  • I believe this "catchy" tune was written in 1898, just at the beginning of the ragtime era. (I have seen versions dated in the 30's, but have also seen sheet music of it from the 1890's.) It was Grandpa's favorite piano piece, and he often asked Grandma to play it for him. The tune rattled around in my head all these years, and I finally had to learn it for myself.
I saw one music sheet that listed the author as C. K. Howell, but usually he/she is listed as C. R. Howell.
I hope this was fun to hear in spite of all my mistakes. Thanks for watching!!! ;-)

My Mom, God rest her soul, played this for her recital back in the early 1940s, and she played for us when we were growing up. There were 7 of us kids, and we’d do the bunny hop around the house; we had so much fun. I loved watching her, and listening to her play the piano. Now, listening to you, brings back all those cherished memories. Thank you

About 60 years ago my father offered me $5 if I could play Rustic Dance all the way through without a mistake. Haven't collected yet and never will on this earth, but I have had a lot of enjoyment and frustration trying.

My cousin, rest her soul, played this for me - because I asked her to all the time - when I was pre-school. I have not heard it more than a couple of times in the last 66 or 67 years, but I can still hum along from memory.

I have a copy on my iPhone music app of me playing this tune but only with the title of “Grandma used to play this.” 🥴 Thank you for identifying the title/composer for me. And what fun listening to you play.

In our family, our grandmother's sister, our Aunt Ora, played this piece each time she visited our home. She called it, "Birds in the Brook". Thanks for posting the video. As many other people have said, it brings back happy memories.

My Grandmother played Rustic Dance on her Baldwin Baby Grand piano everytime I asked her to. I loved watching her play. She was old school, born in 1900.

It was copyrighted by G.Schirmer, Inc. in 1899 and the author was C.R. Howell. The children from our graduating class danced to it at the end of the year in a theater. It brings me back good memories...

Back in the day, every morning after prayers, a music student had to play a march for the students to leave the auditorium. When it was my turn I choose this piece because it is so lively. Now I look back and remember those wonderful years.

I love to hear this played. My sister played it and when I took lessons I wanted to play it...and did. Then many years later my family bought be a Grand and I re-learned it at about age 54(?).

I love this song! When I was a little girl about 4 or 5 years old, my younger sister and I would ask our mother to play "the skipping song" and we would skip around the living room. I didn't know the actual title of the song until many years later when I began playing the piano myself.

So this is what Amaryllis is playing in The Music Man! I recognized it when it showed up in the soundtrack of the movie my dad was watching, but he thought it was an original piece by that movies composer. The only clue I could get was the sheet music for the beginning of the scene, which took some time to find.

    • @Ritty109
      @Ritty109 4 месяца назад

Yes, when I first heard Amaryllis playing it, I remembered my grandfather playing it in the 1950s when I was very young. He would have been taking music lessons around the turn of the century, if my math is correct. And The Music Man took place in July 1912 (Mayor Shinn said so!)

Oh my God! This is the song that my grandmother would play for me whenever I asked (which was ALL the time)! She majored in music from Connecticut College in 1938. I can't believe I remembered the name of the song. THANK YOU for posting this and playing it. Happy tears are welling in my eyes and I can't stop smiling.
Now on to find the sheet music?

I came across your great video today while researching some information from the "Music Man" film. "Rustic Dance" is the song that Amaryllis is practicing at the Paroos' house before she plays her cross-hand piece, "Goodnight My Someone." "Rustic Dance" was composed by C.R. (Cyrus Ryerson) Howell, a Canadian minister, artist and musician. I've seen his birth date listed as 1857, but haven't yet found the date that he passed away.

Do you mind me asking what stand you are using for your P70? I am about to buy a second hand one, but the official stand is not available anywhere anymore. I notice yours is very sturdy compared to other RUclips videos.

By watching the 5th finger on your left hand it looks like your playing this piece in the key of B flat, am I right or am I wrong? I got this song in the key of C, it is in the Eckstein adult piano book, by Maxwell Eckstein. Nice catchey tune, I think I will try and learn this song. Thanks for showing this one.
