This has inspired me never to think about becoming a steeplejack.

You do right. I started in this trade when I first left school in April 1977 and had an epiphany up the top of a 302 foot chimney stack at International Harvester in Doncaster. I was OK going up but once at the top I fruz and it was a while before my legs had the give in them to go back down, and once down, I never went up more'n 15 foot ever again!

I love seeing how things were done years ago, most stuff was was made in either metal, wood or glass back in the 70’s still, back when we had a manufacturing industry and was a nation of grafters (specially shameful recently was when we suddenly needed surgical masks urgently and even something as simple as that was not available because no one in England were making any) especially fascinating watching to watch this, just the same as Fred’s vids, filmed back in gentler times when we never expected as much out of life or were as spoilt, i wonder if anyone knows the whereabouts of this family ? The kids in the other video of the Dawson’s would be about 60 now.

The downdraft from the helicopter main rotor would have been bloody dangerous if you ask me!..In fact I couldn't see the purpose!..As for the replacement stone, I'd have thought a slightly wider gap would have been in order with a wetter mix applied to the stone so it squeezed out when being tapped into place...Great video all the same!!

@Here's Johnny: And why he roughed the backside of the stone surface opening/hole up before he troweled the grab cement mix onto it... To make sure it gripped for 100 years... Clean/rough surface to bond to... Otherwise not doing so means it won't grab and hold for 100 years... [Can kill people not doing it when the stone comes loose and falls...]

The idea of the tight joint is less mortar to fall out but will keep the stone trapped owing to the fit.

@@union310 The man has been a professional steeplejack all his working life, since he was fifteen years old. His father was a steeplejack as was his grandfather and great grandfather. In fact he comes from five generations of very highly regarded steeplejacks. And yet here you are, sitting on RUclips in your underpants telling him he’s doing it wrong. Just fuck off. It’s people like you who make modern life so fucking tedious.

I never climbed up an open ladder more than 150 feet. The part I dislike about it is how long and how much effort it takes to go up and down. I am also an electrician so I have to bring all kinds of tools, light fixtures, screws, tools etc up with me. If I drop a screw It is a like living on the 20th floor and walking down only to discover you forgot your car keys.

It looks like, possibly, the North South East West direction marker, made of steel that sits underneath the gold chicken was lowered from the helicopter.

Gringo Heineken shut up ffs! There is more to these iconic, ancient churches, cathedrals, monasteries that we have dotted around Great Britain/UK than just religion. They’re symbolic of British culture and heritage pal! We can’t just let them go to rack and ruin cos they represent a religion. Religious or not, I for one think they’re awesome things to look at from our rich and long past.
