- The final tower of the Guildford Guild Open Day.
Guildford Cathedral have a fabulous ring of twelve bells with the tenor weighing 30cwt. The back ten were cast in 1965, 1963 and 1961 along with the two trebles in 1975. They blend well and sound gorgeous as a twelve. The tenor recently had a new wooden shafted clapper fitted in as the old one was too hummy for the rest of the bells.
The bells go well and there is no tower sway whatsoever. The ringing room is huge and you could certainly fit a massive crowd up there. The cathedral is quite modern, but in the belfry, the bells echo like crazy which gives them their character. The bells are also the sister ring to Washington Cathedral in America, but I personally think Guildford have the edge.
I really enjoyed ringing here and the atmosphere and the ringers were really welcoming. I hope to come back for the national 12 bell in June this year.
Here is a touch of Stedman Cinques conducted by Richard Burton. Enjoy!
Wonderfully spacious ringing chamber; and a lovely peal (although not quite as 'sweet' as that of Lincoln).
loved these, our tenor is from this town!!
Did you ring the tenor
No.
There's a lot more in ringing than ringing tenors...
@@francescogreenslade7793 Yes. I didn’t ring the tenor as I wasn’t asked to. Ringing trebles shows more bell control than ringing tenors as you have to hold them up, this is especially good if the trebles are flighty.
@@RingerThomas Treble here isn't too bad but takes some concentration to ring well - the first time I rang it I dropped the first backstroke 😆 but then rang it into Maximus without any trouble. It's as hard work as pulling heavy bells into methods
Did you ring the tenor?
No.
