The look of hope @ 1:28. She actually thought Hilly was going to give her the money only to be sadly disappointed. What an amazing and sad convey of emotion from the actress.
Actually this is the only thing this snake of Hilly was right on. If you make 1 dollars a day working 10 hours and your employer doesn't need you to work more than 10 hours, how can you repay the loan ? To pay back a loan you need to be able to work more than you do, so this maid would have to work a second job elsewhere after her job to pay back the loan, which is basically impossible, so she would have been in debt endlessly. The only establishment you can get a loan from is the bank or if you have good ones, friends. The bank will demand that you pay back more than you borrow so you are more likely to end up more and more in debt as years go buy until you lose everything you own to pay the bank back (that's how banks function) , but you can't ask your employer a loan, just a raise or an advance on the next wage . So as much as it kills me to admit it, Hilly or in her case Helly , was sadly right. And the worst thing to do was to steal the ring , this was a HUGE mistake. Stealing is already bad in itself but stealing from your employer is the most stupid thing to do, because you lose your job, you lose your freedom and nobody goes to college , and the sons' career is over before it even started. So hilly was disgustingly cruel, but the Maid (i am sorry i do not remember her name) shouldn't have stolen the ring and just sent the brightest of the two sons to college. Even today many families can't send all of their kids to college and sacrifices are made, so people should not live above their means and be realistic. Personally i believe that parents who can not provide the best for their kids and who aren't fully sure that money will not be an issue should refrain from having kids or stop to the number of kids they can afford. I think this is very selfish to have kids when you do not have enough money to provide them with everything they need (not want, need, like a proper education).Of course this doesn't apply to this maid because back in those days maid or not, women didn't have the possibility to choose and the only birth control was either abstinence or abortion (and i mean , knitting needles and hooks and vinegar water.

@@morganolfursson2560 If she was loaned 75 dollars and was paid a dollar a day by Hilly, then working 75 days without getting paid would pay off the debt. @@khadijahmuhammad4771 But maids in those days already worked seven days a week 365 days a year so they couldn't get any extra work day to pay off the loan . If they worked 365 days a year for a dollar a day then all they could make was 365 dollars a year, no a penny more , so if Hilly had given an extra 75 dollars to the maid then the maid could have never paid the loan back even if she had worked another 60 years for Hilly. That's simple math. If i employ you 7 days a week and pay you 7 dollar a week, and you ask me to give you and extra 5 dollars, how are you ever going to pay me back that extra 5 dollars you owe me. By working more ? But when , tyou want to put 8 days in a week for 5 weeks ? That's impossible, you want to work nights too, but i don't need you at night so why would i make you work, do you want to bring your brother or sister to work for me for that extra 5 dollar, but i only need you, not extra staff . So , exactly how do you plan on paying me these 5 dollars back ?

And, you could tell by her crushed expression that Yule May picked that time to ask because he was at home, too. She knew she probably stood a better chance of him convincing Hilly to do so. The actress does a really good job of portraying the hopefulness and then feeling dejected after Hilly's speech.
The problem wasn’t that she didn’t give her money, it’s her money, and she can do whatever she wants with it The problem was her speech like she was superior for having money and knowing the maid doesn’t
clock o THIS. If you aren’t comfortable giving away money to friends and family, then don’t. Completely understandable. But to say it’s for her own good?! NO. Have your employee do extra work. Have the boys work during the summer for their tuition. Find a way to help her make the money. It’s the spirit of WHY she didn’t give the money that’s the problem.

I bet Celia and Johnny provided enough money for Minnie so Sugar...etc did not need to work and could go to school. Also could go onto college and get better jobs later on
Oooh19 why do you love that scene ? You are probably correct about Minnie's mother giving her the same spill on how to behave around white people. Going full circle the future of her children into a life of oppression, suppression, depression never to have the opportunity to succeed at life. The life of future generations being recycled, what's to love about that ? Unless ur telling me that's exactly what you love .
I feel the same way for Bryce Dallas Howard as I did for Sarah Paulson in 12 Years a Slave. The truly great actresses know how to make you HATE their character when it is needed, which means they have done their job right.
The look of sheer defeat and disappointment on that poor womans face after she was refused the loan shatters my heart every time.....😭 I would have given her the money and not want it back.
Yule May's story is really upsetting in the book. She's asks Hilly for a loan to cover the last of what they need to get both boys to college and when she doesn't get it she steals the ring and it was worthless. Hilly had it valued and it was worth nothing so she never wore it again. In the book Yule May is the first maid to agree to be interviewed by Skeeter but she's arrested, charged and tried before she can do it. She writes Skeeter a letter explaining what she did she and why, she said she felt she was owed it after how badly Hilly treated her and she was too scared to look for another job in case Hilly refused a reference. Hilly uses her influence with Yule May's trial judge (Hilly is friends with his wife) to get Yule May a massive fine that her and her husband have to used their boys college tuition to pay it and the judge gives her the maximum prison sentence which is four years. Pascagoula takes the letter to Skeeter as they're cousins. Thats why all the maids changed their minds about letting Skeeter interview them because Yule May is well liked, she's also very well educated much more so than Hilly she only had a little bit left of college to complete but she dropped out to get married. Skeeter pays the maids for their time during the interviews and most ask for the money to go towards the college fund for Yule May's boys the church start a collection for them after Yule May goes to jail
It's sad what she said about having to throw the whole pot of food out. Dorothy Dandridge stuck her toe in a pool, and they drained the whole thing. They treated us like we were dirty and disgusting. But they were the disgusting ones. Who lets a dog lick them in the mouth?
Just so you know that story isn't true. It is an Urban legend. And you are doing the same thing. For some reason people like you seem to forget that there were a whole lot of white people who fought for, and even died for, the rights of people of African decent.

This movie is a good teaching lesson to be the good that we want to see in the world. I have a son about to graduate and another right behind him. This scene really hit home with me.
That’s so sad, because you can see how happy & proud she is of her boys being on the honor roll & getting to go to college & the Witch just Ruins her moment!.. but of course Hilly could care less bout her boys 😞
If I was born in that time - I swear on my life I would have been friends and treated everyone "working for me" with the dignity they so much deserved.
How horrible can she be ? You're well off if not rich but refuse to give 75$ (around 200$/1 week work) to the person cleaning your house, raising your kids, cooking your food and even doing some yard work. She'd even allow you to take it from her next paycheck. It breaks my heart...anyone else is throwing money at the screen ?

This scene has always made me scratch my head, because my grandmother grew up in the South in a wealthy white family in the 50s and 60s, and they had a black maid. They, for what I understand were very kind and understanding to her and actually gave her money as a gift when her husband got hurt working at the dock yards in Mobile, Alabama. They also invited the maid and her husband for Christmas every year, even though they always declined, however the maid and her family would come to New Year's Eve parties as guest. My grandmother said her parents lost friends for doing that. I've often wondered if my family's story is different because my great grandfather was from the North and moved south for a management position and his wife's family. My great grandmother was born and raised very poor in the south so I guess she sympathized more with the Blacks than other whites. My great grandfather being a Northern and Lutheran probably shaped his opinions on race positively as well. I'm not trying to justify that era or try to down play the bad things Black folks had to deal with. But it just seems weird hearing the stories of my grandmother's youth and then watching movies and reading stories like this. A little difference goes a long way I suppose.
As a Christian who is presumably familiar with Luke 6 you should be GIVING HER the money without expecting to be paid back, especially as she's your sister in Christ.
The power struggle has been a reality of employment for a very long time. Instead of treating others respectfully some feel it necessary to tear others down in an attempt to build themselves up. I look forward to a day that we are just people and an individual's skin colour is NEVER a consideration for any reason.

The real reason Hilly didn't give or loan her black maid that $75.00 is obvious. Hilly didn't have God in her life. How can she love others (as God commands Christians to do) & love God first when she's clearly empty inside of her own self. Hilly was dead inside. No life of Jesus Christ in her life at all. You can't give something you don't have.
I'm glad she didn't lend her that money. You owe someone money and it's like they own you. That woman could have made her work forever without ever paying her all the time lording the fact that she owes her money or that she did her the favor of lending her money. Honestly borrowing money from anybody is a recipe for disaster. It's the best way to end friendships and begin long family disputes.
Women were thinner, on average, in the 1950s. This applied to black women as well... some of which were underfed due to unlivable wages. One of the reasons why I flat out refused to watch this movie is bc they made it a point to make sure that all of the maids looked like "Mammy". Meanwhile, "Mammy" was only depicted as a fat old and unattractive woman via propaganda, to erase and denote the sexual exploitation/ unwanted advances that black women endured in the slave-era ("Mammy" first appeared in the 1700s). They were so dedicated the preserving this myth that they made Viola wear a fat suit smh.

@@morganolfursson2560 If she was loaned 75 dollars and was paid a dollar a day by Hilly, then working 75 days without getting paid would pay off the debt. Hilly might not get $75 back in cash, but she would get it back in labor that she otherwise would have had to pay for. Hilly was just being selfish and cruel.
My heart broke for Minnie’s daughter.. how old was she? Like 14?
yes exactly 14. Horrible.
Yep, another generation. That's the "place" some white folk thought was good enough for "colored" folk - and all we were ever to aspire to. To want more was being "uppity" and "not knowing our place."
I thought she was 16. They also say she couldn't read. Even if you're the worst student you should still be able to read before then.
@@oooh19 Was she 16? I thought she was 14. I could be wrong. But yeah I thought I heard Minny say later on that Sugar couldn't read too. Dang... Poor girl😔 My grandpa grew up illiterate too, quiting 3rd grade to help his family who were migrant workers.
@@LilyZerep She was 14 in the book. And yes my Papa had to quit school in the 6th grade to help out his folks too. Very common place back in those days for our folks. Never had an education but worked about a dozen odd jobs to take care of his family until he died. God rest his soul.
My heart breaks for Minnie daughter! Has to give up her freedom to be a kid and go to school, just to be someone maid.

And, you could tell by her crushed expression that Yule May picked that time to ask because he was at home, too. She knew she probably stood a better chance of him convincing Hilly to do so. The actress does a really good job of portraying the hopefulness and then feeling dejected after Hilly's speech.
I know What a coward. Ugh.
The problem wasn’t that she didn’t give her money, it’s her money, and she can do whatever she wants with it
The problem was her speech like she was superior for having money and knowing the maid doesn’t
clock o THIS.

I love the scene where Minnie is giving her daughter tips on being a maid; she was probably very young and her mom gave her advice. It's going full circle.
I don't.Sugar had to quit school because the family needed the money. She wasn't being a maid to earn spending money. Different than when my brother and I were teenagers.
How far can Sugar get without having completed a high school degree? Dad made her quit school--mom likely did not want her to quit.
I love that she was caring enough to give her a heads up on certain norms and expectations. Many adults aren't helpful to younger people.
I feel the same way for Bryce Dallas Howard as I did for Sarah Paulson in 12 Years a Slave. The truly great actresses know how to make you HATE their character when it is needed, which means they have done their job right.
You know the acting is good when the actor can convince you to hate them.
The Actress who plays Hillie is good at her job cause this scene always got me mad
All of her scenes get me mad.
Bryce Dallas Howard is so good
The look of sheer defeat and disappointment on that poor womans face after she was refused the loan shatters my heart every time.....😭 I would have given her the money and not want it back.

Bryce Dallas Howard is an incredible actress holy
I think it’s truly incredible how great an actress Bryce Dallas Howard is. You go from despising her character in this to sympathizing with her character in that Black Mirror episode (Nosedive if you haven’t seen it she’s great in it) really do love her as an actress💗
This movie is a good teaching lesson to be the good that we want to see in the world.
I have a son about to graduate and another right behind him. This scene really hit home with me.
The way the husband slinked out of that conversation...that isn't a man.
Watching Minnie’s daughter going through same cycle breaks my heart.
Sugar's story isn't included in the book. She apparently gets to break the cycle and go to school, have a different life.

I know what's going on in the world today be specifically in a time like these I can only hope to have the courage black families had to carry. They had no choice.
I’m done IF YOU USE THE PHRASE “as a Christian” YOU BETTER GIVE MORE THAN THEY ASK FOR!!!!!!
So a Christian HAS to give more money by virtue of being Christian? What a joke....
God helps those who helps themselves and that maid is helping herself. So of course he would help her....people....

She didn't care about the money. She just didn't want those black boys to go to college and have access to education.

I remember hearing the story from my great grandmother and how they were treated.
Bryce Dallas Howard's performance in this film is outstanding
Is everyone going to ignore the fact that the husband TOTALLY bailed before she even finished her question? What a beta-male.
It truly is sad and gut wrenching. So many afro-americans in the past missed out on so much in life, so so much just to be servants/maids etc.

Technically though she was right, that wouldnt be working for free, that would be paying the debt. Still, so cold.
She’s still working for free bc she’s not getting paid bc she’s paying off the debt so both is right.
As an Asian, there's nothing more important than Kids education! If you are smart Christian, you will give her $80 and treat it as an investment!
Yo that man said well look at the time 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The power struggle has been a reality of employment for a very long time. Instead of treating others respectfully some feel it necessary to tear others down in an attempt to build themselves up. The way the maid loses all her hope when the husband leaves it’s as if she knows she’s being left with the meaner person who is guaranteed to say no and that she would have more of a chance if he’d stuck around, but the husband was too cowardly to have that conversation so he just left. It must be so hard for talented actresses and actors like her, to play such evil characters and having to look at yourself in the mirror after that but at the same time you wanna act like a true professional and impersonate your character the best way you can, it must be very disturbing. Like I'm thinking about the guy who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones who was so good at impersonating an evil little piece of shit that he received death threats and messages from people saying they respect him as an actor but despise his character so much they'd still want to slap him if they met him in real life. To the point i think he quit being an actor or something..

Working for free to pay off a loan is the SAME as paying off a debt.
