- This time a bird's eye view of the bells from the walkways at the top of the tower. ;^)
Guildford Cathedral is a very modern Cathedral by British standards, having been started in 1936 and finished in 1961 - during the lengthy construction, Holy Trinity in the town centre served as the pro-cathedral until the cathedral proper was consecrated and blessed. It was designed by Edward Maufe (who designed the extensions at Bradford Cathedral in Yorkshire) in the Art Deco style, with heavy Neo-Gothic motifs throughout the structure. It overlooks the city of Guildford from its prominent position up on Stag Hill and is a very striking and impressive building, despite the modernity.
The Cathedral has a 30cwt ring of twelve bells cast by Whitechapel of various years - 1961, 1963, 1965 and 1975. The bells go absolutley brilliantly but due to the use of concrete, triple layer of wooden flooring and brick in the tower coupled the huge Liverpool style belfry, they are quite difficult to hear properly. You can make them out, but it's quite hard!
I remember being there with my old man in the 60s.
He hung the original 10.
RIP Dad, I miss you a lot
I remember you saying. He did a fine job. They go beautifully.
@@RingerJake They are nice bells
Gauge belfry too
Pity Whitechapel closed
There is no doubt that Taylor were and are masters of heavy metal but Whitechapel excelled at producing very bright and chirpy light 8s.
What I class as the quintessential wedding bell ring
That tenor, WOW! Fantastic video Jake.
Glorious, I was ringing for service at Bradford Cathedral this morning and absolutely nothing beats a good 12!
Very nice. Bradford are particularly lush. That tenor really roars beautifully.
Great video Jake. These are a fine ring
Thanks, they are lovely. Especially in the belfry! The hum of the back three is fantastic!
Wow what glorious bells!
They're even better in the flesh, trust me. :P
a brilliant 12
This is where the 12 Bell Contest will be.
Providing it's not cancelled like the last two!
@@RingerJake OK.
Inelegant cathedral but nice bells
