Yeah Elizabeth is a coward. She won't admit that deep inside she admires Aibileen as a great nanny to her daughter, but she wouldn't want to lose her so-called "friends" like Hilly.
Elizabeth has post-partum depression also doesn't have fully formed critical thinking skills--lack of college education. Still in the 'herd mentality' of high school. Husband has college education but also is afraid of sticking his neck out. Next book might have the two of them friends with the Footes--the other white couple with health issues so they do learn not to be bullied.
I don't think Elizabeth is evil--like Hilly. I think she is abused. If she had help escaping the abuse and her depression she might be a different and better person.
Mae Mobley is going to grow up in a different south.....and different America. By the time she goes to college there will be African Americans on Supreme Court, cabinet and in space. She might not understand why her mom lacked access to appropriate mental care, but things will be different.

Some psychological studies showed that this would result in a white baby being taught to hate black people by their parents. Or they will end up resenting black people because they grow up thinking they were abandoned by the black maids that showed love to them 😞
Theres a part of the movie when someone says they grow up to be just like their parents. But something jus occured to me. Women like Aibileen took care of these kids and their parents seemed to think that helpers were expendable. But when these parents fired these women they forget about the child. The child would either grow to hate their parents and society for blacks being held down or the child could grow to hate blacks not because of society but because of the feeling of abandonment. Imagine this black person loving you and caring for you just leaves you alone so not only do they hate their parents for not taking care of them they hate blacks for the feeling od abandonment. It breeds hatred.
"weak"? she had postpartum depression at the time... and would you love being outcast by your community just because of another person. Im not saying being racist is right.. its never alright, but before anything, shouldn't she take care of her mental health first? Also, its not like she disgrace her or anything... she didn't even say a word to her.
I get what you’re saying as I believe silence is dangerous but remember this: she’s a minor. She’s twisted around by her own mother who is clearly domineering, narcissistic, and controlling. Abusive in many ways. Imagine if she stood up. What would happen to her? To her baby sister? They’re clearly neglected and who knows what else.
@Cat under a Cubs blanket Fear comes into play for Elizabeth and she is following social norms and trying to fit in society. Afraid to speak out is one of the ills but not necessarily violence.
The way Hilly tenses up when Aibileen walks towards her is gold. She's probably had never been face to face with another black person that close up. I think the message Aibileen was giving cut even deeper with her being 12 inches from her face. Aibileen was nervous as well because Hilly could have retaliated if she wanted to, that's why she lets out a sigh of relief at the end.
It hit her so hard cause I know she was tired. She had so much hate in her heart. I don’t think she liked herself very much so imagine someone actually seeing it in you? So broken inside that all you want to do is beat down every one else. Truth hurts is an understanding here. That “you’re a godless woman” drove it home.
Agree! I remember the part where her mom told her, your daddy ruined you!! Her mom wasn’t so mean the way she was. So definetly learned from her father! I loved this part because her crying with those sharp words about being godless and aren’t you tired broke her down from her high horse.. not sure if I am right but wonder if her tears were shame and since never been talked like that to before made her finally powerless?
Like the current President, Hilly is a Malignant Narcissist, this is because she had a huge hole in her psych that needs to be filled with contempt and hate, the real hatred (buried deep down in Hilly's soul) Is the hatred and knowledge that she is lacking in compassion or any other true emotion and therefore is despicable.
I think the almost compassionate why she told her that broke her. She could've said something nasty to her but she just told her the truth and asked her a simple question.
I don't think its a cold sore (unless Minnie had herpes). It's probably some nasty reaction to her consuming shit. Maybe E. Coli related. Or maybe her nasty ass husband had it.
When me and my family first watched this scene in the theaters, we were the first ones to clap when Aibileen stood up for herself against Hilly. We have the dvd now and we still clap for Aibileen and we still cry at the end.
What you want a fucking award or what. God damn you all must want attention. Clapping in a theatre and then coming to RUclips to announce it. Virtue signal much? Cringe.
What we have here is history repeating itself: Charlotte Phelan couldn't stand up to Mrs. Higginbotham and sent Constantine and her daughter away. Fast forward and Elizabeth couldn't fully stand up to Hilly and sends Aibileen away. Mae Mobley will be her generation's Skeeter Phelan.
@@db200508 In the book Aibileen says that kids Mae Mobley's age do remember things. Even if she didn't remember it, she would hear about it years later and question everything.

I’m pretty sure a black person had never been so close to Hilly like that, looked at her in the eyes like that. That was so powerful!!! Hilly realized how low the story of her eating Minnie’s shits made her to become.

It was to show that EVERYTHING was stratified. Even among the White Women there still a dictatorial "leader". Male/female, Black/White, Rich/Poor, Farmer/ White Collar, pretty/funny-looking. Even the kids have a pecking order with their mom. Its much more explicit in the book.
wouldn't you dislike somebody coming into your house and making demands/giving orders ignoring you?? I wish Elizabeth had thrown Hilly out. But she had depression and was barely functioning.
it still happens. my friend is white and worked as a nanny. she loved the children but the mom was difficult. my friend stayed in the job because she loved the children and she knew if she left, ti would hurt the children. one day with no warning, the mom fired her. she was more upset about how it would affect the children than about the fact that she had lost her job.
Up to this date, I really can't believe how in the hell Meryl's poor attempt to imitate Thatcher won over this masterpiece of an acting by Viola David.
I was a CNA and I’ve met a lot of Hilly’s. She was sooooo evil. Her husband threw her in the nursing home and she’d lie. Use her body weight to weigh me down. Fall on the floor report.
Charlotte Haruyuki *x files theme music plays* me:Oh shit
Yeah, I am no psychologist but sounds like something negative they could subconsciously associate other black people with.
Hmmm there's a thought.
Of course why do you think a lot of white people help end segregation, slavery etc.
that is NOT why they hate black people!! they hate black people cause they think they're superior.
Hilly: "Elizabeth can take care of her own children."
Elizabeth: "I can?"
The nerve of that woman, she enters someone elses home and fires her employee. And that milksop just lets her.
Elizabeth is the reason why there's so many racists in the world. The silent ones are the worst for me, because they're weak
"weak"? she had postpartum depression at the time... and would you love being outcast by your community just because of another person.
Exactly
Weak?
Its blk mans responsibility to protect his race of women and children.Thats not wht women responsibility.
Bullies hate themselves deep down
They take out their own feelings of inadequacy on others
I think the almost compassionate why she told her that broke her. She could've said something nasty to her but she just told her the truth and asked her a simple question.
Anyone else notice that cold sore on Hilly's lip?
Jaleesa Greene she got it from the shit she ate I guess lol
I don't think its a cold sore (unless Minnie had herpes). It's probably some nasty reaction to her consuming shit. Maybe E. Coli related. Or maybe her nasty ass husband had it.
@@lekhayes13 It's probably from he husband lord knows he probably doesn't want to sleep with her cold fish ass.
@@jaleesagreene6800 I wouldn't blame him at all. I wouldn't sleep with cold hearted witch either.
Must be from the pie
"Elizabeth can take care of her own children" like gurl
Look at her
She can't even stand there
"She can't even stand there". I literally can't even. OUTSTANDING observation. And funny as hell 2 boot😅🎇
god I hated hilly but it just proves that Dallas Howard played her so amazingly!
Bryce Dallas Howard played that role!!! Damn I hated her!!!
She played it so well that sometimes i forgot she played an insecure woman in one of Black Mirror episode xD
Ebony R. Yet she plays Lacie so iconic in black mirror you just gotta love u some award winning acting
The tear that roles down her cheek, she is amazing
I know that girl is a brilliant actress. She's beautiful too. I still watch her father on The Andy Griffith show. 😃
@@Embrinna omg yesss nosedive😍
That “Ain’t you tired, Miss Hilly? Ain’t you tired?” pierced through my soul. Wow.
Amazing acting 😱
Don’t Try It it was sensational ❤️
Bryce Dallas Howard was so good in her role as Hilly! Everyone that watches the movie hates the charachter.
She did not have a single word of retaliation because Abilene summed up her entire existence in just a couple of sentences!
Cringe.
Why did she have the fever blister?
This only makes me cry tears of joy because these maid women employees finally became free from their wicked miserable misguided godless employers.
The honesty in “ain’t you tired?” Breaks my heart every time.
"I know something about you, don't you forget that!" ... I used that on my criminal ex a long time ago in an argument... Worked like a charm!
Bloombaby99 Mae won’t remember her because she’s too young. Skeeter was practically an adult when she moved away to college.
@@db200508 In the book Aibileen says that kids Mae Mobley's age do remember things. Even if she didn't remember it, she would hear about it years later and question everything.
She will not forget those words “you is kind, you is smart, you is important”
by the time Mae Mobley would be an adult it would be the 1980s and jim crow laws would have been long gone
@@JamesSmith-sc9bu that is true but also racism is still to this day alive and well. we see it more because social media and electronic devices has made it easier to showcase the racists. but imagine back then without the huge media platforms and racism still being an issue. you may not experience it but it dont mean people of color dont either
You is kind, you is smart, you is important.
The scene that came after this just broke my heart. I hated hearing that poor little girl cry and yell for her🥺🥺😭😭💔💔
Me too.
A woman who always said the things to the children the mother SHOULD have said.
I’m pretty sure a black person had never been so close to Hilly like that, looked at her in the eyes like that. That was so powerful!!! Hilly realized how low the story of her eating Minnie’s shits made her to become.
It takes a real special type of person to really deserve Ms. Minny's special chocolate pie. Hilly was the OG Karen.
The acting in this scene is superb and memorable. Kudos to both Viola and Bryce.
I’d like to rewatch this film but Viola Davis’s performance as Abilene tears my heart up.I’m not much of a cryer ( or is it crier?)anymore but her heartfelt performance makes me cry.The pain Abilene went through by being used by the women she worked for and by losing her son can be seen and felt so much in her face.
“You’re a godless woman”.. I love that line.
Ain't you tired , That line gets me everytime. Especially since it reminds me of a person in my life who is just like her so evil and yet still thinks they do nothing wrong....
She played the shit out of this part. BOTH of them did. Good shit.
"Aint you tired miss hilly".................I really did feel this line. I mean it just must be exhausting to be that hateful, and conniving. She must be tired.
"Ain't you tired, Miss Hilly? Ain't you tired?"
Powerful words. True, how can someone so hateful find the energy to be so?
i felt this deep...because the kindest being only to be discriminated for looking different gets you killed or beat to submission.... how honorable this film was. i loved the tired part... i wish my narcisist was tired for once...to just stop hurting others....
My grandmother did this for a corporate owner I went with her several times but never truly understood. My grandmother raised them as if they were her own children she cooked she cleaned she basically did everything. This scene breaks my heart she truly truly truly loved those girls with all her heart.
I’ve met soooooo many woman like Hilly in my life. Just vil spirited and rotten with racism for no good reason. Doctors, nurses, HR, police officers, my teachers/professors, mechanic. The list goes on! Serious question “are some of you not tired?” . Damn lol
Fair question, why are some woman like that from a females perspective?
@@masonorosco1090 My mood behind my comment is about racist women.. you'll have to ask them.
@@DrinkWhiskeyRaiseHell Sometimes people's hatred and contempt just radiates from them like a terrible case of Body Odour. 😞
1:41 That's acting at it's most PROFESSIONNAL.... lips shaking..tears.. anger... WOW Nice acting
“Already sold a lot of books!!!”
Soul crushing one liner haha I’d hire this legend in a heartbeat!
I haven’t seen this movie, but it’s definitely on my shortlist now.
both beautiful and incredibly talented actresses. 😍😍😍😍😍
Aibleen claimed Hilly’s already condemned soul with that “Godless woman” jibe.
"Elizabeth can take care of her own children."
No! She can't! That's her whole plot!
Her eyes got big cuz someone finally stood up to her
The first time a watched this scene, I was speechless. Such a beautiful movie. Oscar worthy.
1:17 the look on hillys face says everything she's scared of aibileen and her perfect twisted world vison is starting to unravel
I remember this in real life 47 years ago. Jackson Mississippi 1976 ish
I LOVE this scene. The biggest slap of truth Hilly ever needed. =)
this makes me weeeeep every time such amazing acting
I absolutely love this movie and this scene. Abilene says something so perfect: ain’t you tired? It’s a perfect statement to a person like miss evil hilly.
How do you let somebody else fire your help when you know you need her
It was to show that EVERYTHING was stratified.
Even among the White Women there still a dictatorial "leader". Male/female, Black/White, Rich/Poor, Farmer/ White Collar, pretty/funny-looking. Even the kids have a pecking order with their mom.
Its much more explicit in the book.
There always has to be an “Alpha” when you play the game.
When you worry more about your reputation than your children
What a magnificent performance from both actress, I felt it...
Hilly was so nasty and evil, even her friends were scared of her.great movie
Hell yeah..they’re all scared of Hilly Holbrook
Hilly doesn't have friends. The people she associates with fear upsetting her. Not the same as a friend.
Hilly got scared lmfao!!! Abileen ran up on her and she wasn’t ready for the smoke she could’ve gotten.
This is the absolute BEST scene of the movie, THE HELP
When she says, “ do you get tired, ms.hilly, do you get tired” it sends a message to me every time
You can see Elizabeth really starting to dislike Hilly in this scene
wouldn't you dislike somebody coming into your house and making demands/giving orders ignoring you?? I wish Elizabeth had thrown Hilly out. But she had depression and was barely functioning.
Hilly got a herpe sore on her lip, and she focused on this. I'd be in the house hiding my present from Minnie's 💩 pie. 😂😂😂
This breaks my heart on so many different levels.. .
It makes me so soul crushingly sad that things like this actually used to happen. It’s absolutely disgusting.
it still happens. my friend is white and worked as a nanny. she loved the children but the mom was difficult. my friend stayed in the job because she loved the children and she knew if she left, ti would hurt the children. one day with no warning, the mom fired her. she was more upset about how it would affect the children than about the fact that she had lost her job.
Hilly cried because Abilene sees it and no one else does.
Why she left like he looked like her mother told her go to her room 😂😆🤣😆
It’s very telling that Mae went to Abileen rather than her own mother.
Up to this date, I really can't believe how in the hell Meryl's poor attempt to imitate Thatcher won over this masterpiece of an acting by Viola David.
Hilly is the type of monster who gets sent to a home when they're old and then gets to go to hell when they die.
Peaches or they go to a nursing home where they are taken care of by the same people they hate... diapers, feeding and cleaning! Just like 👶🏼
I was a CNA and I’ve met a lot of Hilly’s. She was sooooo evil. Her husband threw her in the nursing home and she’d lie. Use her body weight to weigh me down. Fall on the floor report. Scratch, throw poo. She was super evil. I don’t know if she is still alive but it was crazy. But it’s amazing how life works. It comes around full circle
@@amadeon827 I used to take of this elderly lady in a nursing home over 10 years ago.
The amount of times I got verbally abused by this woman was enough for me to walk out the room and take a deep breathe.
No matter how nice I was to her, she would still call me the N-word with such venom.
I know alot of them have dementia but I imagine that this particular patient was a "Hilly" back in her youth.
The only secure source of love and kindness was the maid. So relatable. Brings nature vs nurture into perspective.
Haha, rendered speechless. Aibilene really struck a nerve.
How very beautiful actresses are put together to create memorable scenes.
this is one of the most saddest scenes i've ever watched. it left me BAWLING my eyes out.
Viola Davis should have won an Oscar for this performance. May Mobely crying for her Abey breaks my heart. Poor Elizabeth cant take care of herself or her housework thats why she has Abeline❤
I love this part.., but I especially love the part when the momma says , Get your raggedy ass of my porch! This acting is superb.. I can see it selling a lot books.
Glad someone had the guts to stand up to Hilly because Elizabeth wasn't going to.
I feel so sorry for that women’s little girl poor love 😭
When Mae Mobey grows up, she’ll be really upset with her mum Elizabeth Leefoot and running after both Skeeter and Celia
I don't blame Hilly for being shook one bit. "You a godless woman" ugh... to receive that insult is to be paralyzed. Em...smh. She earned it though.
I’ve always wondered…
For a cruel woman like Hilly who had started this scene by being so proud, looking so triumphant to end up in tears with a look of fear and defeat…
What string did Aibileen touch there when speaking to her ? What did she wake in Hilly that succeeded in crushing her so strong pretense ?
Truth- that's what crushed Hilly.
African Americans have been sent through alot!! How sad. I can't resist tears when watching this movie.
She hurt tht lady feelings 😂
Elizabeth was such a pushover
People like hilly don’t get “TIRED” they get “EVEN”.
“Elizabeth can take care of her own children.”
It’s very clear that Elizabeth has post partum depression and at least didn’t seem to be ready to be a mother.
"Elizabeth can take care of her own children"
No she can't, she's a decent person (racist like almost everyone else) but a terrible, clueless mother. Seeing Hilly's face at 1:42 knowing that Aibileen has only spoken truth and she can't even deny it is so satisfying even if it did get her fired. Just have to feel bad for Elizabeth's kids knowing Elizabeth is practically useless as a parent.
It's not really mentioned in the film, but in the book it's clear that Elizabeth suffered from post partum depression. That's why she's so aloof with her children. A product of the times when such a thing wasn't really talked about and she had nowhere to turn to. So she clings to the only people in her life that may be able to understand.
"You a godless woman" shook me to my coar
"Elizabeth can take care of her own children!" Clearly she can't...
I cry with the “ain’t you tired” part every time
The actress that played Hilly needs a damn award cause she did a fantastic job
The saddest part was cut out was the little girl banging on the window calling for her "aabie aabie!!"
Cruel. 😢😢
Rude.😢😢😢
Malsain.😢😢😢😢
Elizabeth is hateable.😢😢😢
She is mean.😢😢😢
Hilly dosen’t give any of the maids a chance, just accuse of them doing a crime and then send them to jail. In reality, Hilly should be the one in jail
Right
Yes exactly!!! Both Hilly and Elizabeth needed to go to jail for insulting Aibileen and the other black maids for some reason
hilary things shes unstoppable, but like every other villian, once her sidekick no longer supports her, she's powerless
