    I heard it described really well. The OG was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger, PTX cover is the pleading and Geoff's version is the sadness and reflection afterwards. Every time I listen to this cover, I cry. It touches my soul, and I feel like I am seeing the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Absolutely amazing cover. Great reaction!!

    Geoff has said that when he is considering a cover he listens to the original many times. Then he listens to every cover he can find. If he can't add something, he walks away. Why do something someone else has already done, right?
    For the most part, Geoff's solo work is just him and his wife, Kathy. Occasionally he will bring in extra camera, lights and makeup. In this one, Layne Stein, the beat boxer with Voiceplay handled the camera and Eli (ELL-ee) Jacobson, Voiceplay's tenor, did the lighting.
    I would go with Ain't No Sunshine and Shenandoah next.

      Possibly one of the single most soulful covers of all time!!! And the magic isn't just in the performance, but just as much in the brilliant work Geoff did re-arranging the song to fit his unique style and range, without losing the essential feel that the original song carries.

    Hi there!
    One good song to get a feeling of what he can do, and not only in terms of "absolute low", is "Ain't no sunshine", originally by Bill Withers. He totally respected it, yet he made it totally his own. 🙂
    Some more suggestions:
    - "Far over the Misty Mountains cold", from the movie "The Hobbit". All the 4 guys in the video are him. A beautiful song that sounds as if it was written for him. 🙂
    - "Shenandoah"... An old song that he covered beautifully.
    - "Till then": a 1944 song written from the POV of a soldier who asks his girlfriend to wait for him "till then", when he will be back from the war. So sweet... 🙂
    - "Man of constant sorrow", he gave to it a different mood and really made it his own. 🙂
    - "16 tons", old song about the life of coal miners... Won't spoil anything. 🙂
    - "Way down", Elvis' song with a really REALLY deep note at the end 😁, showcasing his sense of humour;
    - "High and dry", originally by Radiohead... The only one in which he doesn't harmonise with himself, but shows off in terms of range and low notes 😉.
    - Ghost riders in the sky"... Released as an Halloween song, but to me it's just a GREAT song. 🙂
    - "God rest you merry gentlemen", I know it's not the right time of the year, but... 😉
    - His Halloween stuff (hilarious), "Monster Mash" and "Headless Horseman", the latter has a last note that will rumble your shoes off 😅.
    There could be more, but it's ok for now 😁
    Subsribed in anticipation for more Voiceplay and Geoff. 🙂
    See you next time!

    I believe that this is the first video where Geoff's "chorus of clones" (I'm trademarking that phrase!) helps with the sound, but doesn't make a visual appearance in the video.
    Nothing like getting a little bit of help from your friends - VoicePlay members Eli provided the lighting, and Layne provided the steadicam work. And nice to see the piano from "Till Then" making another appearance!
    Recommendations: The Bare Necessities (the first solo video Geoff put out when he started his solo channel during the lockdown), Blackbird (another one showing Geoff's range), Way Down (the "chorus of clones" get names!), Monster Mash (no need to save it for Halloween).

    • @steveeverett1736
      @steveeverett1736 Год назад +2

      2 more things - the woman in Monster Mash is his wife and on his own page Geoff also has several readings (poems) from literary works, so yes, Geoff is attempting to do it all. I first learned of Geoff when I was searching for acapella groups ie PTX and Home Free (their cover of End of the Road is incredible) discovered VP, then focused on Geoff a bit more. Also Aileen, have you reacted to any of Tina Guo, she's a confirmed Metal fan and the main Cellist for Hans Zimmers shows so she's done the Wonder Woman theme, quite a few LOTR pieces and many more (Yeah, I know, just one more rabbit hole to explore)

  • @danjoda755
    @danjoda755 Год назад +6

    That was a nice interpretation, Aileen! Someone else said, and I agree with the notion that Simon and Garfunkel issued a plea, Disturbed added the frustration that the plea went unheard, Pentatonix restyled it and tried again to send forth an appeal, and Geoff Castellucci and company also restyled it. Geoff is interesting in that he's capable of reaching down to that vocal range of "basso profundo" that crosses into what's called "Mongolian throat singing".
    Thank you for cheering up a subdued Sunday, haven't been feeling so hot, but you brought some smiles for this old buzzard. ❤💐😊😇

    As a bass/baritone vocalist, we tend to have a wide vocal range.
    As far as HOW we can get that deep... Bass singers usually experience strong resonance in their chest and throat. A lowered larynx can help you extend your low range. Tension, or constriction, within the vocal folds and above them can help you sing lower. And lastly, vocal range and timbre are heavily influenced by their anatomical structure.
    As with all vocals, A LOT is happening.
    Bands with low vocals... Type O Negative, Dreadful Shadows, Sisters of Mercy, Tears of Passion......

    Simon and Garfunkle's version is the warning. Disturbed's version is the anger. Pentatonix's version is the longing. Geoff's version is the hope. Not like a grand, bold hope, but the... "we're not there yet, but we've still got a chance of making it." Peyton Parish has done an interesting cover of the song, as well.
    Also, if you want rock from acapella, you need to check out VoicePlay, which Geoff is the bass of. They've done songs like Nothing Else Matters, Dream On... heck, their recent cover of Seven Nation Army is... _powerful_, as is their recent cover of Valhalla Calling. One of the founding members, Eli (Elly, not E-lie) has some _amazing_ rock tenor vocals.
