  • High in the mountains lie the remains of Pine Grove ghost town dating back to 1866. Once a thriving community, now just a few remnants of the past and dozens of hidden graves.

    Pinegrove is only 20 miles from my house. I have many videos on it. I've even camped at the cemetery before. The school house was moved there from another location down the road a bit. It wasn't a church. The walls from the chair rail up were all blackboard at one time. The stamp mill was a 3 stamp mill used by Pinegrove and also by Rockland mining camp across the valley. The big building was a Hotel. Mud slides have filled up the bottom floor. There is no basement. According to the history I have dug up (pardon the pun) There were two times that disease went through the camps and took out many people young and old. Cholera was the culprit in at least one of the occasions. I made a post and I see you reacted to it and now my post is gone so I made this one. When were you here? There is snow up there now.

    That big building had many uses. It also was the "Wilson House", where an adopted Native American boy named Jack Wilson (Wovoka) lived for awhile. He started the Ghost Dance. I mapped and recorded the cemetery and town back around 1989.

    • @expressarch

      @@PinInTheAtlas No, it hasn't changed. The biggest change was in the Wilson house. There used to be old newspapers glued to the walls as insulation. Some of those papers were very old. Archaeological Research Services out of Virginia City did the late 1980s report on the place. Shelly Raven is the listed author, although many people contributed to the report.

    Great photography and explore! There are some older photos floating around the net and I think the one door at the school house use to be a window. The garage looks like a bit newer construction with recycled materials. Prospectors most likely continued to work around the area once the main mining operation shutdown. I think the large structure filled with debris was a hotel from the way it is laid out. Looks like the town was on the dry side of the mountains and I'm not sure how much now they would get? Old farm houses in my area sometimes would have a door on the second floor that they would open during the summer for ventilation. Sometimes ... the door would open to a small balcony, but more often than not just to the roof of the front porch. I'd bet the old hotel had a balcony at one time!

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  7 месяцев назад +4

      Never thought of a hotel. That makes sense. I know that sometimes the door on the top floor was used to pull up luggage and in high snow areas as an exit.

    Hi Steve and Andrea - interesting ghost town, it must be many miles from anywhere, since there is so little graffiti. Fascinating facts about nails - perhaps they will use triangular ones in the 21st century.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  7 месяцев назад +5

      It certainly was in the middle of nowhere Brian and refreshing not to see tagging. In the old days the nails were made by hand in the blacksmith so used to be square. Around the turn of the 20th century machine nails were made hence round so we can normally date the structures. At least that’s what we’ve been led to believe by historians.
