I'm not taking away from Davis at all for her performance in this film because she was phenomenal. However, there is something to be said about an actress that can make you seethe with absolute disgusted hate that Hilly provides. BDH was also excellent and talented to say the least.
You're so right, piphiemily. The problem with hated characters is that people hate them so much they forget that it takes a certain amount of skill to portray. We tend to see great actresses in those who don't make us want to bitchslap them. We see greatness in the actresses who make us laugh and cry and fully ignore the talent it takes for us to hate. I still think the acting nod goes towards those whom we hate but still feel for. Think Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada or Ben Kingsley in House of Sand and Fog. I said, only Sir Ben could get an audience to feel compassion for a wife beater. Miss Hilly wasn't supposed to be likable, and she definitely wasn't. The mannerisms and facial expressions she put out there were perfection.
Yes. It happens a lot on Soaps. There was an Actor named Mark Eden who played this evil SOB on The UK Soap Opera Coronation St. He beat up his Wife Rita and was so horrible to her it was very hard for him to get acting jobs after he left to show. People thought he was bad like that in real life.
I disagree. I think BDH played her character straight of the page. I am not familiar with her work so I cannot say that this is her limit. But she came across very flat. One dimensional. Maybe that was the directors intention. A tactical withdrawal of character development with one character to enhance the advance of the other. The vulgar caricature of Hilly, particularly her race hatred makes Davies character and words much stronger. It is in fact a cheap Hollywood audience pleaser of a character sacrifice into caricature to speed the plot to conclusions for dramatic effect. At times I found it hard to distinguish between Hilly and the evil Witch from the Wizard of Oz! Unfortunately, this type of caricature does not help the socially aware from truly understanding the motivation of Hillys intense race hatred ...which I think could have been explained, with development, to come from a variety of sources; inadequacy and helplessness being just two. But the film is NOT about Hilly.
It didn't go into it in the movie, but by the end of the book, Hilly's reign as Queen Bee was coming to an end. Everyone knew she was the one who ate Minny's pie, and no one was awed by or afraid of her anymore, and the ladies in the Junior League were planning to vote Hilly out as President.
Weren't they gonna replace her with that one women? Oh gosh, I wish I could remember her name. I think it began with an L. She was the first one to come to Skeeter and say that she appreciated what she did to Hilly and the book and everything. And her son died, I think. And she talked about how when he died, black folks were trying to help her and her son, and it was really sweet.
Yeah that was one of many things that wasn't included in the film that I wish was. Another one was how Aibleen got the job of writing the column in the newspaper that she was helping Skeeter with
+Daniel Selk What do you think she meant when she asked her "Ain't you tired?" And why do you think Hilly is crying at the end.. is it because she knows she's guilty?
How Viola Davis did not win the best actress oscar is beyond me.... Her performance in this movie was so real.... This scene is a the epitome of an amazing acting performance....
Two actresses at the top of their game- Viola Davis delivers such a range of emotions in this scene- defensiveness, anger, determination- she gives a powerful performance. Standing up to any bully is hard, especially when they’re threatening your safety. And that moment where Aibileen pulls her trump card is just brilliantly done. And Bryce Dallas Howard (Hilly) is equally skilled- throughout the whole film she does a wonderful job with her portrayal of Hilly. In the last few moments of the film, it feels (to me) like all the walls Hilly’s put up around herself (perfect mom, perfect wife, queen of the neighborhood, etc.) have been torn down. In this scene, I always feel like I’m seeing a new layer of Hilly- she’s still racist and trying to control everyone, but there’s something different about her-what Aibileen says really gets to her, hurts her deeply, and Clark did an amazing job in portraying that moment. It doesn’t make me feel sorry for Hilly, or like her, but it makes me wonder what she’s thinking, if what Aibileen said will have a longer affect on her, and that’s not easy to do-for any actor.
After this Hilly's going to go to her grave with two burdens: Convincing the women of Jackson that the book is nothing to do with them and Reflecting on all the godless, inhumane things that she did to all of the maids
You just put the biggest smile on my face 😁 thats awesome i just occurred to me Hilly? H-I-L-L-A-R-Y COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE HER FULL NAME?? Aren't you tired miss H I L L A R Y
This scene is proof of the power of choosing empathy over ignorance. We all have a choice in how we deal with prejudice, but the most powerful thing you can do is try to understand what someone does, why they do it and moreover try to show to them that it does not have to be that way. Hate feeds off hate, responding in opposition only always lends power to the source of hatred, the only way you can truly diminish it is with kindness and compassion... 'Ain't you tired?'.
Not feeling your statement in its entirety. Did u see the film 'Rosewood'? Please do if u haven't. Sometimes u have 2 respond in the only language the enemy understands. Malcolm X said it first. Blacks and others cannot 'work with the confederacy.' In order 2 get 2 a better place. No way no how.
“Ain’t you tired? Ain’t you tired?..” I love that part.. it’s so true for nasty vile people. You can’t keep manipulating people, fcking people over & think karma don’t have your name on her list. It’s tiring to walk around with that kinda spirit
I'm well aware that in the book, Hilly is a good mother to her children. (It does make her less one-dimensional as a person). But I also won't deny that Aibileen has a point: as long as Hilly remains set in her ways, she'll eventually find herself all alone in a world that is continually growing diverse.
Oh my God, I can't thank you ENOUGH for uploading this! I've been looking for it everywhere! It's just so touching, get's me everytime. If Viola does not win, I'll be so upset. It's so well-deserved, and this scene just takes the cake. Thanks again! :)
I feel the same way. I was CRUSHED when she didn't win at the Oscars but I have since recovered b/c I know her day is coming. SHE WILL WIN AN OSCAR. I just know it.
I liked the way the film ended better than the book-to see Hilly finally cry and to realize that she WAS tired....she knew she had done it all to herself.Excellent film.
I worked as a caddy at a very prestigious country club one summer on Long Island and I met people just like hilly. One woman said and I quote “There are two many colored folks in these golf clubs today I remember when it was just whites”. She then demanded I hand her a golf club and I was so mad at her my hand was sneaking.
It really shocks me that in this day and age people can be so racist! I used to work in customer service and this guy racially abused one of my colleagues I won't say what was said but it was pretty bad and I lost it completely before my colleague could respond I told the guy he had better get his fat ass out of my shop because if I have to come behind the counter to throw him out I'd do it with such force he's burn a hole in the concrete so deep I would be able to hand him over to Satan personally!! He was quite shocked but I've never seen someone back away and exit so fast! 😂😂
ThatGirl KayKay Well we kind of saw her breakdown when she hilariously confronted Skeeter with her raggedy ass. This scene, she didn't need to say a word because she COULDN'T say a word. Everything Abilene was saying about her was true and she knew it. She cried and was nearly sick after she heard the truth about her. It was perfect.
I loved The Help! Although in my opinion it wasn't as good as the book, I love the strength and the energy that everybody brought to it. Viola is so fearless in this scene, and the scene that follows when she walks out of the house and down the street in the middle of the road, fearless. That's what makes a good actress.
I was fascinated by how Hilly was scared when Abilene approached her. I guess she never thought a black woman could stand up to her like her to that, look her at her face to face and spill the truth about her without fear. She realized she’s just a little human being and has nothing godly in her. It’s already difficult for her to accept that she ate Minnie’s shit and everyone knows, now Abilene shows her that she is nothing but a liar. To me, the most pathetic person was in that movie was Abilene’s boss, what was she really gaining from Hilly to be so submissive to her?
@neonarcissist At last!! Why isn't anybody speaking about Bryce?! She's such an amazing and underrated artist. She's been during her whole life doing the good/sweet girl character and now as a villian she's incredible, she can do all she wants. Viola is amazing, I love her so much but Bryce deserved at least a nomination for Best supporting Actress for this instead Jessica Chanstain (love Jessica too, but Bryce was out of this world)
I love this movie the help and I tell ceclia foot I love her in this movie. People don't know how it's still really like that in places I'm from Mississippi and my mom got her kids out MS ASAP!! The help speaks the truth! But we ain't there no more and it will never be again!!
"And you died Miss Hilly, and you died." Says a lot. Even on this issue of who should win an oscar. Not that I follow those anyway. But I'd have given both women an award. Great movie.
Definitely a great scene. I felt that both Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard knocked it out of the park with their performances. Howard, in my eyes, was really someone you could DESPISE. That, by all accounts, is the mark of a GREAT performance. Viola, in many ways, stole the scenes she was in just by her facial expressions. Her character was very subdued and had this air of strength to her.
when i watched the movie yesterday...i was laughing so hard because, i thought she said "Ain't you died Ms.Hilly? ; Ain't you died?" but now i know thanks to the subtitles she said "tired."
You're so right, but I look at the range of emotions that an actor must portray: from middle age to aged, confused, melancholic and demented. Viola was great, but her role didnt offer her much opportunity to vary her emotions from indifferent to angry and very angry. I've watched both movies twice, as probably did the Oscar people who decided the winner. Thanks for sharing :-)
@WinterAffair Shakespeare in Love was a pretty darn good film, its nice to have a change of films every once in a while. Best example of how it could be about the performance and not about the politics: Mo'Nique winning for Precious.

The reaction that Hilly had over the remark Abilene made, is spot on
You can see how dead Abileen is behind her eyes from years of dealing with this shit.
This will always be my favorite Viola Davis performance.
ColorfulConfessions I think you mean Lou Anne. She suffered from depression and her maid was the only one who helped her through her bad spells.
Wait yes! That's it! Her, lol.
Yeah that was one of many things that wasn't included in the film that I wish was. Another one was how Aibleen got the job of writing the column in the newspaper that she was helping Skeeter with
I do remember reading the book and wondering why Lou Anne wasn't included in the movie
Those words were the biggest slap in the face Hilly ever NEEDED her whole life! =)
+Daniel Selk What do you think she meant when she asked her "Ain't you tired?"
And why do you think Hilly is crying at the end.. is it because she knows she's guilty?
I think the reason Hilley crying is because that is the first time she ever been told the truth about herself and she can't handle it.
After this Hilly's going to go to her grave with two burdens:
Convincing the women of Jackson that the book is nothing to do with them
and
Reflecting on all the godless, inhumane things that she did to all of the maids
Chilling scene. She didn't have a word of retaliation because it was true !
Racist bigot.
America after the 2016 election. Ain't you tired?
You just put the biggest smile on my face 😁 thats awesome i just occurred to me Hilly? H-I-L-L-A-R-Y COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE HER FULL NAME?? Aren't you tired miss H I L L A R Y
Yeah Go Trump!! Fuck the SJWs and Hillary!
NOOPE WE READY TO GO AGAIN
Capitol Hill...
Tired of everything being political....😏
“All you do is scare & lie to try to get what you want”
“You’re a Godless woman”
Ms Hilly was the OG “Karen”...
"All you do is scare and lie to try to get what you want; You a godless woman ain't you tired Miss Hilly? Ain't you tired?"
❤
Between this and the scene where the mother reveals the truth about Constantine always gives me glossy eyes.
chills. every time.
Abilene was a true southern belle.
i wonder what was going through Bryce Dallas Howard's(hilly) mind at that moment... its too convincing...
Racism, not prejudice.
She should have won in her heart wrenching performance in Doubt. She is great in this one too. It is time they award the Best Actress award to her!
"Your a godless woman!" I baleave Hilly just got pouwned!
Incredible scene. Love it!
Aibileen: And all that you need to know is that you work for me
Miss Hilly: So thats it huh? we're just some kind of Maid Squad
Oh my God, I can't thank you ENOUGH for uploading this! I've been looking for it everywhere! It's just so touching, get's me everytime. If Viola does not win, I'll be so upset. It's so well-deserved, and this scene just takes the cake. Thanks again! :)
"You're a godless woman."
Being called a Godless woman should’ve hurt her soul!! It hurt mine and she wasn’t even talking to me!!! 💯
Literally one of the most moving scenes i have ever seen in a film, excellently done.
This is one of THE most powerful scenes I have ever seen in a movie.
Viola better win!!!! She did super amazing, I loved the movie, and the role she played.
Incredible acting from the entire cast
Her line delivery is so powerful.
I agree, especially the way she leans into the word “Godless,” as if it’s a word she has never said out loud.
"Ain't you tired, Miss Hilly? Ain't you tired?"
One of the best moments from the film, imo :D
I feel the same way. I was CRUSHED when she didn't win at the Oscars but I have since recovered b/c I know her day is coming. SHE WILL WIN AN OSCAR. I just know it.
I liked the way the film ended better than the book-to see Hilly finally cry and to realize that she WAS tired....she knew she had done it all to herself.Excellent film.
Those eyes she makes when her arm is grabbed alone is Great acting!
When words are more powerful than a punch.
No one needed CRT to teach the lesson of this movie & book. It touched me just as deeply then as it does now. ❤
"Ain't you tired Miss Hilly?...... Ain't you tired?"
Love this line
Have you ever met a black business owner or CEO?
viola is my girl.
No, she's not tired. Those people keep going and never change.
I wished to see Hilly breakdown in to tears and a screaming fit so badly.. Especially since this is where she needed it most
ThatGirl KayKay Well we kind of saw her breakdown when she hilariously confronted Skeeter with her raggedy ass. This scene, she didn't need to say a word because she COULDN'T say a word. Everything Abilene was saying about her was true and she knew it. She cried and was nearly sick after she heard the truth about her. It was perfect.
this scene gave me chills
This scene gave me chills. It was so intense.
Every time I watch this scene makes me choke 😢
I know you're tired Ms. Whitley, but Yahwae loves you, and he's never tired. Lay your troubles down sweetheart, one day at a time.
I feel like the person who was hurt the most by this was Mae Mobley. Hope Hilly’s “friendship” was worth it 😢
I loved The Help! Although in my opinion it wasn't as good as the book, I love the strength and the energy that everybody brought to it. Viola is so fearless in this scene, and the scene that follows when she walks out of the house and down the street in the middle of the road, fearless. That's what makes a good actress.
viola is a great actress.
The only bad thing about Abileen being fired is that she was the only one that really cared about her employers over weight daughter.
Hollywood loves to nominate for these type of roles..."The Green Mile", "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Help" and the list goes on.
powerful scene!
Powerful scene
I was fascinated by how Hilly was scared when Abilene approached her. I guess she never thought a black woman could stand up to her like her to that, look her at her face to face and spill the truth about her without fear. She realized she’s just a little human being and has nothing godly in her. It’s already difficult for her to accept that she ate Minnie’s shit and everyone knows, now Abilene shows her that she is nothing but a liar. To me, the most pathetic person was in that movie was Abilene’s boss, what was she really gaining from Hilly to be so submissive to her?
brilliant
@neonarcissist At last!! Why isn't anybody speaking about Bryce?! She's such an amazing and underrated artist. She's been during her whole life doing the good/sweet girl character and now as a villian she's incredible, she can do all she wants. Viola is amazing, I love her so much but Bryce deserved at least a nomination for Best supporting Actress for this instead Jessica Chanstain (love Jessica too, but Bryce was out of this world)
They out there.
This scene is soo heartbreaking in the book
you go girl
I love this scene! Viola Davis is awesome. Exactly like it is in the book
Agreed. Completely.
Such a good actress makes you wanna make Miss Hilly choke on her teeth.
deserved an oscar
@neonarcissist
I agree... she was outstanding throughout the whole film!
i lovee this MOVIE!!
Favorite scene. I wish I could say this
I´m afraid Karens never get tired.
It’s “ain’t you tired”
I had to admit i understood the meaning of the question.
Ain't you tired?
Im just got nothing more to show.
When she said Elizabeth call the police when a black women stood up to her, it made me realise that in 2019 nothing has changed... so sad😢
Give it up, Hilly. You're only digging yourself deeper into a hole.
best movie ever
Definitely a great scene. I felt that both Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard knocked it out of the park with their performances. Howard, in my eyes, was really someone you could DESPISE. That, by all accounts, is the mark of a GREAT performance. Viola, in many ways, stole the scenes she was in just by her facial expressions. Her character was very subdued and had this air of strength to her.
Thank you! Rarely do I encounter commenters who are as gracious and agreeable as you.
0:32 is the scene where you go damn, she's gonna win that Oscar.
Sadly, people like Hilly don’t get what they deserve in real life.
when i watched the movie yesterday...i was laughing so hard because, i thought she said "Ain't you died Ms.Hilly? ; Ain't you died?" but now i know thanks to the subtitles she said "tired."
Thanks for sharing :-)
omg this made me laugh so hard
If someone said I’m. God-less woman I would be so upset
“Woman”: singular
“Women”: plural
The entire internet seems absolutely incapable of understanding the difference.
@WinterAffair Shakespeare in Love was a pretty darn good film, its nice to have a change of films every once in a while. Best example of how it could be about the performance and not about the politics: Mo'Nique winning for Precious.
Viola deserved that Oscar. No other actress topped her performance.
Ain't you tired??? " The Help"
what a good movie.
