  • An excerpt of a quarter peal of Spliced Treble Bob Minor rung at St John the Baptist, Shottesbrooke on Saturday, 1st June 2024.
St John the Baptist, Shottesbrooke features a ring of six bells cast by two founders: Ellis I Knight in 1634 and Mears and Stainbank in 1964, presumably recasting some bells. Together, these bells produce a pleasant and punchy sound with the aid of a prominent spire. They ring exceptionally well and are notably one of the easier sets of six bells I've encountered. I wholeheartedly recommend them for both quarters and peals.
St John's Church stands within the grounds of Shottesbrooke Park manor, constructed in 1337 by Sir William Trussell, the lord of the estate. Originally part of an ecclesiastical college, the church supported a small community including a warden, chaplains, and clerks. A remnant of its collegiate past is a small door in the south wall, once connecting the church to the chaplain's residence.
Legend surrounds the church's construction, with tales suggesting Sir William Trussell's reformation from a wild lifestyle prompted the building of St John's. Known for its fine Decorated Gothic architecture, the church boasts a spire reminiscent of Salisbury Cathedral. The spire's weather vane, erected by a courageous brazier named Dicken Smith, became a local tale after Smith's tragic fall from the spire while toasting the king with ale.
Inside the church, visitors can admire several notable features, including the canopied tomb of Sir William Trussell and Lady Alice Trussell, and impressive 14th-century memorial brasses. The church also houses a 14th-century font and other historic artifacts, making it a fascinating visit for history enthusiasts.

They are nice sounding bells and the ringing was very good, a joy to listen to just as it should be.
