  • An excerpt from a touch of Grandsire Doubles rung half-muffled for Remembrance Sunday at All Hallows Church, Twickenham on (Sunday 10th November 2024)
The tower at All Hallows has a wonderful ring of ten bells, with the tenor weighing in at 18 cwt. Cast by various well-known founders from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry-such as Richard Phelps, Thomas Lester, and Mears and Stainbank. These bells combine to create a splendid sound. The tenor’s deep resonance lends a rich warmth to the ringing.
The history of these bells is intriguing. Originally, they were part of St. Dionis Backchurch, then later moved to All Hallows on Lombard Street. Over time, safety concerns led to another relocation, and the bells now have their home in Twickenham’s rebuilt tower. In 1951, most of the bells were retuned, with a few being recast. Then, in 1988, two new bells were added, while the older ones were moved to St. John the Baptist in Windsor.
Ringing here is always a joy, though the tower’s movement can sometimes surprise you with an unexpected drop. The sound is impressive, especially the tenor, though the smaller bells are quieter, which is a bit of a letdown. Still, ringing at All Hallows is always something to remember.
