)?
Can Roku be used for music as well...since its available on "home"?
Not that I’m aware of, at least not in the manner I’m showing
Hi I am trying to connect Sony Bluetooth headset to Google home app on my Android phone. I don't own anything else except a Google Chromecast v2, no hubs or mini. The Home app doesn't pick up my headset at all. I want to cast to my TV but have the audio come out of my phone's jack or Bluetooth headset.
Chromecast V2 doesn't have Bluetooth, and I'm pretty sure you couldn't get this going with a V3 or Ultra anyways. At least not with another device as a BT transmitter out of the TV. It'll also have a delay...sooooo....
I understand what you are saying. But I am casting off my mobile phone. Surely the mobile phone audio could play instead of the TV audio. My mobile has Bluetooth. Then all I do is sync the video and audio.
I have a question about using Goolge Chromecast Audio for multi-room audio. I'd like to have multi-room audio, with voice control in each room. Can the speaker and Chromecast be linked together so if I ask google to play a song, it will automatically play via the Chromecast audio, or does would I still need to say "Hey Google, play (xxxxx song) on (xxxx chromecast) " ?
Good question! So you can set Chromecast Audio into groups and as the default speaker for any Google-Assistant enabled speaker or display! They really were so very useful...I still don't totally understand walking away from this device.
@@AutomateYourLife I was just doing some extra research. Maybe now they have audio built into the normal Chromecast Google just consolidated it into one product.
Trouble is, you'd need an adaptor to convert HDMI to 3.5mm analogue.
I'm trying to watch RUclips with Chromecast but at the same time I want to have my galaxy buds connected. The video on RUclips is playing but the sound isn't.Basically I just want to connect my galaxy buds to my Chromecast but I don't know how... Can you help me?
So the understanding I think you need here is that Casting sends both the audio and video to the device. You can't therefore connect Bluetooth to the phone and have the audio come out there. You've already sent the audio to a different place! So try connecting your BT buds to your TV if you can...but I warn you, there's likely to be an annoying delay.
@@AutomateYourLife ok thank you for the feedback. Keep it up with the great videos 👍
Sony TV reach their synchronization point at 153mm.
Does it stream lossless music. Many thanks.
Sorry, I don't even have this one anymore to try. I believe the new versions can
So I tried to make a group and all my devices are not popping up. what should I do now? My Chromecast won’t pop up. I followed all your instructions to make a group but I had to stop there because it won’t work
So just in the app? You mean on the home screen? If you do, make sure your wifi connection is good between your phone and of course the devices.
If wifi is weak around that could be it. They could also be interfered with by other devices using 2.4 GHz wifi nearby
I just did a speed test and I get roughly 700 MB per second
Yeah I just in the app.
Your network speed externally is one thing. If you get close to your Chromecast with your phone, is the wifi signal strong?
The other thing that sometimes happens to me is because I have a wifi extender. It takes a couple seconds to refresh the devices and/or sometimes I find it never finds them. You can pull down the app on the home screen to refresh too and that sometimes helps.
Beyond that, I’d be chatting with Google Support!
How can someone (me) Cast analog audio from a vinyl record player to my google home group? The player has RCA out port and a USB audio out port. Is there something I can plug the audio into and then chromecast that audio to my google home group speakers?
Well, there are a few Chromecast Audios out there still. So you could grab one and convert from RCA to that 3.5 mm
You could also go to Bluetooth, but I don't think that's nearly as good an experience since you'd only be going to 1 device.
I’m trying to link my google chrome cast & my jbl link to where my tv plays movies while the audio comes out either my jbl link or both my link and tv
Not a feature of those devices, sorry
How to get sound from Chromecast (TV) for exampel youtube or Netflix to a google speaker?
You can’t at this point.... Sorry Nicolas. Not with any synchronization at least.
I have been watching dozens of videos to try to find if that's possible, , , thanks for let me know that it's not yet possible 🤣
Maybe possible if your TV has a bluetooth connection then u can just connect the TV with the speakers (Sad that mine doesn't have)
Is there a way to use Google assistant and broadcast to chromecast.
I don’t think you can...but I haven’t tried in a while. The problem is most TVs would have to be powered on and then the whole system would have to wait for that...
How do you adjust audio delay?
You can only adjust audio delay within groups, but it's in the settings/audio for the chromecast.
Not possible to use multiroom with the mibox?
I don’t have one to test, but I don’t think so no.
My chromecast isnt showing up when I wanted to group it up... why is this happening 😢
Is it an old V1, or maybe it hasn't been updated in a while?
Does not work on vizio built in chorme cast
No, that’s not expected. Just V2/V3 Chromecast
@@AutomateYourLife thanks. Ok u maybe can help with this one when i ask google to show weather on my vizio chorme cast it shows utube wheather video
Me. Too. Something is up with their visuals on Chromecast
Sadly it doesn't seem to work on the nvidia shield tv either. Shame.
Sonos?
Not in this way. You saw last week’s right?
@@AutomateYourLife Sorry no didn't see it... just that the mutiroom setup with all of your Google devices was terrible. All sorts of audio sync issues is pretty much a non starter surely?
It worked fine at the end....
Sonos and Google Home Setup and Working Together ruclips.net/video/20lFWrBi6Qc/видео.html
Oh cool I'll check it out. This is topical in our house right now, as we've tried using google home with an audio chromecast into the line in on the sonos speaker, but the chromecast seems to be always sending a signal even when no music is playing. This means the sonos won't auto switch to the line in as it thinks something is already there anyway. We got a cheap gen 2 echo dot yesterday, added the Sonos skill and bang, full voice control with Alexa over all our Sonos speakers. No line plug or anything else required.
Basically.
I'm so glad you have done this video as I was struggling with this exact problem so I'll be attempting to get that setup tomorrow, now I just need to figure out why 2 device's can play different music at the same time, as the first device tells me it can't continue as another device is playing music, which is annoying due to having kids wanting to play there own music, my one thought is to get the family pass and see if that works, so any help there would be great, keep it up dude
Two homes :)
Set up a second home for your kids. Put their GH in it, and then yes, you’ll likely need a family plan.
