  • Use Your Google Home With Your Home Theater Speakers
    If you're wondering how to connect existing Home Theater speakers to your Google Home and then control them, here's how you do it. This becomes a great option for anyone who also has speakers in your wall or in your ceiling that are existing and haven't been integrated with your Google Home speaker groups.
    The receiver I purchased is the Onkyo TX-NR585 with Google Chromecast. It's here (affiliate link): geni.us/0V73uA (Amazon)
    The critical parts here was that it was a wired or wireless (I can choose) receiver with Google Chromecast and integration with Google Assistant. Any receiver with those components will work, but mine was relatively inexpensive for a 7.2 system with 2 zones. I love it, and it's also Airplay compatible, which my wife loves.
    Your #GoogleHome and your #HomeTheater system are a match made in heaven, and this is what Google was planning all along. Enjoy!

    The Echo Input is currently on sale for $19.95 (04/21/2019) and is much better suited to AV system integration because it has a 3.5mm audio out jack for direct connection to an AV receiver. Of course, if you are already invested in the Google home world, it's not going to do you much good. If not, it's a much more efficient way to go.
    BTW - Great explanation of Google integration.

      Best to use optical audio input on your home theater, it makes a difference, the Chromecast audio used to have and optical output.

      @@AutomateYourLife The Input works exactly like the Dot. The only difference I am aware of is the absence of a speaker on the Input. The Input is not a casting device like Chromecast.

    This is a great video Brian and it helped me a lot! Thanks!! I wanted a better sound in my living room and keep using all my existing Google Nest speakers across my home for multiroom instead of replacing with Sonos, Heos, etc. Lagging across speakers was a concern so I followed your advice and got a barebone Onkyo TX-NR474 with Chromecast built in and it is working like a charm.
    As a side note, I have tested a Chromecast 2nd gen dongle in the HDMI port just to check if there was a lag... And indeed there was some lag... Maybe it can be corrected using lag correction settings but I didnt bother :). Cheers

    What if I want to cast to only zone 2 in a receiver, have you seen this as an option that will allow me to ask Google to cast to zone 2 the primary zone (without the receiver remote)?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 года назад +1

      I haven't seen that as an option. I had to change my receiver to that zone if I wanted to do that. You could do it with an IR blaster like SwitchBot or another that you're familiar with.

    I have the Onkyo TX-NR656. It worked great for this and as part of a speaker group. Two days ago I upgraded the firmware and it messed up the speaker timing. Now music plays on the receiver approximately 300ms sooner on the receiver than all my other devices/speakers. Since the max adjustment Google let's you adjust is 200ms, this update messed up a great setup. I have tried everything to get it to work including using a different network. I am calling Onkyo to see if there is a way to go back to my last rev. Casting to the receiver still works great, but not as part of a speaker group. I am sure Onkyo will fix with the next firmware rev.

      Oh my...well I won’t be updating then, but thanks for your comment!

      I called Onkyo and they said there is no way to go back to a previous version of firmware. They also said that they have not been getting reports of this so don't know if this is an isolated incident. The latest firmware is very new with updates for Airplay 2 so most people probably have not gone to it yet if they ever will. I may have to stop using the built-in Chromecast and buy a Chromecat ultra or find a Chromecast Audio somewhere. Hopefully the next rev of firmware will help when it comes out. I did try everything I could think of to make sure it was the receiver including using another router to create another separate network and resetting to factory settings.

      Hi Gary, thanks! So...my Kitchen speakers are a single Google "speaker" in the Google Home app, so sadly you can't split them out. You'd have to change modes on the receiver to do that. I have wall controllers too to help with splitting my speakers.

    Hi!
    I know this is an old video, and no recent comments.
    But, I thought I'd see if you would respond to me anyway.
    (Good video though)
    I have a question!
    I have two google home maxes that I have paired up.
    They sound great!
    But I'm wanting to add more speakers.
    I have some older good speakers, but they are from an older system that I have not used in many years.
    Not Bluetooth or anything like that! Lol
    I now want to add them to my 2 google maxes if it is possible.
    But these are WIRED speakers.
    Literally.
    The speaker has the screw tabs where you tighten a bare wire or loosen it. To connect or not connect.
    You know what I mean?
    My question is...
    Is there anyway I can connect them to my google home maxes?
    The google home has an aux port.
    I bought an adapter and plugged my wired speaker into the aux port of the google speaker.
    That doesn't work.
    Everything just stops playing. Shuts off.
    I thought it would work.
    Why have an aux port for sound if it doesn't work?
    Anyway... is there anyway you can help me?
    Jon

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  5 лет назад

      Hey Josh - So this one works with 2 Zones (specs). You'd need 2...per the specs! However...what I'll say is that I'm trying to use it to do a similar thing. I'll let you know if it works out, but it would mean you couldn't have a 5.1 or something around your TV itself and then control the 4 zones. You'd have to basically just connect the 4 zones (provided you have enough wires).
      I've been able to turn on and off the receiver, but mostly just through asking it to play. The receiver itself would turn on if you asked it to play.

    • @joshkautz848
      @joshkautz848 5 лет назад

      Great thanks, I'm not concerned about the 5.1 as we have another rec for the tv. Just wondering if you designate each channel of the 5.1 as its own zone, and if so can they all play on their own and all at the same time.@@AutomateYourLife

    Thank you Brian for inspiration and your feature finding tutorials. The ceiling speakers are just the ticket for 'invisible' sound. I want that.
    Let's just say running cable from a receiver is tricky and let's just say that the sound we want to share comes from the TV whether it's showing a satellite channel or streaming service. (We''ve seen this in hotel rooms where say, you can still keep up with the news or the film that's playing in the bathroom or kitchen). In 2020 I can group my Google gadgets and play Spotify anywhere in the building. Have you any thoughts on how an Android TV could send TV sound wirelessly outside of the TV room?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 года назад +1

      Hi Kartik - That's going to depend on your receiver entirely. You're looking for this to attach to your TV?
      If you had an optical out of your TV, and a Chromecast sitting in your TV, you could go into your Receiver and then have it control speakers like that. I used to do this with an older speaker set on one of my TVs. Look for what inputs your receiver has for sound from a TV and then you'll find your solution.

      That one's just a Bluetooth connection. The special thing about some receivers is they have a Built-In Chromecast or Built-in Cast. That's what you'd need to connect it in.
      You could connect it to a speaker through Bluetooth though, I'm sure.

      Click the gear icon at the top right to access settings for the Google Home Mini speaker.
      Select Audio -->Select Default Music Speaker-->Select Pair Bluetooth Speaker.
      Pair the Onkyo Receiver with the Google Home Mini. (Follow the instructions that came with the Onkyo Receiver)
      Select Groups and add the Google Home Mini speaker to your Home Speaker Group, that is, if you want to do that.

      The real question is...does your receiver switch inputs when it starts to get a signal? You could control it a couple different ways then. For example, you could power on the Chromecast through a smart plug. I also wonder if you could cause your TV to switch on based on the Chromecast providing video. See, whenever I ask something to play on my Chromecast plugged into my TV, it switches my TV input. I would expect your receiver to do the same.

    Hi Brian! Thanks for the video! I have 4 pairs of (non-smart) Polk Audio ceiling speakers that are wired to a central location. Would this receiver allow me to control each pair of speakers separately via Google Home? Thanks!

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 года назад

      Hey Marissa, This specific receiver didn't support switching between the 2 zones with your voice. Now, there are a LOT of IR controllers out on the market that could give you that command capability. So that's how I'd do it I think today (if I still had that house)!
      SwitchBot has a hub mini that has an IR controller, and so does Broadlink. Those are probably good things to try at this point!

      @@AutomateYourLife I am pretty green when it comes to tech, so just wondering whether this would work: would I need to buy an IR speaker selector (i.e.: www.amazon.ca/OSD-Audio-ATM-7-Speaker-Selector/dp/B004Y8MH3M) and then use the SwitchBot mini hub as the connection to Google Home? And if I did this, would the SwitchBot allow me to control each speaker separately via Google Home? Or would you suggest something else altogether? Thanks again for your help - really appreciate it!

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 года назад +1

      Hey Marissa - so SwitchBot's hub mini would work just like any remote you have when placed within view of the receiver.
      So it would go like this: Google command to turn on Zone X speakers - SwitchBot Hub -> Shoots IR signal to Receiver -> Receiver changes to those speakers
      The link wasn't working for what you sent there, but that would work instead of the receiver I showed here too if it fits the connectors/speakers you have! :)

    You seem to gear most of your videos to IPHONE. I feel sure that there are more ANDROID users than there are IPHONE. Sometime you say that you will later in the video tell more about how to do it in ANDROID but whatever you later say is pathetically short. I do not mean to say that I do not learn from and enjoy your videos very much because I do. I would just like to encourage you to attune your videos a bit more to ANDROID.

      I think really when you think about it mate they're all based on the same thing or though you are tied down to Apple in which I hate so Android is always my favourite because you can do what you like with it
      But as you say Brian does some great videos and they're based around the same thing I mean this guy works tirelessly to provide us with the latest information so he has a lot to get through and I'm sure Brian eventually will talk about Android but I really can't see a difference in the software when it comes to Google home anyway buddy have a good day:-)

      Yes, I was worried when I bought my Ultra because I had no confirmation that the feature had been added to it yet but if you're wanting it to show up as a cast device to be added to speaker groups, yes it can. As a speaker group cast target though it only works with music cast apps like RUclips Music, not standard RUclips.
