I'm new to this world and I've been trying to find a simple 101 information about how it is different to that Chromecast thingy in grey or the old Chromecast USB stick, but every other content creator things people just know... I would like to see Google add two things to their device capabilities: 1. For users, like myself, who have multiple chromecast devices throughout their home, I would like to see them add the ability to 'change device' when you tap the cast icon. For example, if I'm casting to the TV in my living room and I'm headed down to the garage, I'd like to be able to tap the cast button and transfer my cast to the garage TV rather than having to disconnect and reconnect my cast and then resume my video. It's a small detail, but it would be something that I would use often. 2. I would also like to see Google add the option to use your handheld device for audio while casting. Similar to roku's headphone jack on their remotes. I often watch TV in bed while my wife sleeps and I'm hard of hearing. Having the option to use my Bluetooth headphones connected to my phone while casting video to the TV would be an amazing upgrade. I don't know if people from Google watch your videos, but they should. Thank you for your service, sir.
If you have a google home/nest speaker (or maybe just the assistant), you can say "Hey google, play this on [living room tv]" and it will take whatever is playing and move it to that device. Ive had it work with RUclips, Netflix, Spotify, but it doesn't seem 100% supported as the assistant will complain that Twitch cant do that, so there are probably more holes than that.
@@SkyFluff224 thank you for the reply. I've also noticed that the home mini (Google assistant) seems to be the only way for me to get a RUclips Playlist to shuffle while casting.
@@BoomChild74 any reason why you don't just connect the Bluetooth headphones to the tv? Easy enough to find a Bluetooth adapter if your tv doesn't have Bluetooth. They are only like 20 bucks here in Canada (so like 15usd)

@@BoomChild74 actually, after watching a few videos it seems that this new chromecast had Bluetooth built in. So you should be able to just connect your headphones directly to it.

Thinking about your dad, I can imagine that when he was a kid, they had the rotary dial on phones that likely hung on the wall. Now look! He's playing with apps during a video call! He saw Star Trek in black and white and to see where tech is in his lifetime must be awesome! He went from an era where you had what, 3 or 4 channels and a cinema to a phone that allows him to watch whatever, whenever! That's pretty kool.

Did you connect your Chromecast to a projector? If so, how did you get it to read the hard drive? My projector is not reading my hard drive, which is exFAT formatted. I tried to connect using the Android OS (not the projector OS) and exFAT/NTFS for USB app but that didn't work.

Thank you for this! My first gen Chromecast was dying so it prompted me to buy the Google TV Chromecast. I just got it a couple days ago and I absolutely love it. It's hooked up to a very old, non-smart TV that I refuse to give up because Chromecast changed the game for me years ago. It has everything for me to turn any display into a smart TV, so it saves me hundreds of $$. I just thought of trying to get Duo to work on it, so this helps a lot. For $50 this Chromecast is a steal.
What is your take on these Everything videos? Are they too long or do you like seeing every little detail and having the options to click on specific sections you want to watch? Thank you for watching! Note: Google Duo will let you receive calls if you have the app open on the Chromecast.

Brett, tysm for your channel! I know I’m commenting a year after this video was created, but I have stuff in my head. I love my chromecast tv! I also have Apple TV in my bedroom and I was using both Amazon Fire TV (box not stick) and roku on my living room tv. I hooked up chromecast on a loop w/ my samsung tv and samsung soundbar. The settings for the remote are the only thing that took some effort. You can only assign one device to the power button, but I did figure out a way that works. If anyone is having issues w/ that, the home button will wake up the chromecast so you can assign the power button to your tv. The ONLY other issue I have is that it frequently has issues loading YT and will either show the buffering wheel or on the YT home screen it won’t load the content. Where there should be a thumbnail, is a blank placeholder. I’ve tried everything from clearing the cache, updating the app, deleting the app, and all the modem and router resets, and the suggestions on google’s help page. I now know it’s not an issue w/ my wifi or wifi equipment because I replaced my router with Nest and it still has the loading issue. I’m going to move my tv soon and I was going to connect everything through an ethernet switch. But then I realized chromecast doesn’t have an ethernet port! Guys! What do I do?! Help me! What I really wanted to share is that the reason I bought chromecast is because I was in the process of trying to decide which smart home system to use, including a mesh system. Since I have apple tv (a homekit hub) and fire tv w/ a couple random Amazon devices, I thought I should try chromecast so I could sample a little from each of the smart home players. And using chromecast nudged me toward purchasing a nest mesh for wifi and I love it so much. Sometimes I also hate it and want to murder the assistant, but that’s just the way puppy love is, right? For real, the learning curve can be incredibly frustrating, but we’re getting there.

I don't have the Google chromecast with Google tv BUT I do have the onn full hd streaming stick with Google tv. It was 15 bucks and it does exactly what that Google one does. I use it all the time and I love it, and my onn Google TV stick still gets updates, it actually got one two days ago!

You are one of the few RUclipsrs who’ve really covered all the bases in a review. You should really be the “Unbox Therapy” level RUclips channel instead, deserve many more subs.
I think I will be swapping out my fire 4k sticks for this. This is much less restricted than Amazon's offerings. 4k stick was the best at the time, but I feel this has eclipsed it. Especially the integration with Google home. Google home seems to be a little bit better than Alexa from Amazon.
This video was really helpful and made it super easy to compare to our TiVo Stream 4k, which actually has all of this functionality as well. TiVo Stream also has universal search, a universal watch list that integrates across streaming services, and a Google Assistant button and mic in the remote so they're almost identical. And TiVo does 4k/Dolby and HLG. The main thing Google seems to do a bit better is being able to add stuff to a watchlist from other devices. With our TiVo you have to do it in the UI of the device. This was helpful to see how similar they are and that I really wouldn't benefit from the Chromecast over the TiVo other than tighter integration into Google Home and Nest cam...in fact it'd be super cool to see you do a feature comparison between the two because they're so similar!

Works fine to, watched your vid, bought the Anker PD USB-C 7 in 1 hub, but for power, bought the Translon 65 watt with 100 watt C cable. now LAN connected, fantastic connection. The storage also fine, found older 2.0 usb stick with FAT32, formatted with the Chromecast and works excellent. 👌
I felt the same about upgrading my nexus player, but since Im getting the nest doorbell camera , I figured hey, it would be cool to see who's at my door on the tv with the new chromecast. I love my Nexus player , but it stopped security updates back in 2017. That was my only issue.
@@romanrussell4165 I have Nest hubs in pretty much all my rooms for my Nest Hellos. It is a bummer about the security patches but for the Nexus devices its not like I have them interacting with random Internet traffic so the risk is pretty minimal
That's what I'm doing. The Nexus Player is getting long in the tooth and having to sideload the Prime Video app every time it needs an update is a pain in the ass.

Thank you for the excellent in depth review. I was wondering if this can automatically switch framerates? For example, in the UK our content is 25fps/50hz but I'd also need 30fps/60hz for US shows and 24fps/hz for movies. I see all these options in the Display menu but it would be a pain to have to change these for each type of content.
U gotta use the right apps that do that. Only the shield does it properly from what I've seen. Tivimate and an IPTV service is probably what u need. It does the frameswitch in the app for u so it doesn't have to be device only feature.
PhillyDjHook Yes, I understand that Netflix pays for that. That’s irrelevant. Google could have declined the offer and gave us a programmable button that would cater to all users instead of selling advertising on the customers remote. That’s all I’m saying. 🙂 Also, there are plenty of people in 2020 who still use buttons on a remote depending on the situation. 😉

I'm curious is it possible to switch tv's but not need to set everything up again? Like for example going on a vacation with it so u can pair it with the tv you get in your room and hotel wifi and then going home and using it on your main TV again
"Hey Google, please update the Android TV remote app!" It doesn't even support anything beyond 16:9 screens rn smh. Give us universal mouse or track pad support as well.

Great video, Brett. How would you rate the functionality of this device vs the Roku Ultra? Seems to be similar capabilities, with the addition of Google Assistant (which is a big plus)....
I would say smoothness and Google integration is the best part about the Chromecast over Roku. Roku does have have some features that this doesn't (like playing audio through remote or app) and such that still make the Roku pretty useful.
I ordered mine the day it was released and FedEx has held it at their local shipping center for a week. They keep giving me the runaround. I'm NEVER gonna get it 😢
If it's been at your local shipping center for a week, they have lost the package. Request refund. FedEx is the worst. I have had status - on truck for delivery, for 2 or 3 days. If they don't have enough packages to deliver in your area, they don't send the truck out.
@@johntierney3353 it actually finally showed up today but there was a sticker on it about being mis-sorted or something. It took several calls to get them to do something. They kept saying it was delayed due to the wildfires, but their own tracking said it was in my city, so that was just an excuse. Yeah, FedEx is the worst.

Not sure how many other people have tried the usb hub. I had the same power issue and just wanted to share that I only had to step up to an 18W power supply (I think the Chromecast with Google TV supply is 15W). This may vary depending on the hub. Mine was a simple usb hub with power delivery, no HDMI or anything else.
Also, the hub will allow you to expand the storage via USB flash drive, or some hubs might have a microSD card slot you could use for that as well. Another RUclipsr showed how you can run some emulation applications w/bluetooth controllers and having the extra storage for the games is a nice addition. I also plan on trying out wired controllers using my hub. So far, a pretty fun and versatile device!
I must update my comment about this device! I purchased this device and it is INCREDIBLE! I LOVE IT! The voice remote is amazing! 1000 times better than the Comcast remote! I only have Internet/WiFi and no more cable TV! This has more than made up for it! It's just like having cable without the outrageous bill! THE BEST INVENTION EVER! To hell with Comcast!😁👍
Great - thanks! The "APPS ONLY" mode does seem dumb, but if you have other people using it - like children, in an AirBnB, etc. it would be good to turn that on to keep people one step out of changing things.
The new Chromecast is actually quite a wonderful solution to a number of issues faced by people. Smart it already is, I see it a great seller in the American market.

Thinking about your dad, I can imagine that when he was a kid, they had the rotary dial on phones that likely hung on the wall. Now look! He's playing with apps during a video call! He saw Star Trek in black and white and to see where tech is in his lifetime must be awesome! He went from an era where you had what, 3 or 4 channels and a cinema to a phone that allows him to watch whatever, whenever! That's pretty kool.

Did you connect your Chromecast to a projector? If so, how did you get it to read the hard drive? My projector is not reading my hard drive, which is exFAT formatted. I tried to connect using the Android OS (not the projector OS) and exFAT/NTFS for USB app but that didn't work.

Thank you for this! My first gen Chromecast was dying so it prompted me to buy the Google TV Chromecast. I just got it a couple days ago and I absolutely love it. It's hooked up to a very old, non-smart TV that I refuse to give up because Chromecast changed the game for me years ago. It has everything for me to turn any display into a smart TV, so it saves me hundreds of $$. I just thought of trying to get Duo to work on it, so this helps a lot. For $50 this Chromecast is a steal.

Brett, tysm for your channel! I know I’m commenting a year after this video was created, but I have stuff in my head. I love my chromecast tv! I also have Apple TV in my bedroom and I was using both Amazon Fire TV (box not stick) and roku on my living room tv. I hooked up chromecast on a loop w/ my samsung tv and samsung soundbar. The settings for the remote are the only thing that took some effort. You can only assign one device to the power button, but I did figure out a way that works. If anyone is having issues w/ that, the home button will wake up the chromecast so you can assign the power button to your tv. The ONLY other issue I have is that it frequently has issues loading YT and will either show the buffering wheel or on the YT home screen it won’t load the content. Where there should be a thumbnail, is a blank placeholder. I’ve tried everything from clearing the cache, updating the app, deleting the app, and all the modem and router resets, and the suggestions on google’s help page. I now know it’s not an issue w/ my wifi or wifi equipment because I replaced my router with Nest and it still has the loading issue. I’m going to move my tv soon and I was going to connect everything through an ethernet switch. But then I realized chromecast doesn’t have an ethernet port! Guys! What do I do?! Help me!
What I really wanted to share is that the reason I bought chromecast is because I was in the process of trying to decide which smart home system to use, including a mesh system. Since I have apple tv (a homekit hub) and fire tv w/ a couple random Amazon devices, I thought I should try chromecast so I could sample a little from each of the smart home players. And using chromecast nudged me toward purchasing a nest mesh for wifi and I love it so much. Sometimes I also hate it and want to murder the assistant, but that’s just the way puppy love is, right? For real, the learning curve can be incredibly frustrating, but we’re getting there.
Wow. I happened to wander in looking for reasons to buy the new Chromecast.

I don't have the Google chromecast with Google tv BUT I do have the onn full hd streaming stick with Google tv. It was 15 bucks and it does exactly what that Google one does. I use it all the time and I love it, and my onn Google TV stick still gets updates, it actually got one two days ago!

You are one of the few RUclipsrs who’ve really covered all the bases in a review. You should really be the “Unbox Therapy” level RUclips channel instead, deserve many more subs.
I think I will be swapping out my fire 4k sticks for this. This is much less restricted than Amazon's offerings. 4k stick was the best at the time, but I feel this has eclipsed it. Especially the integration with Google home. Google home seems to be a little bit better than Alexa from Amazon.
This video was really helpful and made it super easy to compare to our TiVo Stream 4k, which actually has all of this functionality as well. TiVo Stream also has universal search, a universal watch list that integrates across streaming services, and a Google Assistant button and mic in the remote so they're almost identical. And TiVo does 4k/Dolby and HLG. The main thing Google seems to do a bit better is being able to add stuff to a watchlist from other devices. With our TiVo you have to do it in the UI of the device. This was helpful to see how similar they are and that I really wouldn't benefit from the Chromecast over the TiVo other than tighter integration into Google Home and Nest cam...in fact it'd be super cool to see you do a feature comparison between the two because they're so similar!

Works fine to, watched your vid, bought the Anker PD USB-C 7 in 1 hub, but for power, bought the Translon 65 watt with 100 watt C cable. now LAN connected, fantastic connection. The storage also fine, found older 2.0 usb stick with FAT32, formatted with the Chromecast and works excellent. 👌

Hmmm is it time to upgrade my Google Nexus Player?
If it ain't broke don't fix it. But my Nexus Players gave up the ghost a long time again.
I felt the same about upgrading my nexus player, but since Im getting the nest doorbell camera , I figured hey, it would be cool to see who's at my door on the tv with the new chromecast. I love my Nexus player , but it stopped security updates back in 2017. That was my only issue.
@@romanrussell4165 I have Nest hubs in pretty much all my rooms for my Nest Hellos. It is a bummer about the security patches but for the Nexus devices its not like I have them interacting with random Internet traffic so the risk is pretty minimal
That's what I'm doing. The Nexus Player is getting long in the tooth and having to sideload the Prime Video app every time it needs an update is a pain in the ass.

I didn't see a browser on it, does it have some version of Chrome, my Firestick has Amazon Silk and you can use a version of Firefox too.

Thank you for the excellent in depth review. I was wondering if this can automatically switch framerates? For example, in the UK our content is 25fps/50hz but I'd also need 30fps/60hz for US shows and 24fps/hz for movies. I see all these options in the Display menu but it would be a pain to have to change these for each type of content.
U gotta use the right apps that do that. Only the shield does it properly from what I've seen. Tivimate and an IPTV service is probably what u need. It does the frameswitch in the app for u so it doesn't have to be device only feature.

Netflix pays to have it don't be a programmable button. But you should have the Harmony Hub anyway. Who uses buttons in 2020?

I would say smoothness and Google integration is the best part about the Chromecast over Roku. Roku does have have some features that this doesn't (like playing audio through remote or app) and such that still make the Roku pretty useful.

I ordered mine the day it was released and FedEx has held it at their local shipping center for a week. They keep giving me the runaround. I'm NEVER gonna get it 😢
If it's been at your local shipping center for a week, they have lost the package. Request refund. FedEx is the worst. I have had status - on truck for delivery, for 2 or 3 days. If they don't have enough packages to deliver in your area, they don't send the truck out.

They kept saying it was delayed due to the wildfires, but their own tracking said it was in my city, so that was just an excuse. Yeah, FedEx is the worst.

Can you screen mirror with iPhone with AirPlay?
Not sure how many other people have tried the usb hub. I had the same power issue and just wanted to share that I only had to step up to an 18W power supply (I think the Chromecast with Google TV supply is 15W). This may vary depending on the hub. Mine was a simple usb hub with power delivery, no HDMI or anything else.
Also, the hub will allow you to expand the storage via USB flash drive, or some hubs might have a microSD card slot you could use for that as well. Another RUclipsr showed how you can run some emulation applications w/bluetooth controllers and having the extra storage for the games is a nice addition. I also plan on trying out wired controllers using my hub. So far, a pretty fun and versatile device!
This, ladies and gentlemen, is how a proper tutorial is done. It is the benchmark.

The "APPS ONLY" mode does seem dumb, but if you have other people using it - like children, in an AirBnB, etc. it would be good to turn that on to keep people one step out of changing things.
The new Chromecast is actually quite a wonderful solution to a number of issues faced by people. Smart it already is, I see it a great seller in the American market.
The volume control connects to your TV via HDMI-CEC, not infrared.
