@brett at 2:22 you say the brick is 5 amps and 1.5 volts. Its 5 volts and 1.5 amps. You can use any brick that outputs 5 Volts. So amperage will needs to be high enough to deliver enough power. Amperage will adjust it selfs to the needs of the device. If you were to connect a 10 Volts brick you would frie the chromecast. I think most usb power bricks have a 5 volt output but i would check it anyways before hooking it up. You dont want to burn down your house ;)
@@ahammedyaseen1580 it's not the same. Using a 5 volt brick on a 1.5 device would be a serious fire hassard. Don't ever over volt devices beyond their limits
I literally just caught this myself :D Everything USB is at minimum 5 volts to prevent overvolting (amperage amount doesn't matter as much), devices like MacBooks that use a higher voltage have some pretty nifty tech where the device first 'talks' to the charger to determine that it is actually safe to supply the full 9v/12v/ whatever the device wants
I love my Anker stuff and I swear by it, I've had a battery and chargers from them since 2016 and they all work well, I can still charge my switch once and phone like 1 and a half times from the battery, and that charger cable never failed me and is one of the most durable cables I've used tho when I first got the other cable it was acting up but works so it may just have been my device

This is an extremely detailed and helpful video. My set up is a Tivo Stream 4K (very similar to CWGTV) with an extra USB-C port. It gets power from a micro USB port. My hub is an ESHOWEE with one ethernet, one HDMI, one SD card, one micro SD Card, one USB-C Power delivery and two USB 3 ports. I connected the hub to the USB-C port of the device. I tried a 32GB SD card a 16GB micro SD card and two USB flash drives, a 32GB Sandisk and an old 8GB Corsair. Like Tech with Brett, I can confirm that the TS4K recognized both flash drives and didn't recognize any of the SD and micro SD cards. I didn't try the ethernet port or any hard drives. The most iteresting part of this video, besides what works and what doesn't, was the power supplies. I tried two power bricks the weakest one was an 18 watt, and everything worked fine. Maybe the TS4K requires less power from the hub because it uses its own power adapter, so a regular 10 watt power brick might work, but I can't confirm this because I didn't try it. Thanks again for such a nice video.
At 2.4 A at 5 V the maximum output is 12 Watts ,so it doesn't matter if it's USB C or not.The higher wattage and voltage is for a charging Protocol where faster charging times are achieved by putting higher voltage at lower Amps that's creates less heat and requiring the same wire gauge as used by most smart phones, some computers and some batteries.
Random question: Should it matter if USB C Hub has 100w or 87w USB C PD? Isn't the cable's amperage (3A or higher) or the power brick more important? I'm kinda confused about that... Why does the USB C hub have to support 100w PD?
Heat is the reason. If the hub is inline with a 100w device. Then the hub must be capable of managing the heat generated from an amperage draw that high.
Likely your external storage is formatted as NTFS but for Chromecast needs to be formatted as exfat. USB thumb drives are usually formatted in fat32 or exfat automatically for compatibility, but larger drives tend to get formatted as NTFS to better support the larger size. If you take those drives back into Windows and reformat them as exfat they should show up in your Chromecast and then be useable for media payback or internal device storage.
@@TechWithBrett honestly I couldn't say with certainty. I don't think the Chromecast OS would take advantage of anything NTFS offers anyways. ExFAT is just a way to get around the size limitation of FAT32 is my understanding. So other than that limitation it functions most for compatibility over performance or security. I've been using ExFAT on a large SSD with my Nvidia Shield and haven't seen any issues whatsoever.
Functionality can be further improved, by including audio Downmix to stereo and DRC (dynamic range compression) off options, when multichannel audio content is played and sent to other audio equipment via Bluetooth.
I would like to let you know that the PD doesnt mean that the device can power others with type c, it actually is a power standard that came out a while back to allow usb type c to output upwards of 100w through the cable/connector.
the reason the card and drives aren’t showing is because of file system compatibility. the sdxc card and t7 ssd are pre-formatted in exfat and the hard drive is probably ntfs. most usb thumb drives are pre-formatted to fat32 which is limited in some ways but has the most compatibility. android phones usually support exfat drives natively but it recently came to my attention that the google pixel phone has this capability intentionally disabled, probably because google wants to push its paid subscription cloud storage service which is noted with the closing of the free google photos storage, (the reason for me to test that). this is most likely also the case with the chromecast and you might be able to get around it by re-formatting the drives to fat32, although you should first note its limitations and would need to temporarily offload any files on the drive that you don’t want to delete.
I was able to get a 1 TB Samsung T5 SSD drive to work. You need to delete the portion on the T5 in "disk management" (Windows 10). Plugging back into the hub will give you an option to format. Then it works!
Reason why the Duo video doesn’t look good on the TV is because your TV is likely a 4K while your front facing camera on your phone may not be able to capture video at that resolution. Using the rear facing camera that’s capable of recording video at 4K may work, though actual video quality may depend on video compression used by Duo.
Very useful video. Was about to give up on my brand new ORICO typeC hub, until I got through your power supply explanation. Using a 45 watt charger from my Chromebook fixed everything. Ethernet + expanded storage is a basic requirement for me Thanks

Great video. The only thing that bothered me a little was when you mentioned the wattage of the power bricks, you can have a power brick that is 40v 100a, the Chromecast will only operate that brick at the 5v rating. Mainly because it doesn't support Quick charge or similar technology.
Random question: Should it matter if USB C Hub has 100w or 87w USB C PD? Isn't the cable's amperage (3A or higher) or the power brick more important? I'm kinda confused about that... Why does the USB C hub have to support 100w PD?
6:29 That happened because the usb c dongle you used only supports 150 mbps ethernet. It can be seen that he used the maximum of his capacity because upload is symmetrical to the previous test.
Maybe your issue using the SD Card and SSD has something to do with the file system or the amount of storage that's compatible with the Chromecast. Maybe re-formatting to exFat or Fat32 might help.
I was able to get a micro SD card to work on mine but you have to format the memory card on a computer or Chromebook to fat32 first and then the Chromecast will recognize it to where you can format it to the Chromecast

Finally a way to have a webcam and make videocalls on the TV!! I would love to use this with my family on the other side of the world. It's a pitty that we can't use pther apps, or receive a call while watching, as the Duo app needs to be open...
Watched your excellent vid 👌 used the translate subtitles in Dutch. Bought the Anker 7-in-1 USB C Hub on Amazon (NL) and the Translon 65 watt charger. I'm connected now with the LAN and don't get connecting errors anymore what I had before with the wifi. I stream only the Viaplay (formula 1) and Amazon Prime. added the storage, and yes, only usb sticks 2.0 (FAT32) working, but it is expand with 32 Gb. The Translon 65 watt charger gives only that wattage, the chromecast wants.
If you aren't getting great speeds from the gig ethernet cable, its a flaw in the USB hub. Perhaps its not creating a separate subnet so it drops to the lowest denominator (100mb probably) for all devices. (this is the equivalent of using an ethernet hub vs an ethernet switch) There are other videos where different USB hubs were able to deliver way faster speeds than what you got from your test. If you have a choice between a cable or wireless and there aren't any enough differences between the two to make a difference, the cable is the less prone to error and is the best choice.
Just because I dig options (and because I'm cheap), I can run music, pics, and video off a jump drive through the USB3 port on my SONY Bluray player wired via HDMI to my TV without any additional cost(s). And as an aside, it also plays DVD's. Doesn't expand Chromecast storage, but does accommodate much of the functionality you covered here.
Does google tv dongle support connecting other video inputs via the dongle? For example connecting Nintendo switch via hdmi input on usb c dongle and selecting the hdmi input to display within google tv interface? Thank you
Glad you found it. I am currently using the official Ethernet adapter and my speeds have been around 300mbps which is much better then when I did my first tests.
@@TechWithBrett oh ok. On the video you had better speed with the dongle but I will check and see which one is better. I am trying to find a way to get a more steady internet connection while playing.
My boyfriend just bought the new chrome cast and the Anker dongle, earlier this year we both purchased the anker fast chargers too. With that said I was helping him set up the chrome cast and dongle last night and we used the anker wall charger to connect it and it still said there is not enough power. I don’t understand what could be going on could it be the google chrome cast wire? We even plugged it into the wall itself and a power strip we have and still the same results. 😕🙁
Thanks. I noticed you did not turn wifi off when using ethernet. Would your speed be faster if you turned off wifi? I know that sometimes with both connected t can cause slowdowns.
Amazing! How did you manage to connect a SD Card. My Chromecast only shows a message similar to "SD Card has been correctly removed" even when it is still plugged. Another problem I had is that I selected my pendrive as removable (in order to conect it to pc and CCGTV) but now google TV apps only have reading permission, not writing.
This is the limitation, this video have 1 year. After few month I tried and no more works. I think the Chromecast firmware update remove the SD card and USB external connection. Now is very very difficult to get access to external sd or USB flasdrives. 1 in 20 is your chance after reset chromecast. Even if you get access After reset or simply restart the TV your connection can be lost. "Congratulations" to Google
Outstanding and very informative video! I have had this Chromecast w/Google TV for a while, now that I just watched your video, I am going to order a couple things from Amazon and start enjoying it. TY!!!
I’ve already watched like 5 of your videos. Thank you! Your videos are so helpful! I’m learning so much on how to make my home a smart home and which devices would work best for us.
I've got a Chromecast w/ GoogleTV and have hooked it up to a USB hub with power delivery (pd) and am using an SD card as extended internal storage. I've migrated most of my apps to the SD card. The thing is, sometimes the SD card randomly disconnects (like once every few hours), and I have to manually remove it and put it back in for the Chromecast to recognize it again. It's not a power issue, because I never got the "low power" message, but just to be sure, I bought a power adapter with higher wattage, but still have the same problem.
Does anybody know how big of a storage drive you can actually add to it. In other words how big can you make it with it still actually working for the additional storage. Thanks so much for the help. I figured that the speed is the only 2.0 I might as well just get a 2.0 with the biggest size I can get maybe or I could get a three.0 I don't know we'll see.
Excellent question. I'd like to know that as well. If possible, I'd like to have my entire digital library downloaded in best quality on an external drive so I wouldn't have to worry about losing quality while streaming
Great video. Do you know if that webcam works on Dex? Im using new Samsung tablet as main computer. When Im on Dex and using external monitor Im trying to connect a web cam to have eye contact on Skype or duo calls, but no success, no web cam recognized.
Could You let me know is it possible to play 4k movies from external memory or drive(kind of blue ray highest quality files around 60gigs or more). Would the HDR and Dolby Atmos works ?
@techwithbrett, have you tried putting a usb mic on the type C hub, so that the sound quality for the call is louder and better? Or will it still use the camera’s mic for a google duo call?
Worth noting, you cannot WRITE to external storage with the Chromecast. So don't get too excited about all those extra USB ports, SD card readers, etc. Reading works fine, but you cannot write because Google chose not to implement Storage Access Framework.
Thanks Brett for the great tips and TechDoctorUK (who I'm also subscribed to) as well! You guys make it easy to get the most out of your Chromecast TV. I wish I hadn't cheaped out initially and tried the UTechSmart hub (which was $20 CDN cheaper) which kept losing ethernet connection even with the Anker 45w PD. I returned it today and when I got back, the Amazon package with the Anker hub you recommended was sitting by my door waiting for me. LOL Now if Google would just fix the damn intermittent audio dropouts on surround sound! Anyone else experience this?
Based on this review, I got myself a Chromecast (Black Friday had a great deal!), and it's better than my experiences with the Amazon Fire Stick and Roku combined.
I've got a chrome cast connected to my home network. I can scroll through the network directories to access digital media. Using USB storage via USB hub...I wouldn't have thought about doing something like that. That's neat.
@@jaycorbin5361 Personally, I’m glad they didn’t. I don’t use Ethernet so I’m glad they didn’t bulk up the Chromecast to fit a port. If I ever need it I can use a dongle. Keep it small and simple.
Hey Brett, webcam video quality in this video was much poorer than your previous video that also showcased Google Duo. Did you figure out why? I've got a C920 and it looks like crap using Duo
just recently stumble across an Anker 9-in-1 with 4K HDMI dongle and it had a USB-C power plug on sale for $50 CDN. All I did for the power source I just unplugged the USB-C from the Google Chromecast and used that for the power source to the dongle and all good. It too had the internet port. Now I can use my mini wireless keyboard and charge it as well. Do I need all those extra ports and such, not really, but the price was right.
Anker is definitely the mvp brand of good price to performance/features ratio. Been using them for many years, they seem to be good at everything they do.
Quick question. I was reading that some hardwired ethernet adapters will cause the Chromecast with GoogleTV to lose network connectivity after updates/soft reboots. Requiring a hard reboot (power cycle) to restore ethern connectivity. Have you experienced this at all?
I do have to say that the chromecast is quite a cool little device. I currently have a smart tv but I might pick one up when my tv inevitably gets outdated
Good to know about the hub affecting keyboard and mouse use. I am a bit disappointed that the hub I bought won't work with my chromecast w/tv. Hub works fine with my laptop. Next thing I hope to find / test is an RDP app that can connect to a MS RDP gateway.
@@TechWithBrett Hi. I have been trying to do video calls on my chromecast with google tv, via google duo, but have been facing some issues. The microphone on the chromecast remote doesn't work i.e. others can't hear me during call but I can hear them. I have allowed the mic permissions for the app and even though the mic works flawlessly with google assistant, it doesn't work with Duo. I even unplugged my webcam, restarted the device and the tried to do just some voice calls but still same result, the mic on the remote doesn't work. I have searched on Google and some answers came up saying that you can't use your remote mic for video calls, but then I see RUclipsrs like you having no problems whatsoever. If you can help that would be awesome! Plus my webcam's video quality is a bit blurry compared to when I connect it to my PC.
Do all the Chromecast models still allow anyone on the same network to basically "jump into" anything you're casting and watch whatever you're watching? And also control from their phone anything through the casted device? I couldn't believe that was possible and that they weren't password protected somehow.
I did mine on day one this came out and best thing I ever did worth every penny to buy the extras parts you get a good Andriod box and can have lots of Add-ons
I wish this guy made videos about every single topic in the world. He is so thorough in testing and explaining everything easily. Props to you.

thank you brett, very informative, i bought the new chromecast after watching your previous video, this video has so many useful information, file browser, speed test via web browser, file transfer from chromecast to card, didn’t know we could so much with the chromecast. so many things to try out after watching this video
It really can do quite a bit for such little amount of money. Glad this was helpful!
THANK YOU FOR THIS ⭐️
i just filled up my chromecast (same model as yours) with only Disney+, Netflix and HBO Max. I went ahead and deleted the RUclips app on there too just to have a bit more space.
Going to buy what you showed here. thanks again
So what brand of usb hub is the best.for. the best potential of ethernet cable
Thank you
LOL! Just found this video regarding my question on your other video. Awesome job man and again thank you for taking the time!
I legitimately came here to get some tutorials, and i ended up getting rick rolled. WELL DONE!
me too
Same here!! It does not work!!!!
Damn son, I learn so much from your videos. Great ideas thank you 👍
Thanks. I noticed you did not turn wifi off when using ethernet. Would your speed be faster if you turned off wifi? I know that sometimes with both connected t can cause slowdowns.
Extremely cool video Brett, I had no idea that Google Chromecast was so capable. All the best, Rob
I don't understand why TV manufacturers don't include more USB ports in their products. Hell, even the earliest USB-era computers had at least two.
Man, I can't wait to waste my whole weekend setting all of this up.
Your awesome Brett! I've added magic to my chromcast with your awesome tips! Family impressed! :)
The stock Nintendo Switch dock power cord and the Genki Covert Hub both provided enough power.
Awesome review. Just came after watching Tech doctor UK video.
You guys are genius.
Has anyone tested any other cameras or is there more or less universal support for the most common brands?
I bought Logitech 925e, it doesn't work.
I guess if IT works for Chrome os, IT might work
Liam's to bed early last night to see you too
Hi to work tomorrow morning
I can appreciate a dude with a cord that has paint on it. 2:28
I think the chrome cast is a solid device.
I used his links and still have low power. Did not work!!
It seems to me. That the Chromecast doesn't show storage unless its format into Fat32. exFat and NTSC dont show up.
it doesnt show up for me even with fat32 format
Didn't know you could do all of these things with the Chromecast it's really cool! Now I just wonder if you can connect a USB DAC/AMP to it.
Could You let me know is it possible to play 4k movies from external memory or drive(kind of blue ray highest quality files around 60gigs or more). Would the HDR and Dolby Atmos works ?
I'll do some testing. The largest file I have is 24GB. I think this might be dependent on the files browser app you use.
@@TechWithBrett Please reply. I also want to know whether it works. many thanks....
Thanks! I had heard you could do this but wanted the deets. Used all my storage and can't do much with it as is!
@techwithbrett, have you tried putting a usb mic on the type C hub, so that the sound quality for the call is louder and better? Or will it still use the camera’s mic for a google duo call?
Were you able to figure this out?
Worth noting, you cannot WRITE to external storage with the Chromecast. So don't get too excited about all those extra USB ports, SD card readers, etc. Reading works fine, but you cannot write because Google chose not to implement Storage Access Framework.
Come here to watch a how to video, to see if the Chromecast is something I want to purchase. And I get bloody Rick Rolled. Checkmate Brett. Checkmate.
Hi, do you know if I can use an adapter usb c to p2 and connect that to my speaker or even use and hub with p2 port included?
Thanks Brett for the great tips and TechDoctorUK (who I'm also subscribed to) as well! You guys make it easy to get the most out of your Chromecast TV. I wish I hadn't cheaped out initially and tried the UTechSmart hub (which was $20 CDN cheaper) which kept losing ethernet connection even with the Anker 45w PD. I returned it today and when I got back, the Amazon package with the Anker hub you recommended was sitting by my door waiting for me. LOL
Now if Google would just fix the damn intermittent audio dropouts on surround sound! Anyone else experience this?
I was able to make a perpetual free energy machine by following this video.
Wow, great video! I really liked the level of detail you shared. This is the best Chromecast with Google TV video I have seen.
Based on this review, I got myself a Chromecast (Black Friday had a great deal!), and it's better than my experiences with the Amazon Fire Stick and Roku combined.
The usb 2.0 external hard drives needs a app to recognize NTFS partitions
So if using external hard drive with 3.0 .. it will recognize right?
I've got a chrome cast connected to my home network. I can scroll through the network directories to access digital media.
Using USB storage via USB hub...I wouldn't have thought about doing something like that. That's neat.
I got rickrolled
😂, 😂😂
Me to
You can pair up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse in the remote settings.
A micro sd card slot on the Chromecast would have made more sense.
Yeah that would have been nice.
I just wish they went with a slightly different design so they could've put in Ethernet.
@@jaycorbin5361 Personally, I’m glad they didn’t. I don’t use Ethernet so I’m glad they didn’t bulk up the Chromecast to fit a port. If I ever need it I can use a dongle. Keep it small and simple.
3:23 - Are you sure that dongle can stand having 11Volts up it?
2:30 "Now lets take a look at a dongle" BOOM Demonitized.
Careful adria richards may gets you fired.
Hey Brett, webcam video quality in this video was much poorer than your previous video that also showcased Google Duo. Did you figure out why? I've got a C920 and it looks like crap using Duo
9:09
ah yes I see you're a man of culture
just recently stumble across an Anker 9-in-1 with 4K HDMI dongle and it had a USB-C power plug on sale for $50 CDN. All I did for the power source I just unplugged the USB-C from the Google Chromecast and used that for the power source to the dongle and all good. It too had the internet port. Now I can use my mini wireless keyboard and charge it as well. Do I need all those extra ports and such, not really, but the price was right.
Your wifi test killed me. In Australia I've got like 40 download and 5 upload 😭 and we invented wifi too. Imma cry
I should probably stop complaining about my 35 upload then...
Bluddy Pommies , check out the Ethernet 7 cables
Well that's better than in here
Philippines
Bad luck bro. Mine is 98 down and 20 up. All comes down to how far you are from the node etc
40 down is good in Australia. I've had 18 down for 6 months...
Stupid Turnbull, doubled the cost and halved the delivery. The OG NBN was much better.
Anker is definitely the mvp brand of good price to performance/features ratio. Been using them for many years, they seem to be good at everything they do.
Got Rick Rolled in a tech tips video. I'm not even mad 😆
Quick question. I was reading that some hardwired ethernet adapters will cause the Chromecast with GoogleTV to lose network connectivity after updates/soft reboots. Requiring a hard reboot (power cycle) to restore ethern connectivity.
Have you experienced this at all?
2:25 you wanted to say 5 Volts and 1.5 Amps 😂
Sorry, numbers are hard.
Ran that back twice to double check what he said!
I do have to say that the chromecast is quite a cool little device. I currently have a smart tv but I might pick one up when my tv inevitably gets outdated
The SD card would have worked if formatted to FAT32.
Good to know about the hub affecting keyboard and mouse use. I am a bit disappointed that the hub I bought won't work with my chromecast w/tv. Hub works fine with my laptop. Next thing I hope to find / test is an RDP app that can connect to a MS RDP gateway.
10/10, very informative Rick Roll.
Nice titurial. 2:40 But please check out what Power Delivery function is. It is not about sharing power.
Sick! You a genius bruh.
Btw... 2nd!
Too bad wireless DeX doesn't work with the Chromecast. That's why I'm buying an AnyCast M9 Plus hoping it has support for Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).
Haha! Thanks for the title help.
@@MegasXLR what does wireless dex work with firestick
Great video! Can you tell me if the Chromecast can play MKV files from the HDD as I noticed you played MP4
Already doing this but still watching to see what else I missed
Trolling technique highly approved, well done, good form
I love it when a tech guys try to sound cool by adding weird words that their kids made up let’s hook the cloud to a hairy dongle
I liked it when he said 1.5 Volts and 5 Amps, that made my day.
I did mine on day one this came out and best thing I ever did worth every penny to buy the extras parts you get a good Andriod box and can have lots of Add-ons
My chromecast is Family Room TV also 😂
Dang, this video is so thorough and rich with tips and tricks I had to like and leave a comment!
8:55 *YTS.AG* Ma guy!! 😏
😁😁😁😁
Seems organized and clear, but really you jump around between power supplies, apps and options quite a bit.
