  • The Help is a 2011 film adaption of Kathryn Stockett's novel of the same name. The film features an ensemble cast about a young white woman Eugenia 'Skeeter' Phelan and her relationship with two black maids during the Civil Rights era (early 1960s) in America. Skeeter is a journalist who writes a controversial book (called 'The Help) from the point of view of the maids, exposing the racism they face from working for white families.

@J. C. See, I don't understand this conversation. I worked from the time my son was 4 weeks old. A babysitter "raised" my infant son. That is the reality of being a working mother. So what am I missing here? Whether she worked in a factory, or as a CEO, or as a nanny- someone else would be raising her child.

@J. C. hmm ok well until we are in the position of having to choose whether to leave our children to help them or stay and starve together US Americans need not to say what should be done. Just like non people of color telling people of color how to feel about something that doesn't even affect them!!!!! No one can speak on anything until you are forced to be in that position yourself. 💯💯

Being an immigrant mother is no comparison to being a slave. African Americans were brought to this country against there will. No comparison to immigrants from Latin America who come with there own free will. African Americans built this country not Latin Americans. Fix your own government . Stop the crying about your country when you do nothing to change it but run away.

How Viola Davis didn't win the Best Actress Oscar in 2011 is a mystery to me. She leads this film strong, and gives a real voice to those who were voiceless in that time. I think people misconstrue this film so much because they only see the role, they don't see the context of the role that makes it challenging. Viola Davis' character and Octavia Spencer's character are able to say what no actresses of color playing maids in films could say of the society they were in, and told the story honestly where the romance was stripped away for hard truth. This was the best performance by a lead actress in 2011, not that cheap SNL impersonation of Margaret Thatcher Meryl Streep did in Iron Lady.

@@kazior6521 It is distrubing indeed since black and brown actresses have delivered golden performances throughout film amid all industry restrictions and constraints. It's been five years, and looking back on my comment, it still rings true, except that Emma Stone was given the more dimensional story line and while Aibileen does lead, the focus should have been more on her and Minny, not Stone's Skeeter getting semi-white savior up in there, even though Skeeter is doing this from a genuine place. It's the way the film is framed when the story defies that framing.

I for one really enjoyed this movie, i actually felt nothing but guilt for people in those days that were black, and being made to work,.
Even the scene when Aibileen was asked if she dreams of being something else, just the thought of no black person having a choice of what they want to do and unfortunately we still live in a society where people from different races don't feel valued, like there lifes dont matter by the way they get treated is disgraceful.
People need to be more accepting and open minded of others especially with what is going on in America we are all the same to Quote Annalise Keating from(HTGAWM) 'rascim is built into the DNA of America'

During this era, there were actual laws established to segregate black and white people. White people didn't want close interaction and association with black people because they felt themselves to be better than them.

Im Native American, and i always tear up watching this movie. I can feel the pain, the pain of not having white skin. The way they stare, the way they judge. The way they think of us. I never did no wrong before in my life. Yet im still a disgusting dirty native to some :( this movie hits hard when you can relate.

It doesn't matter what you do. People of color will always be disgusting and dirty to people who believe they are better than you and want to keep you down. Its a psychological trick that they've been doing for centuries. That doesn't make it true though. Hold your head up. Native Americans honored the land, animals and their families. This country would be in a better place if they embraced the Natives and their ways instead of killing them and then corraling them into reservations. Hold to your traditions and ancestors. There is nothing dirty or disgusting about you.

It’s hard for anyone who grows up with racist bigoted parents because the expectation is to be just like them. Defying a racist parent is just as bad today believe me. Racism is taught. No one is born with it. I love this movie because it show cases the truth that African Americans and people of color have gone through and continue to go through. It’s sad but true. Unfortunately.

This doesn't only happen to African housekeepers. Even elite working mothers are sailing in the same boat as the African housekeepers shown in this movie regardless of their race especially teachers, doctors and nurses. Most of the time their kids are in day care centre but at workplace, they take care of other people's kids. So, there is nothing to feel bad about it.

Really? Worrying about who was going to watch their children was only one of their problems? Have you watched the whole movie? A life for an African American woman/house keeper especially in a town like Jackson in the 60s was no treat. Do yourself a favor watch the movie, read the book even and then tell me elite working mothers have it as hard as a African woman in the 60s living in the south of America
