Great video. I'm a DIY mechanic and I'm well familiar with doing the timing belt on my car. Unfortunately I'm on my 2nd gates water pump in 2 years. I couldn't understand why the pumps keep failing until I realised that I've been adding tap water to the concentrated coolant. I'll never do that again !!
Thanks for very detailed video, my peugot van with same 8v 1.6hdi engine had a snapped belt. Looking at my fuel pump pulley it has two cut outs 180 degrees from each other. Does it matter which one lines up with hole.
I found that you had to rotate the crank about 8 times to get the fuel pump with the 2 holes to line up (and when it did the the cam pin went in much further strangely) Also if iirc its neither of the 2 holes in the fuel pump that actually accept the pin; it's a hole further out to the edge on the same 'spoke' as one of the 2 holes. Roughly the 3 o'clock position I think
Further to my earlier comment. Hi, I would appreciate your advice please. I bought a Dayco kit online. Strangely the belt tensioner plastic bag was open. The others in the box were sealed. Is it possible to damage the tensioner before it is installed by removing the pin ? When I came to line up the hole with the new belt on, I had to turn the allen key clockwise to line it up. However the arrow stated to turn it anticlockwise. I am concerned this could really cause a problem. What do you think , please
Always abit concerning if someone’s been in there and your not sure why.. it’s hard to say without seeing it but if your unsure I’d see about getting it swopped

Such a brilliant video 👍 Is it a risky first time procedure? I've nerver done timing belts before but many other replacements like brakes, schock absorbers, coils etc. Whats the most tricky part in timing belt replacement? Thanks!
Thanks, cam belts are allways bit risky first time,, but if your fairly competent just take your time and there not bad to do really .. as long as you make sure everything timed up correctly and the tensioner etc are all tight you can't go too wrong .. always turn the engine over twice after replacement to double check the timing etc 👍

Seems to go away when I hit the gas pedal again. Do you have any idea what to check up? The cam belt is installed with the correct torques. Excellent video, it's giving me the confidence to do this myself. Just a thought, Do you use lock tight on the threads when refitting the Bolts?. Thanks again for the video.
Hello, excellent video thank you. Would appreciate your help please. I have measured my new belt and it is exactly the same size as the old one with the same number of teeth. However there is no way I will be able to stretch the belt onto the tensioner. The pin on the tensioner is in the middle of the slot (I bought a brand new Dayco kit) and the tensioner wheel looks too close to the other replacement idler wheel. I am reluctant to take out the pin on the tensioner before it is all set up to give me some more slack. Thank you
Do you ever renew the crank shaft bolt? Roughly what do you estimate is the torque after the angular tightening, 200Nm? Could this stretch the bolt and require it's replacement, or is the bolt really chunky? I ask as i had one snap after 18000 miles on a 1.9d passat, but i think it may have failed as the vw garage didn't do it up tight enough, as by their own admission they had no tool to lock the timing gears.
@diydaly Thanks for your speedy reply! On that advice, I will make sure to order a timing belt kit that includes a new crankshaft bolt. They don't all seem to include a bolt and there is a confusing price range! Not sure which make is best for my old engine.
Very explicative video. Could be the same process for the 1.5 hdi psa. I saw the timing belt scheme are both the same, parts also are the same.1.5 has an internal little chain to time the two cam, except from this, is comparable with 1.6. What do you think? Is the same procedure, and at what mileage/ year should I perform it? Thank you in advace
yeah it is pretty much the same mate 👍👍 the vary bit ive seen some intervals say 150,000 miles / 10 years .. personally I always say 100,000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first
Thank you so much . Peugeot it's very optimistic and tolerant when it comes about intervals. Here in Italy I heard some people having trouble with timing kit belt well before 100k km, 60k miles. It's a gamble. Some are also scared by the squeaky sound coming from the crankshaft pulley especially when accelerating after idling. Dealers always say it's normal, but some driver broke the pulley with costly damages. I appreciate your work, have a good Saturday.
Excellent as always mate. Have you ever done a cambelt change on a 2.0 tdci fitted to either the mk3 focus or mk4 mondeo . I've just done mine and after sparking it up there was this whirring noise coming from the cam sprocket, have you come across this before or can you think what the issue might be as so far no one can tell me.
Hi , If you check my timing belt playlist there’s one for a mondeo 2.0 tdci.. on the one. You did has in got the large keyway gap on the crank pulley? Allowing quite a lot of float? It’s easy to get them a tooth out when that’s the case.. if so you might find there’s a pin hole in the flywheel to lock it off properly
Thanks for replying.I did watch it and I did the same as you and every other video on the subject I watched. Yes there is a hole in the flywheel which I pinned up but what I have noticed since doing the job a few times is there's a bit of movement in the crank even when pinned up so you could be right in that it's a tooth out however, the noise did stop 30secs after I started It once but that was due to the tensioner not being located on the dowel and once correctly fitted the noise was back. Its all a bit of a mystery which I'd like more information on before pulling it apart again.
Hi diydaly, brilliant video sorted my ds3 timing belt out but have a sort of unrelated question I need to change my rocker gasket since its a part of the timing cover do I need to remove all timing covers and engine mount to do this!? Terrible design if true
Hello when you look at the fuel pump especially the locking tool there is quite a lot of play between the two knuckles sometimes one knuckle is closer to the hole sometimes in the middle so my question is do the knuckles have to be exact so that the locking tool is between the knuckles or it doesn't matter where the knuckles are as long as it is in that place
I've just done my van and the tensioner is slightly off center after turning the engine over six times all 3 timing pins still fit in perfectly I have done approx 100miles since doing it and all seems fine is the tensioner slightly of center anything to worry about?
Neh it’s be fine mate , there a little tolerance on the tensioner .. if it’s too tight they can be noisy , along as it’s only just off I don’t think you’ll have any trouble
The best video I have found for this jobb!👌Although I have one wuestion regarding the bolt torque for crank pulley as it says 35 Nm +190 degrees ! What does that mean ??
@@diydaly 👍Great ! Need to lock the flywheel then ! I am thinking of thecwaterpump change ! Is this necessary to do ? My Citroen e-Hdi 1,6 has run only 85.000 miles but it is 11 years old ! Since therevis no change interval stipulated by manufacurer I am asking if it is necessary ? Have you experienced this simple pump ever failing before the stipulated 160.000 mile cambelt change ?
Hi mate, can the water pump be changed here without the timing belt, or is it necessary to do both? I have a suspicion I'm being taken for a ride at the garage. My timing chain shouldn't be due for change but the water pump seal is leaking. Any advice appreciated! 👍
You can just fit a water pump without renewing the belt but the belt has to come off to do the job.. personally I would never fit an old belt unless it wasn’t very old at all .. just makes sense to renew it at the same time 👍
hi i am changing belt on DS3 1.6 HDI. the crank and cam pulleys are lining up with the hole but fuel pump pulley two teeth are out and not where the hole is. Can i remove the belt and adjust the fuel pump pulley to where it should be then put the new belt on? many thanks
Wierd question probably, timed the cam and crank gear, but i ser that the fuel pump is not in Line with the hole that it should be alligned to! But the car ran perfectly so i dont think there is anything wrong! I will just mark the fuel pump and put the new belt on! Any ideas on why do? Thanks, lovely video
There not strictly a timed pump (for running reasons) so it may still run ok.. it’s more for balancing .. it should really be set right through! I’d say someone’s not done it correctly in the past
@@diydaly An update on this issue-car started overheating (Peugeot 208 1.6hdi 2017) ten days after a service with coolant flush.Tried bleeding and then changed the thermostat-£250 from Peugeot and a real pain to change-after,the car was exactly the same with the overheating issue-the eventual problem was the water pump had come loose on the pulley shaft!Expensive lesson learnt🙄.Brilliant channel btw.Hope this helps someone else.
i have to have a look at mine, i thnk the tensioners to tight its making a whurring type noise on idle. Just bought the van i didnt think the fuel pumped needed to be timed mines a berlingo 1.6 hdi 2012. Any ideas?
they dont strictly but for balancing reasons it does want setting to the correct point , could be to tight .. if its still whining with the aux belt off it must be on that side
@@gregorydobson4307 yeh the fuel may have ran back if you've had the fuel lines off.. try priming the fuel first then maybe a sniff of easy start.. if its not logging a fault your crank signal must be ok.. the fuel pump timing wont actually stop it from running on this engine
Hello sir I have same engine 130k miles timing belt wather pump is done around 10k miles ago . In the morning 10 on idle I have a noise coming from timing belt area... What can be sir? Thank you
Impossible to say without hearing it tbh , you’d need to remove the auxiliary belt first see if the noise goes.. if it does you know the fault is on the auxiliary side
The back plate on crank gear broke off mine and it’s scored the engine and the belts been running on the block lol, simpleish job always bites me on the arse
Hi I was wondering if anyone could tell me the answer to these questions, I have a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 2008 , I have 2 questions ?? Are the Torque settings the same for the Water pump - and the Tensioner pully and the Idler Pully as for this car ? Question 2 - Do I need to set the position of the Fuel pump on the C4 Grand Picasso 2008 as with this car ? My car is the Diesel version. Thanks Ed.
@@diydaly Thanks I really appreciate the advice, my car is a Diesel by the way. I live in Ireland and I was quoted 700 Euro to do the timing belt and replace the Drive belt and another 220 Euro for a service, that's almost what the car is worth. So I'm going to have a go myself and hope for the best. Thanks for your help
@@diydaly I COCKED UP, I made highly detailed notes so that I wouldn't mess up and I got distracted, Long story short , I didn't put the timing pins in place before I removed the Timing belt . What should I do now ???
@@topcat7091 have you just taken the belt off an not moved everything ? If so put the belt on and turn it to the timing positions.. if it wont turn over by hand all the way then the timing is quite far out.. get them to the marks and if there not 100% lined up (as you've got the timing slightly out) just take the belt off then move the pulleys to the positions and pin them up
@@diydaly I changed the timing chain that connects both camshafts(the chain slipped 5 teeth during timing belt change due to slack chain and the engine was run and revved like this hence new chain and tensioner). After putting it all back together I get thick white smoke from exhaust, diesel spurting out of leak offs and possibly other diesel leaks from injector, engine covered in diesel. So I think raw diesel going into exhaust valves, any idea what would cause this? Rockers and cams looked ok on visual inspection but maybe valves got damaged on slipped chain. Any ideas?

@@OuterSpaceHoppa Personally id go for a gates kit
@diydaly Thanks! Just looked up the Gates kit and it comes with the crank bolt at a reasonable price too. Thanks again.

How much would a garage charge for this job?
Around £450 - £500 depending on the garage labour rate / quality of parts used
Very explicative video.
@@samuelevanni8192 Yeah I always like to do my own earlier than the recommended! peace of mind then 👌
The same
What do you think of these cars. Just got one and sending to the mechanic for full service and cambelt. It has done 86k and 2011
The engines are fairly decent tbf , the Citroens do have a few problems, but what doesn’t nowadays!
Love mine , 2.0 diesel, 2012 and only needed a new starter , battery .
@@unionflag9609 hmm yeah it’s abit hard to say without looking myself! Hope you get it sorted mate 👍
Hi diydaly, brilliant video sorted my ds3 timing belt out but have a sort of unrelated question I need to change my rocker gasket since its a part of the timing cover do I need to remove all timing covers and engine mount to do this!? Terrible design if true
If your referring to the lower rocker cover , yeah there a right job! The hold the cam down so involves stripping a lot down 😬
Hello when you look at the fuel pump especially the locking tool there is quite a lot of play between the two knuckles sometimes one knuckle is closer to the hole sometimes in the middle so my question is do the knuckles have to be exact so that the locking tool is between the knuckles or it doesn't matter where the knuckles are as long as it is in that place
Anywhere in that gap is fine mate 👍
I've just done my van and the tensioner is slightly off center after turning the engine over six times all 3 timing pins still fit in perfectly I have done approx 100miles since doing it and all seems fine is the tensioner slightly of center anything to worry about?
Neh it’s be fine mate , there a little tolerance on the tensioner .. if it’s too tight they can be noisy , along as it’s only just off I don’t think you’ll have any trouble
Do you have the torque specifications for the tensioner, crankshaft bolt, and water pump bolts? Thanks!
They are listed in the description
Thanks for the video. Do you remember the size of the lock tool at 2:30? How many mm?
Think it’s 8mm
The best video I have found for this jobb!👌Although I have one wuestion regarding the bolt torque for crank pulley as it says 35 Nm +190 degrees ! What does that mean ??
Glad it helped! Thanks , you need to do 35nm first then 190 degrees .. using a angle gauge
@@diydaly 👍Great ! Need to lock the flywheel then ! I am thinking of thecwaterpump change ! Is this necessary to do ? My Citroen e-Hdi 1,6
has run only 85.000 miles but it is 11 years old ! Since therevis no change interval stipulated by manufacurer I am asking if it is necessary ? Have you experienced this simple pump ever failing before the stipulated 160.000 mile cambelt change ?
@@andersvikingsvensson8762 yeah I have known them to fail tbh , I definelty would do the pump if your doing the belt 👍
Hi mate, can the water pump be changed here without the timing belt, or is it necessary to do both? I have a suspicion I'm being taken for a ride at the garage. My timing chain shouldn't be due for change but the water pump seal is leaking. Any advice appreciated! 👍
You can just fit a water pump without renewing the belt but the belt has to come off to do the job.. personally I would never fit an old belt unless it wasn’t very old at all .. just makes sense to renew it at the same time 👍
I could see that are 2 types of timing belt kits for Citroen one with oval shape and one round shape. I think this refers to the belt teeths
Thanks
Not sure tbh mate I haven’t come across any choice for this
would you know anything about the fuse box? My horn/washer pump has gone and i've been told that its corrosion withing the fuse box under the engine
Some of them do suffer with fuse box issues
hi i am changing belt on DS3 1.6 HDI. the crank and cam pulleys are lining up with the hole but fuel pump pulley two teeth are out and not where the hole is. Can i remove the belt and adjust the fuel pump pulley to where it should be then put the new belt on? many thanks
Yeah just adjust the fuel pump as you need to 👍
Wierd question probably, timed the cam and crank gear, but i ser that the fuel pump is not in Line with the hole that it should be alligned to!
Alright thanks, but this is the first time it has been changed! Belt is new from the fabric!
Excellent video. Are these 1.6hdi engines notorious for difficult coolant bleeding?Think I’ve got an airlock in one that I can’t bleed.
Yeah can be a pain at times!

@DIYDaly thanks mate yes it is with aux belt off
@@oliverhworld1164 😬 yeah be worth checking then , they can make quite a whine when too tight
Hi Can you help. Put new belt on, all pins were used. Engine turns over but wont fire. Could my fuel pump be 180 deg out.
Are you sure you haven’t caught the crank sensor or damaged the pickup? (The ring that the crank sensor reads from)
I was very careful and have checked them. Think my OBDII readers would show a fault as the ecu would think they were out of sync
Also had all my fuel injector lines off so could it be air lock ??
@@gregorydobson4307 yeh the fuel may have ran back if you've had the fuel lines off.. try priming the fuel first then maybe a sniff of easy start.. if its not logging a fault your crank signal must be ok.. the fuel pump timing wont actually stop it from running on this engine

Thanks Ed.
Yeah if yours is the 1.6 hdi then it will be the same settings and you will need to set the fuel pump the same too
