Ringer Thomas
Добавлен 30 май 2019
Hello and welcome to my channel. My name is Thomas, and as you can see, I am a church bell ringer. I have always been interested in the sound of bells ever since I was very young.
This channel covers my hobby in full detail, and I would like to share my experience with the world on why I enjoy bell ringing and why you yourself could be a ringer too. What you will see on here is various visits I do, whether it is a quarter peal or general ringing. It covers pretty much of what my ringing life is all about. So I would suggest you subscribe so you don't miss out on the experience 😉

Lincolnshire Surprise Major at Bray, Berkshire
An excerpt from a quarter peal of Lincolnshire Surprise Major, rung at St Michael’s Church, Bray, on Sunday, 2nd of February 2024.
St Michael’s boasts a grand peal of eight bells in D Major, known for their booming, growling tone that fills the tower with a powerful sound. Despite being cast by a mix of different founders, they blend remarkably well, with Gillett & Johnston being the most common. The tenor, cast in 1656 by Ellis II & Henry III Knight, produces a Major third sound strikingly similar to those of Gillett & Johnston. With their smooth handling and rich resonance, these bells make for an easy-going and enjoyable eight. The six largest bells were cast between 1612 and 1914, whi...

An excerpt from a quarter peal of St Clement’s College Bob Minor, rung at Rogate, West Sussex, on Sunday, 26th January 2025. The 1904 John Taylor & Co peal of six at Rogate are a truly lush and mellow-sounding set of bells. Despite being slightly oddstruck and a little tricky to handle, their rich, warm tone makes them a pleasure to ring. The sound is full and resonant, fitting beautifully with...

An excerpt from a quarter peal of Cambridge Surprise Minor, rung at Shepperton, Surrey on Sunday, 5th January 2025. St Nicholas Church houses a peal of six bells, originally a ring of five until the addition of a treble in 1980. The back five, cast in 1877 by John Warner & Sons, have the classic Warner sound, and while it would have been interesting to hear them as a five, they work surprisingl...

The church has six bells, with the treble and 4th cast by John Taylor & Co in 1905 and 1907, while the other four were cast by Lester & Pack in 1765. Great audio!
Thank you! The Zoom does a good job!
Thank you…I am going to try and use your technique with the last loop…I set bells still holding the last loop, terrible I know!!
they sound like draytn norfolk church bells
hohoho taylors plus scantus bell 2014 1904 tenor 8-1-21
One of the best sixes in existence.
amen
They are a really great six.
Well done for the exam and the QP!
Thank you! Passing mathematics was never going to be easy!
Old achool bells, but loads of character.
Yes. I quite like their characterful clonk!
@RingerThomas ok I must admit I love modern harmonic tuning but some old school bells do have a bucket load of character, and in many ways the typical English village seems much better with the older bells. Have you ever visited Dedham in Essex, they are total unringable due to the tower, I believe the 8 ropes attach to the clappers so possible to chime out change ringing. I findxit sad, how nice to pull them out and retune and use else where then install a really light 8 or 6. I always feel sad to see bells not rung anymore.
megan and harrys wedding took place here
rudhall bells in 1718
😮😮😮😮😮😊😊
Can't believe how small I was back then 😆
An anklebiter 😂
Hmmm that's strange that i can see 2 comments not 7.
Lovely!
@Ringer Thomas you don’t need to tail end cut in grand shire triples do you, and how do you tail end cut properly without over pulling the bell
That sounds like Big Ben chimes fast vision
What can i say, 21cwt Gillett and Johnston of 1911, absoulute classic gems. This ring is superb, so well struck. I could just lay down, shut my eyes and be in the moment. Thanks Thomas for uploading this. I feel certain that my dad rehung these in 1969.
Haven't rung here. But they sound lovely outside, although quite oddstruck!
gillett and johnson 1911 tenor 21--1-22cwts
You really do have to state the obvious, don't you?
He does, and quite often incorrectly. I wonder if he can actually ring @@RingerThomas Love the major thirds tenor... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
A really nice country ring and nice ringing. Happy birthday too.
Thank you very much!
These are lovely bells and some cracking ringing. I really love the sustain you get on half muffled ringing, especially on a covering tenor.
Thank you very much!
@RingerThomas I do love great ringing even though I'm not great, I also love the sound of good bells especially ones wit1h g1woof harmonic tuning, thdy are pleasing to listen to.
These really sound like pier head in Liverpool.
these bells are really beautiful, the architecture of the tower is excellent
I agree!
would a augmentation to 10 happen in the future or is there no space
Nah, the plan is hopefully to use the current 7th as the new tenor and keep the barlett bells with 5 new recast bells from the tenor.
A really nice bit of ringing. Great bells too
Thank you very much!
@RingerThomas You're welcome 😊 Is this local to where you usually ring?
@@DeanDe-Matteis Yes.
I love these!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL, I actually think these are better than the gorgeous 8 at Jewry. The tenor is an absolute cracker, I actually Ihpught ot was a prewar Taylor bell. The rnging was lovely. Im trying to add 2 and 2 Is Dylan Kiwi bellringer, and also is Luca Franseco bell ringer. Keep posting Thomas, this is a top notch video. I think Jewry, Clerkenwell and these are the best 8s in London
The Whitechapel bells were more mellower than the gillett bells! Dylan is Kiwibellringer. Luca is not Francesco Bellringer. However, he is his brother.
Two different people, Steve.
gillett and johnson and whitechapel tenor 24-0-5cwts
trebles and tenor are mears and stainbank the rest ellis knight old bells
Ah Mr Dove, you have struck again.
Well done! 5 points to you!
@Steven_Rowe They are not a bad eight, in my opinion!
@@RingerThomas I think they sound ok too. When you ring really lovely sounding bells it makesyou really appreciate them even more.. Westbury spring to mind as one of so many top notch 8s
Nice❤
I'm learning the ropes myself, but this looks terrifying.
THIS REMINDS ME OF ST MICHAELS PENKRIDGE
Well done 👍🏻
Nice bells deserve nice ringing and this video epitomises that. Lovely indeed.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello Thomas, first time i have hezrd these bells on RUclips. I used to ring here on Monday ights back in the 1960s You very close to my home tower of St Anns Stamford Hill. My dad rehung the bells in 1957 and added two trebles to make an 8. His name is on the second. ruclips.net/video/Tgoue-Cm3Xo/видео.htmlsi=r2HlASOpUynjSvrv
Sounds a bit like Beverley minster.
Beverley are far better!
Are you joking, these are old style tuning, Beverley use Simpson harmonic tuning .
Definitely old school bells here and anticlockwise too. Thry sound good for old bells. I have never worked out why some peals are anticlockwise when conventionally bells are.clockwise. You Zyklon be interested in this Thomas, on Sunday the staple on the 11th clapper at St Andrews in Sydney broke, the clapper felt out , smashed the slider in two and the shaft of the clapper has a slight bend it. Good it never hit the end of the frame as that could have cracked the bell.
Proper old style noise to these, lovely
Well done Thomas! 👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Mesmerising ringing!
Indeed. Someone asked me if I was ringing in this! I'm not even good enough!
@@RingerThomas The key is not good enough 𝘺𝘦𝘵 - the same can be said for many ringers with the drive and passion to get to that stage (myself included - I am definitely not yet at that level!) but if we keep working hard we'll get there at some point 🙂
Thank you for the history of this wonderful place. The bells are great! Liked and subscribed.
The ringing room could do with some tarting up, very grim. I think a rehang would be good and also some modern tuning.
@@Steven_Rowe I'd leave the rehang and retuning out of the equation. They are full of character! The ringing room has character as it reminds me of a prison.
@@RingerThomas yes they have charactercwithout a doubt. The prison analogy is brilliant Love it. I heard from Billy Clarke, he said he knows you. He likes ringing at asouthwark, he also likes The Gilletts at Clernkenwell, this is a must ring at as I know you like the s9und of good bells and Clerkenwell are so good..
Some very nice well struck ringing. Lovely old school bells too.
Yes they are
Really lovely ringing on some classic Whirchapel bells, I think they would augment to a fine 8.
If you want the eight bell version. Go to St Andrew, Holborn.
@@RingerThomas I think two of my favourite 8s are Jewry and St James Clerkenwell. Clerkenwell are Gilletts & J gems.
@@Steven_Rowe I also saw Billy Clarke on Friday. He said he knows you.
@RingerThomas he certainly does. Billy is a really good heavy bell ringer. I believe he lives in London now. I know he liked Clerkenwell, I don't know if you have rung there but they are beautiful bells.
@Steven_Rowe I haven't rung at Clerkenwell. However, I am ringing at Hampstead, which is a 24cwt eight.
Do you know those back 6 bells are actually the same not to the front 6 of York minster.
These sound nice
@@Coreytheringer2345 Yes. They are not too bad for Warners. I was expecting worse!
@@RingerThomas tenor 15/1/2cwts
Very nice harmony :) Could You record bell in St Matthias church in Richmond (sorry for importunity) and bells in st Augustine church in Broxbourne please? 🙃
Yes I haven't forgotten.
@@RingerThomas Oh, that's great :) I've got a nostalgic memories with this both churches and it would be nice after years to see this bells ringing :) Can't wait :)
These are nice!
Well they're muffled do it has to be a funeral
No it wasnt a funeral, it was to mark 5 years since the fire at Notre dame.
Hello! Could You record (inside of tower) bells in st Matthias church in Richmond (Gr. London), please?
I could try. But I doubt it will happen. They have one bell.
@@RingerThomas Ok, so please try to record that bell inside of tower. I'll be so grateful :)
@@RingerThomas if You could in the video with that bell show the ringing bell and from time to time show photos of church and belfry (I mean bell ropes chamber and some photos of the bell and bell chamber. I can sent You some movie with such footage, if You don't know what I mean) if obviously a montage of this video this way isn't a problem for You. I'll be so greatful for movie with this bell. God bless Yourself! 🔔😀
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Wonderfully spacious ringing chamber; and a lovely peal (although not quite as 'sweet' as that of Lincoln).
