THE MYSTERY STONE and Cryptic Message. What Does It Say?

- Is the Mystery Stone a hoax or genuine? Also know as Decalogue Stone and Commandment Rock, it was discovered in 1880. Frank Hibbing, an archeologist, examined the stone in 1933 and is said to think it was authentic.
George E Morehouse estimated the inscription to be anywhere from 500 to 2,000 years old. Others think it’s a hoax.
Apparently the Samaritan Mezuzah writing shows modern Hebrew punctuation and grammatical errors. But to this day, it still remains a mystery.

Let us know whether you think the mystery stone is genuine or a hoax.
We post new content every Tuesday
oddly, all i can find is that it's a hoax and not even a good one
I think its a hoax but its still pretty neat.
genuine what? It's genuine scratches on a rock, likely from the 1970s or something
Its a mystery 🫤
@@PinInTheAtlas it's mysterious, but not old. Certainly not prehistoric. Just a bored white kid scratching in the rock
I know of 2 different locations here in Utah, that have near identical rock carvings to each other, though they are hundreds of miles apart! They are not associated with Indian petroglyphs, however. More akin to what you might find in ancient Middle East areas. There are those that say they're fake, and some say genuine. But, nobody knows just how old they are! One thing is certain...sites like these are sure to spark debate and conversation! Which is a good thing! Thanks for the show!
So true Kerry. And we all love a mystery.
That was absolutely so interesting. I think I had heard of that rock.🤔 Thank you for taking us along, on this mysterious journey. I agree. Maybe keeping the rock's history a mystery, is meant to be. Thank you, Andrea and Steven, for another great video.☀️💛🏜 🪨
Thanks Rhonda. You may enjoy reading our blog post. We wrote this a few years ago before we did YT.

Amazing stone. Reminds of that book that was found that no one can decipher. Gramma Candy
as a professional archaeologist who's seen many thousands of petroglyphs, those definitely look modern. Just scratches on the rock, probably just a few decades old
Hi Steve and Andrea - great video, very atmospheric in the bleak Nrew Mexico desert; almost seems like the beginning of a Hammer Film! Is the inscription authentically ancient? I have no clue, having zero knowledge of such things, but mysteries are intriguing and fun.
No one knows Brian. It’s a mystery.
I am confused by all of the film of these two walking.
What is that about?
Gives you an idea of the surroundings, the landscape and the distance we hiked.
Had to prove this was in the middle of nowhere, I guess.
That is really amazing, now I have to go learn more about this !?!
Since the 30’s, I doubt it’s a hoax, but you guys sure turn up some interesting stuff !
Thanks Charley. We wrote a blog about it a few years ago.

Awsome adventure thanks for taking us along, kinda looks like a stone found by the oak island guys idk
Well you 2 never cease to amaze me! Interesting and provocative explore. Never heard of this site. Thanks! Bon Voyage!
Fascinating. That looks a little time-consuming. So, if they are correct about the time frame. Most people would not have had time for a hoax. Most time was spent on surviving.
It’s a total mystery Ken.
Another awesome adventure with my Pin and beers 🍻 cheers
🍻
You are making such wonderful films. With such great production, really nice 😊.
Thank you for your kind words James. We still have a lot to learn.
Neat trip and mystery!
Very nice that you didn't say it was genuine. As you explained, there's many different explanations and maybe there's no real answer. Thanks for sharing 😊
You’re welcome Gary. No one knows for sure! A mystery!!
@@PinInTheAtlas sometimes a mystery remains a mystery
Im wondering if the stone could have rolled or washed down from higher up.
Could there be more up the hill?
Anything is possible!
Its still a mystery ! Maybe not so much the rock but the writing and symbols are !
It is also called the decalogue stone. The ten commandments is what is on there. It is written in Hebrew but not perfect. There are earlier photos of it before two of the commandments were removed.
Very interesting! I'm thinking hoax but who knows. Can always blame it on aliens. Haha
Yep. Those little green men!!
Things that make you go "hmmmmmmm".
True!
Really nice adventure.Thanks guys 👍❤️🇺🇸
You’re welcome Gayle
I'll tell you what I think. I think your video was nicely done!
Thank you.
Love this channel :) hope you guys keep adventuring so jealous.

Since I took the posted advice and skipped ahead to 4:00, where is this rock located?
🤣
Quite mysterious indeed, you never fail to deliver great content each and every time. So sad of words of tongue and pen is this that's said what might have been.
Thank you Edward.
@@PinInTheAtlas I think it's genuine
In one of my videos, I found a huge boulder a bit larger than this one that had mortar holes in it. But they were on the side of the boulder. I had figured that the boulder had moved over time to where it lies now. And as far as the mystery stone is concerned, let's realize that at least 50 percent of the human population is flip dippy wacko crazy. So who knows what someone did there.
So true.
50 percent? More like 80!
Frank Hibben is not an archeology name you really want to hang your hat on.
I think you could have USED a flashlight so we could have seen it BETTER. Plus you could have shown the mystery stone in its entirety instead of just pieces.
Thanks for the suggestions
That's right Andrea. A true mystery on rock. I love it when your explainations make sense.
😀 thank you Diane
Whatever its origin, it is certainly a mystery. And will more than likely remain so.
I DONT THINK IVE SEEN A SKY THAT BLUE IN 2-3 YEARS HERE IN MAINE...GREAT JOB,FASCINATING AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT SAYS,AGAIN,LOL...SAFE TRAVELS..
It’s a mystery Ralph.
Well, if it was discovered in 1880, its at least 140 years old.
Maybe it translates to "Hecho En Chine"?
🤣like most things these days Charles.
Ohh, there it is. No real mystery.. I took some peyote back in the 90's out there, took me 3 days to carve that gibberish in the rock, and 3 weeks to come down 😂
And here we thought it was done by a Judas Priest who was living after midnight once he was caught breaking the law… breaking the law. Glad it is all cleared up now though!
@@PinInTheAtlas 🤣🤣🤣
It's a Neolithic " live...laugh...love wall boulder.
" dance like nobody's watching"
Whew, the video starts 4:06 in
Thanks for sharing a time stamp
Nice one!
I think the mystery is the mystery. If you knew what or where it came from, it wouldn't be a mystery. Like many mysterious mysteries passed down from generation to generation, it will always remain a mystery, because that is what it's been called.😂 Did you get all that? If not, don't worry, it's a mystery where it came from.😂😊. Great stuff.
You’re still a mystery to us Richard 🤣 glad you enjoyed it ❤️
@PinInTheAtlas hope to always be a mystery. Not only to you, but to all around me. A mystery is only a mystery, when it can't be explained. I fall into that group. Definitely can't explain me.:-)
@richardbeee 🤣
Hey she’s a fan of Justin.
Certainly an Jeff
Been there a few times. First, with some friends, from UNM. The geeky art student types went druid and had to sleep out there because they got too bent.
Lol I bet they had some interesting dreams 😂
Read that you have to pay $35 to visit the site; is that correct?
No. It’s totally free to go there.
@@PinInTheAtlas So much for correct info on the www
This is a weird one, interesting tho. At least you had a beautiful day and got to see a train too.
A total mystery Lorna.

I really enjoyed that. Thanks!
Thank you Coleen. Much appreciated.
looking closely, it says { EAT AT JOE'S }.
🤣
I would lean more to the Spanish. Could be signs to treasure.
Oooo. That’s a possibility Lonnie.
TRUE STORY!!
🤣
Well, this mystery is very deep. It could possibly be someone just scratched into the rock and said Hey this is a nice place to be. Or it could be someone want to let you know the dangerous place it could have been. LOL. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. Q and A. How many states have you been in and can you name them. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍🌎🛣🛤(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Total mystery Rose.
42 I think. I’d have to look!
So where is this???state,country ???
Here’s a blog we did.
pinintheatlas.com/travel-blogs/mystery-stone-nm-route-66/
Why would someone "hoax" the writing , at least to before the youngster noticed it in the 1800's ? What the motive would be would depend on what it actualy says. And why would you spend half a clip showing yourself walking , rather than showing more of the stone , which was lacking? You just about lost me a quarter in during the first half. Would have liked to seen more of the stone to study it a bit.
Thank you for your comment
@@PinInTheAtlas Its all good , but that did seem to take awhile lol.
@@PinInTheAtlas Im curious I dont remember , but he mentioned it , had Scott Wolter ever looked that over?
@@rev.randall2292 yes we believe he did. We did try and find the video but didn’t have any luck!
Well, that's a tough Nut to crack ay !!, I reckon someone drank a bottle of J.D. and decided to write something in gibberish for all to try and decipher, Cheers.
Anything is possible!
No back pack no water..Nothing for an emergency..Remind me not to go hiking with you two..I did see two people in the backgound in the beginning ..Your crew.?
We had water with us Larry just didn’t show it on camera. We didn’t know them but they didn’t know where to go so followed us.
What country is this in?
NM USA
Nope
If it's a meteorite, question is did the engravings occur before or after it hit earth 😁
Interesting!
I hate mystery's, I got to know! Who done it, it is always the butler, right. Sorry this one like many will have to go down as a hoax. No way to verify any part, from when to who and what it means. The age -old question graffiti, art or extraterrestrial? Creationist, evolutionist, one you have to believe in miracles one on fax, (known evidence) good luck figuring out which one thank you ALL stay safe!
If it’s a mystery,, no comment
Total mystery T.
I think it’s authentic
@@tinadelwiche416 well there’s certainly more to it. Would have thought if it was fake they would have been able to prove it! But they haven’t. So we’re with you on this one
